Survey based dataset on automation decisions for assembly systems in Germany.

ABSTRACT: The data provided in the present article provides information on the importance of a list of monetary and non-monetary influencing factors on decisions regarding the automation of an assembly system. A survey among German industry representatives conducted between July 2018 and October 2018 is the basis for this dataset. It contains the characteristics of industrial companies based in Germany that participated in the survey as well as their attitude towards the development of the automation level in assembly systems. The focus of the survey lies on the influencing factors of the production and production environment and their influence on the automation level. The participants were able to evaluate the factors on a six-step ordinal scale from "no influence" to "very strong influence". Interpretation of this data can be found in the research article titled "Automation decisions in flow-line assembly systems based on a cost-benefit analysis" [1].

A Magnetic-Field-Assisted Milli-Scale Robotic Assembly Machine: An Approach to Parallel Robotic Automation Systems.

Project description:Utilizing large numbers of microrobots to heterogeneously integrate small devices to build advanced structures has long been a goal in the field of manufacturing automation. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel milli-scale robotic assembly machine with highly parallel capabilities and assisted with a programmable magnetic field. The prototype machine consists of a 16 × 16 array of electromagnets. Using this machine, we have successfully demonstrated the manipulation of up to nine milli-scale robots simultaneously. Moreover, two microrobots have been operated to demonstrate the proof of concept of two simultaneous pick-and-place light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The design and modeling of the microrobots is discussed.

VegNet: An organized dataset of cauliflower disease for a sustainable agro-based automation system.

Project description:Cauliflower, a winter seasoned vegetable that originated in the Mediterranean region and arrived in Europe at the end of the 15th century, takes the lead in production among all vegetables. It's high in fiber and can keep us hydrated, and have medicinal properties like the chemical glucosinolates, which may help prevent cancer. If proper care is not given to the plants, several significant diseases can affect the plants, reducing production, quantity, and quality. Plant disease monitoring by hand is extremely tough because it demands a great deal of effort and time. Early detection of the diseases allows the agriculture sector to grow cauliflower more efficiently. In this scenario, an insightful and scientific dataset can be a lifesaver for researchers looking to analyze and observe different diseases in cauliflower development patterns. So, in this work, we present a well-organized and technically valuable dataset "VegNet' to effectively recognize conditions in cauliflower plants and fruits. Healthy and disease-affected cauliflower head and leaves by black rot,downy mildew, and bacterial spot rot are included in our suggested dataset. The images were taken manually from December 20th to January 15th, when the flowers were fully blown, and most of the diseases were observed clearly. It is a well-organized dataset to develop and validate machine learning-based automated cauliflower disease detection algorithms. The article introduces a dataset on 15 project-based organizations (PBOs) in the management consulting industry in the Netherlands. The dataset includes organization-level conditions at PBOs, such as perceived environmental uncertainty, organizational size, innovation strategy, opportunity strategy, and performance management system design. The dataset is prepared for a fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA). Combinations of conditions are expected to be related to a mechanistic or an organic performance management system design. How automation level influences moral decisions of humans collaborating with industrial robots in different scenarios.

Project description:IntroductionDigitalization in intelligent manufacturing leads to the development of Industry 4.0/5.0 and human-cyber-physical systems. As many production technologies rely on teaming of human workers and intelligent cyber-physical systems such as industrial robots, human-robot collaboration is an intensively investigated topic in this transdisciplinary research area. To design industrial robots in a human-centered way, psychological knowledge concerning judgment and decision-making needs to be gained and integrated.MethodThis paper reports results from an experimental study (N = 222, 2 × 4 within-subjects design) using eight moral dilemmas framed in the context of human-robot-collaboration to examine the influence of spatial distance of an industrial robot and humans (no direct contact, different tasks vs. no direct contact, same task vs. handing-over contact, same task vs. direct contact, same task) on moral decisions. Additionally, the type of dilemma was varied, with every four dilemmas depicting a life-or-death and an injury scenario. Participants responded on a four-point-response scale which actions they would take indicating deontological or utilitarian moral decision-making.ResultsResults show a large effect of the proximity of the cooperation between robots and humans. The closer the collaboration the more a human tends to choose utilitarian moral choices.DiscussionIt is argued that this effect might stem from an adaptation of human rationality to the robot or overreliance and shift of responsibility to the robot team partner.

Dataset on the interview-based survey of Moscow bicycle infrastructure.

Project description:The data were collected using Computer Assisted Telephone Interview with a questionnaire set of closed-ended and open-ended questions. Respondents' phone numbers were randomly generated. The survey sample included 1000 adult citizens of Moscow - active and potential users of bicycles (in equal proportions) who take or can take regular rides to destinations up to 5 km away, as of August 2018. The sample was representative in terms of gender-age and geographical distribution characteristics of the population. The data table is supplemented with the original questionnaire. Survey results were put in the database containing respondents' metadata and their answers, either encoded or provided as a plain text (for open-ended questions). No other processing was applied to the data to maintain suitability for different analyses. The data can be used in further research of cities' public transport infrastructure to evaluate its performance and returns on investment, to formulate initial hypotheses, to draft a survey strategy and design, and to verify results, etc. The provided questionnaire is a ready-to-deploy instrument for custom surveys in the related areas of research.

A multimodal driver monitoring benchmark dataset for driver modeling in assisted driving automation.

Project description:In driver monitoring various data types are collected from drivers and used for interpreting, modeling, and predicting driver behavior, and designing interactions. Aim of this contribution is to introduce manD 1.0, a multimodal dataset that can be used as a benchmark for driver monitoring in the context of automated driving. manD is the short form of human dimension in automated driving. manD 1.0 refers to a dataset that contains data from multiple driver monitoring sensors collected from 50 participants, gender-balanced, aged between 21 to 65 years. They drove through five different driving scenarios in a static driving simulator under controlled laboratory conditions. The automation level (SAE International, Standard J3016) ranged from SAE L0 (no automation, manual) to SAE L3 (conditional automation, temporal). To capture data reflecting various mental and physical states of the subjects, the scenarios encompassed a range of distinct driving events and conditions. manD 1.0 includes environmental data such as traffic and weather conditions, vehicle data like the SAE level and driving parameters, and driver state that covers physiology, body movements, activities, gaze, and facial information, all synchronized. This dataset supports applications like data-driven modeling, prediction of driver reactions, crafting of interaction strategies, and research into motion sickness.

Cryptographic Considerations for Automation and SCADA Systems Using Trusted Platform Modules.

Project description:The increased number of cyber threats against the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and automation systems in the Industrial-Internet-of-Things (IIoT) and Industry 4.0 era has raised concerns in respect to the importance of securing critical infrastructures and manufacturing plants. The evolution towards interconnection and interoperability has expanded the vulnerabilities of these systems, especially in the context of the widely spread legacy standard protocols, by exposing the data to the outside network. After gaining access to the system data by launching a variety of attacks, an intruder can cause severe damage to the industrial process in place. Hence, this paper attempts to respond to the security issue caused by legacy structures using insecure communication protocols (e.g., Modbus TCP, DNP3, S7), presenting a different perspective focused on the capabilities of a trusted platform module (TPM). Furthermore, the intent is to assure the authenticity of the data transmitted between two entities on the same (horizontal interoperation) or different (vertical interoperation) hierarchical levels communicating through Modbus TCP protocol based on functionalities obtained by integrating trusted platform modules. From the experimental results perspective, the paper aims to show the advantages of integrating TPMs in automation/SCADA systems in terms of security. Two methods are proposed in order to assure the authenticity of the messages which are transmitted, respectively the study presents the measurements related to the increased time latency introduced due to the proposed concept.

Deep Bayesian-Assisted Keypoint Detection for Pose Estimation in Assembly Automation.

Project description:Pose estimation is crucial for automating assembly tasks, yet achieving sufficient accuracy for assembly automation remains challenging and part-specific. This paper presents a novel, streamlined approach to pose estimation that facilitates automation of assembly tasks. Our proposed method employs deep learning on a limited number of annotated images to identify a set of keypoints on the parts of interest. To compensate for network shortcomings and enhance accuracy we incorporated a Bayesian updating stage that leverages our detailed knowledge of the assembly part design. This Bayesian updating step refines the network output, significantly improving pose estimation accuracy. For this purpose, we utilized a subset of network-generated keypoint positions with higher quality as measurements, while for the remaining keypoints, the network outputs only serve as priors. The geometry data aid in constructing likelihood functions, which in turn result in enhanced posterior distributions of keypoint pixel positions. We then employed the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimates of keypoint locations to obtain a final pose, allowing for an update to the nominal assembly trajectory. We evaluated our method on a 14-point snap-fit dash trim assembly for a Ford Mustang dashboard, demonstrating promising results. Our approach does not require tailoring to new applications, nor does it rely on extensive machine learning expertise or large amounts of training data. This makes our method a scalable and adaptable solution for the production floors.
