Contingent Pacific-Atlantic Ocean influence on multicentury wildfire synchrony over western North America.

Project description:Widespread synchronous wildfires driven by climatic variation, such as those that swept western North America during 1996, 2000, and 2002, can result in major environmental and societal impacts. Understanding relationships between continental-scale patterns of drought and modes of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) may explain how interannual to multidecadal variability in SSTs drives fire at continental scales. We used local wildfire chronologies reconstructed from fire scars on tree rings across western North America and independent reconstructions of SST developed from tree-ring widths at other sites to examine the relationships of multicentury patterns of climate and fire synchrony. From 33,039 annually resolved fire-scar dates at 238 sites (the largest paleofire record yet assembled), we examined forest fires at regional and subcontinental scales. Since 1550 CE, drought and forest fires covaried across the West, but in a manner contingent on SST modes. During certain phases of ENSO and PDO, fire was synchronous within broad subregions and sometimes asynchronous among those regions. In contrast, fires were most commonly synchronous across the West during warm phases of the AMO. ENSO and PDO were the main drivers of high-frequency variation in fire (interannual to decadal), whereas the AMO conditionally changed the strength and spatial influence of ENSO and PDO on wildfire occurrence at multidecadal scales. A current warming trend in AMO suggests that we may expect an increase in widespread, synchronous fires across the western U.S. in coming decades.

The Bacterial Community in the Western Region of North Pacific Intermediate Water.

Project description:The bacterial composition in North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) was investigated in three different years and compared with that in other seawaters around Japan. The results indicated that bacterial composition was surprisingly stable at the same point in a mesopelagic water mass throughout the years and supported previous physicochemical observations that NPIW is distributed to Kumejima, Japan.

Enhanced Particulate Organic Carbon Export at Eddy Edges in the Oligotrophic Western North Pacific Ocean.

Project description:Mesoscale eddies in the subtropical oligotrophic ocean are ubiquitous and play an important role in nutrient supply and oceanic primary production. However, it is still unclear whether these mesoscale eddies can efficiently transfer CO2 from the atmosphere to deep waters via biological pump because of the sampling difficulty due to their transient nature. In 2007, particulate organic carbon (POC) fluxes, measured below the euphotic zone at the edge of warm eddy were 136-194 mg-C m-2 d-1 which was greatly elevated over that (POC flux = 26-35 mg-C m-2 d-1) determined in the nutrient-depleted oligotrophic waters in the Western North Pacific (WNP). In 2010, higher POC fluxes (83-115 mg-C m-2 d-1) were also observed at the boundary of mesoscale eddies in the WNP. The enhanced POC flux at the edge of eddies was mainly attributed to both large denuded diatom frustules and zooplankton fecal pellets based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination. The result suggests that mesoscale eddies in the oligotrophic waters in the subtropical WNP can efficiently increase the oceanic carbon export flux and the eddy edge is a crucial conduit in carbon sequestration to deep waters.

Biological nitrogen fixation in the oxygen-minimum region of the eastern tropical North Pacific ocean.

Project description:Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) was investigated above and within the oxygen-depleted waters of the oxygen-minimum zone of the Eastern Tropical North Pacific Ocean. BNF rates were estimated using an isotope tracer method that overcame the uncertainty of the conventional bubble method by directly measuring the tracer enrichment during the incubations. Highest rates of BNF (~4?nM?day-1) occurred in coastal surface waters and lowest detectable rates (~0.2?nM?day-1) were found in the anoxic region of offshore stations. BNF was not detectable in most samples from oxygen-depleted waters. The composition of the N2-fixing assemblage was investigated by sequencing of nifH genes. The diazotrophic assemblage in surface waters contained mainly Proteobacterial sequences (Cluster I nifH), while both Proteobacterial sequences and sequences with high identities to those of anaerobic microbes characterized as Clusters III and IV type nifH sequences were found in the anoxic waters. Our results indicate modest input of N through BNF in oxygen-depleted zones mainly due to the activity of proteobacterial diazotrophs.

Response of N2O production rate to ocean acidification in the western North Pacific.

Project description:Ocean acidification induced by the increase of anthropogenic CO2 emissions has a profound impact on marine organisms and biogeochemical processes.1 The response of marine microbial activities to ocean acidification might play a crucial role in the future evolution of air-sea fluxes of biogenic gases such as nitrous oxide (N2O), a strong greenhouse gas and the dominant stratospheric ozone-depleting substance.2 Here, we examine the response of N2O production from nitrification to acidification in a series of incubation experiments conducted in subtropical and subarctic western North Pacific. The experiments show that, when pH was reduced, the N2O production rate during nitrification measured at subarctic stations increased significantly whereas nitrification rates remained stable or decreased. Contrary to what was previously thought, these results suggest that the effect of ocean acidification on N2O production during nitrification and nitrification rates are likely uncoupled. Collectively these results suggest that, if seawater pH continues to decline at the same rate, ocean acidification could increase the marine N2O production during nitrification in subarctic North Pacific by 185 to 491% by the end of the century.

Pseudidiomarina fusca sp. nov., Isolated from the Surface Seawater of the Western Pacific Ocean.

Project description:The Gram-negative marine bacterium GXY010T, which has been isolated from the surface seawater of the western Pacific Ocean, is aerobic, non-motile and non-flagellated. Strain GXY010T exhibits growth across a temperature range of 10-42 °C (optimal at 37 °C), pH tolerance from 7.0 to 11.0 (optimal at 7.5) and a NaCl concentration ranging from 1.0 to 15.0% (w/v, optimal at 5.0%). Ubiquinone-8 (Q-8) was the predominant isoprenoid quinone in strain GXY010T. The dominant fatty acids (>10%) of strain GXY010T were iso-C15:0 (14.65%), summed feature 9 (iso-C17:1ω9c and/or 10-methyl C16:0) (12.41%), iso-C17:0 (10.85%) and summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c and/or C16:1ω6c) (10.41%). Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), unidentifiable glycolipid (GL) and four non-identifiable aminolipids (AL1-AL4) were the predominant polar lipids of strain GXY010T. The genomic DNA G+C content was identified as a result of 48.0% for strain GXY010T. The strain GXY010T genome consisted of 2,766,857 bp, with 2664 Open Reading Frames (ORFs), including 2586 Coding sequences (CDSs) and 78 RNAs. Strain GXY010T showed Average Nucleotide Identity (ANI) values of 73.4% and 70.6% and DNA-DNA hybridization (DDH) values of 19.2% and 14.5% with reference species Pseudidiomarina tainanensis MCCC 1A02633T (=PIN1T) and Pseudidiomarina taiwanensis MCCC 1A00163T (=PIT1T). From the results of the polyphasic analysis, a newly named species, Pseudidiomarina fusca sp. nov. within the genus Pseudidiomarina, was proposed. The type strain of Pseudidiomarina fusca is GXY010T (=JCM 35760T = MCCC M28199T = KCTC 92693T).

Time evolution of Fukushima-derived radiocesium in the western subtropical gyre of the North Pacific Ocean by 2017.

Project description:In 2015-2017, we measured activity concentration of radiocesium in the western subtropical gyre of the North Pacific Ocean and revealed the time evolution of radiocesium derived from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP1) accident between 2011 and 2017. The FNPP1-derived radiocesium deposited on the area south of the Kuroshio/Kuroshio Extension Currents in March 2011 was transported southward and westward through subsurface layers due to subduction of the subtropical mode water. In 2014, the radiocesium in the subsurface layers returned to the north and circulated within the Kuroshio recirculation area. Then in 2015-2017, the radiocesium re-circulated with the area.

Hydrographic processes driven by seasonal monsoon system affect siphonophore assemblages in tropical-subtropical waters (western North Pacific Ocean).

Project description:This work is a part of the Taiwan Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigation, the first large scale hydrographic and plankton survey around Taiwan (21-26°N, 119-123°E). The present study examined the influence of hydrodynamic and biological variables driven by monsoon system on the siphonophore assemblages through an annual cycle in 2004. Calycophorans, namely Chelophyes appendiculata, Diphyes chamissonis, Lensia subtiloides, Bassia bassensis, and Muggiaea atlantica, were the most dominant siphonophore species. Maximum abundance of these dominant species generally occurred during the warm period (May and August), while M. atlantica had a significantly peak abundance in February. Although no apparently temporal difference in siphonophore abundance was observed in the study, siphonophore assemblage was more diverse in August than in other sampling times. Result of a cluster analysis indicated that assemblage structure of siphonophores in the waters around Taiwan varied at temporal and spatial scales during the sampling period. The intrusions of the Kuroshio Branch Current and China Coastal Current to the study area play an important role on the transportation of siphonophores. Also, the distribution of siphonophore assemblage was closely related to the hydrographic characteristics, with temperature, chlorophyll a concentration, and zooplankton abundance being the major environmental factors affecting the spatio-temporal variability of siphonophores. This study contributes substantially to the new knowledge of the siphonophore assemblage in the tropical-temperate waters of Taiwan.

Covariability of western tropical Pacific-North Pacific atmospheric circulation during summer.

Project description:North Pacific subtropical high (NPSH) is permanent high-pressure system over the Northern Pacific Ocean and it extends to the western North Pacific during the boreal summer (June-July-August), which is so called the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH). Here, we examine the covariability of the NPSH-WNPSH during summer using both observation and Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) model data. The statistical analyses indicate that the NPSH-WNPSH covariability shows significant decadal variability in the observations, in addition, the in-phase relationship of NPSH-WNPSH is enhanced after the mid-to-late 1990s. A dipole-like sea surface temperature (SST) pattern, i.e., a warming in the western Pacific and a cooling in the eastern Pacific, is dominant after the mid-to-late 1990s, which acts to enhance the covariability of NPSH-WNPSH by modulating the atmospheric teleconnections. However, the covariability of NPSH-WNPSH in the future climate is not much influenced by the anthropogenic forcing but it is largely characterized by the natural decadal-to-interdecadal variability, implying that the enhancement of NPSH-WNPSH covariability after the mid-to-late 1990s could be considered as part of decadal-to-interdecadal variability.
