The antibiotic actinonin kills malaria parasites (<i>Plasmodium falciparum</i>) by interfering with apicoplast function. Early evidence suggested that actinonin inhibited prokaryote-like post-translational modification in the apicoplast; mimicking its activity against bacteria. However, Amberg Johnson et al.
