Stock markets' reaction to COVID-19: Cases or fatalities?

ABSTRACT: In this paper, we examine the stock markets' response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Using daily COVID-19 confirmed cases and deaths and stock market returns data from 64 countries over the period January 22, 2020 to April 17, 2020, we find that stock markets responded negatively to the growth in COVID-19 confirmed cases. That is, stock market returns declined as the number of confirmed cases increased. We further find that stock markets reacted more proactively to the growth in number of confirmed cases as compared to the growth in number of deaths. Our analysis also suggests negative market reaction was strong during early days of confirmed cases and then between 40 and 60 days after the initial confirmed cases. Overall, our results suggest that stock markets quickly respond to COVID-19 pandemic and this response varies over time depending on the stage of outbreak.

Project description:Recent literature reports stock markets around the world reacted to the Covid-19 pandemic with negative returns. However, this reaction was not uniform across countries. In this paper, we postulate that the national-level uncertainty avoidance, which determines how sensitive members of a nation are to uncertainty, moderates the stock markets' reaction to the pandemic. Using daily data of Covid-19 confirmed cases and stock market returns from 43 countries, we find robust evidence that the decline in stock market returns in response to one percent increase in growth in confirmed cases is stronger for the countries with higher national-level uncertainty aversion.

Stock markets and the COVID-19 fractal contagion effects.

Project description:This article investigates the fractal contagion effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the stock markets. The stock market information of the top 32 coronavirus affected economies (as of 31st March 2020) was sampled for ex-ante and ex-post COVID-19 outbreak analysis using the Detrended Moving Cross-Correlation Analysis (DMCA) and Detrended Cross-Correlation Analysis (DCCA) techniques. The results confirm a fractal contagion effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the stock markets. Furthermore, this fractal contagion effect fizzles out over time (in the middle and long run) for both the stock markets return and volatility. Therefore, this article provides pieces of evidence for the COVID-19 fractal contagion effect on the stock markets.

Socio-economic status and COVID-19-related cases and fatalities.

Project description:ObjectivesThe United States has the highest number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the world, with high variability in cases and mortality between communities. We aimed to quantify the associations between socio-economic status and COVID-19-related cases and mortality in the U.S.Study designThe study design includes nationwide COVID-19 data at the county level that were paired with the Distressed Communities Index (DCI) and its component metrics of socio-economic status.MethodsSeverely distressed communities were classified by DCI>75 for univariate analyses. Adjusted rate ratios were calculated for cases and fatalities per 100,000 persons using hierarchical linear mixed models.ResultsThis cohort included 1,089,999 cases and 62,298 deaths in 3127 counties for a case fatality rate of 5.7%. Severely distressed counties had significantly fewer deaths from COVID-19 but higher number of deaths per 100,000 persons. In risk-adjusted analysis, the two socio-economic determinants of health with the strongest association with both higher cases per 100,000 persons and higher fatalities per 100,000 persons were the percentage of adults without a high school degree (cases: RR 1.10; fatalities: RR 1.08) and proportion of black residents (cases and fatalities: Relative risk(RR) 1.03). The percentage of the population aged older than 65 years was also highly predictive for fatalities per 100,000 persons (RR 1.07).ConclusionLower education levels and greater percentages of black residents are strongly associated with higher rates of both COVID-19 cases and fatalities. Socio-economic factors should be considered when implementing public health interventions to ameliorate the disparities in the impact of COVID-19 on distressed communities.

How stock markets reacted to COVID-19? Evidence from 25 countries.

Project description:The objective of this paper is to analyse how COVID-19 related government policies influenced stock markets. Of the 25 countries we consider, stock returns did not react to any of the three policies - the stimulus package, lockdown, and travel ban in 20% of countries. For around 48% of countries, the effect on returns was negative, due largely to the stimulus package and lockdown policies. Of the 13 countries that experienced a change in the cash rate, returns were negative for 46% of the markets. The travel ban had the least effect on stock returns.

Conventional monetary policy, COVID-19, and stock markets in emerging economies☆

Project description:We examine whether conventional monetary policy moderated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stock markets. Using daily historical data on emerging economies, we show that the pandemic has an adverse impact on stock markets by reducing stock returns. We then show that, in the presence of conventional monetary policy, the adverse impact does not disappear. We probe into the robustness of these findings by considering, among others, alternative COVID-19 indicators, fixed effects, cointegrating dynamics, stock market characteristics, and monetary policy frameworks, and find them to be robust. An implication is that conventional monetary policy alone may not be an effective tool during the pandemic and that policymakers should coordinate conventional monetary policy with other policies to restore stock markets to their pre-crisis level.

Research on the dynamic spillover of stock markets under COVID-19-Taking the stock markets of China, Japan, and South Korea as an example.

Project description:Examining stock market interactions between China (mainland China and Hong Kong), Japan, and South Korea, this study employs a framework that includes 239 economic variables to identify the spillover effects among these three countries, and empirically simulates the dynamic time-varying non-linear relationship between the stock markets of different countries. The findings are that in recent decades, China's stock market relied on Hong Kong's as a window to the exchange of price information with Japan and South Korea. More recently, the China stock market's spillover effect on East Asia has expanded. The spread of the crisis has strengthened co-movement between the stock markets of China, Japan, and South Korea.

Factors Influencing Global Variations in COVID-19 Cases and Fatalities; A Review.

Project description:Since the first cases of the novel corona virus disease (COVID-19) were diagnosed in China, outcomes associated with this infection in terms of total numbers of cases and deaths have varied widely between countries. While some countries had minimal rates of infections and deaths, other countries were hit hard by the pandemic. Countries with highest numbers of cases continued to change over time, but at the time of submission of this article they are: USA, Brazil, Russia, UK, India, Spain, Italy, Peru and Chile. This is in contrary to many countries in the Middle East, Far East, and Africa, which had lower cases or deaths/cases rates. This raised many questions pertaining to this variation. This overview explores the potential factors that contribute to spread, transmission and outcomes of the COVID-19 infection. It also uses an evidence-based approach in reviewing the available most recent literature that tackled the various factors that modify the populations' response to COVID-19, namely, factors pertaining to population characteristics, environmental and geographic factors.

Covid-19 pandemic and spillover effects in stock markets: A financial network approach

Project description:This paper examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on 51 major stock markets, both emerging and developed. We isolated the countries susceptible to shock transmissions, and evaluated countries with immunity, during the lockdown. Specifically, using dependence dynamics and network analysis on a bivariate basis, we identify volatility and contagion risk among stock markets during the COVID-19 pandemic. The empirical findings add to the existing body of literature, given that previous work has not placed emphasis on network topologic metrics when it comes to financial networks, specifically during the COVID-19. The evidence shows instant financial contagion a result of the lockdown and the spread of the novel coronavirus. The methodological framework outlines important information for investors and policymakers on using financial networks to improve portfolio selection, by placing an emphasis on assets according to centrality.

Unconditional and conditional analysis between covid-19 cases, temperature, exchange rate and stock markets using wavelet coherence and wavelet partial coherence approaches.

Project description:This paper examines the time-frequency relationship between the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, temperature, exchange rates and stock market return in the top-15 most affected countries by the COVID-19 pandemic. We employ Wavelet Coherence and Partial Wavelet Coherence on the daily data from 1st February, 2020 to 13th May, 2020. This study adds to the literature by implementing the Wavelet Coherence technique to explore the unexpected outbreak effects of the global pandemic on temperature, exchange rates and stock market returns. Our results reveal (i) there is evidence of cyclicality between temperature and COVID-19 cases, implying that average daily temperature has a significant impact on the spread of the COVID-19 disease in most of the countries; (ii) strong connectedness at low frequencies display that COVID-19 cases have a significant long-term impact on the exchange rate returns and stock markets returns of the most affected countries under study; (iii) after controlling for the effect of stock market returns and temperature, the co-movements between the confirmed COVID-19 cases and exchange rate returns becomes stronger; (iv) after controlling for the effect of exchange rate returns and temperature, the co-movements between the confirmed COVID-19 cases and stock market returns become stronger. Apart from theoretical contribution, this paper offers value to investors and policymakers as they attempt to combat the coronavirus risk and shape the economy and stock market behavior.

Stock market response to COVID-19 pandemic: A comparative evidence from two emerging markets.

Project description:This paper presents the first comparative study of emerging stock markets' response to the COVID-19 pandemic with evidence from Ghana and Botswana. Using daily time-series data from March 1, 2020, to September 30, 2021, the study estimates parametric, semi-parametric and non-parametric models, and provides evidence to support the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e., the total number of reported COVID-19 cases and deaths) on the stock market performances of Ghana and Botswana. Interestingly, the study shows that the impact of the pandemic on Ghana's stock market is quantitatively greater than the stock market of Botswana. The study calls for fiscal and monetary policies to help firms on the stock market to survive the shock. Going forward, measures aimed at building a robust stock market to withstand such external shocks are critical.
