<i>O</i>-acetylation of sialic acid residues is one of the main modifications of gangliosides, and modulates ganglioside functions. <i>O</i>-acetylation of gangliosides is dependent on sialyl-<i>O</i>-acetyltransferases and sialyl-<i>O</i>-acetyl-esterase activities.
