Construction of 1D Vortex Chain Using a Chiral Nanostructure.

ABSTRACT: The construction and control of high-order coupled vortices are a significant challenge for promoting the application of magnetic vortices. Thus far, only double-coupled vortices have been produced and modulated in some ferromagnetic nanostructures. Here, an effective approach is provided to obtain a high-order coupled vortex structure by using a chiral nanostructure. Double-vortex, triple-vortex, and n-vortex chains can be successfully constructed using structured Fe4N nanostrips and bias nanomagnets. The designed chiral nanostructure cannot only control the transport and hybridization of vortices but also modulate the domain walls of the vortex chain for spin wave (SW) propagation. At the exciting frequency of 1.2 GHz, the SW propagates along the domain walls formed in the vortex chain. Upon increasing the frequency to 5.0 GHz, the SW gradually spreads from the domain walls into domains. This technique will present a new perspective for the design and application of magnetic vortex-based devices.

3D Optical Vortex Trapping of Plasmonic Nanostructure.

Project description:3D optical vortex trapping upon a polystyrene nanoparticle (NP) by a 1D gold dimer array is studied theoretically. The optical force field shows that the trapping mode can be contact or non-contact. For the former, the NP is attracted toward a corresponding dimer. For the latter, it is trapped toward a stagnation point of zero force with a 3D spiral trajectory, revealing optical vortex. Additionally the optical torque causes the NP to transversely spin, even though the system is irradiated by a linearly polarized light. The transverse spin-orbit interaction is manifested from the opposite helicities of the spin and spiral orbit. Along with the growth and decline of optical vortices the trapped NP performs a step-like motion, as the array continuously moves. Our results, in agreement with the previous experiment, identify the role of optical vortex in the near-field trapping of plasmonic nanostructure.

A chiral switchable photovoltaic ferroelectric 1D perovskite.

Project description:Spin and valley degrees of freedom in materials without inversion symmetry promise previously unknown device functionalities, such as spin-valleytronics. Control of material symmetry with electric fields (ferroelectricity), while breaking additional symmetries, including mirror symmetry, could yield phenomena where chirality, spin, valley, and crystal potential are strongly coupled. Here we report the synthesis of a halide perovskite semiconductor that is simultaneously photoferroelectricity switchable and chiral. Spectroscopic and structural analysis, and first-principles calculations, determine the material to be a previously unknown low-dimensional hybrid perovskite (R)-(-)-1-cyclohexylethylammonium/(S)-(+)-1 cyclohexylethylammonium) PbI3. Optical and electrical measurements characterize its semiconducting, ferroelectric, switchable pyroelectricity and switchable photoferroelectric properties. Temperature dependent structural, dielectric and transport measurements reveal a ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition. Circular dichroism spectroscopy confirms its chirality. The development of a material with such a combination of these properties will facilitate the exploration of phenomena such as electric field and chiral enantiomer-dependent Rashba-Dresselhaus splitting and circular photogalvanic effects.

Organocatalytic atroposelective construction of axially chiral arylquinones.

Project description:Atropisomeric biaryl motifs are ubiquitous in chiral catalysts and ligands. Numerous efficient strategies have been developed for the synthesis of axially chiral biaryls. In contrast, the asymmetric construction of o-quinone-aryl atropisomers has yet to be realized. Inspired by the rapid progress of the chemistry of biaryls, here we present our initial investigations about the atroposelective construction of axially chiral arylquinones by a bifunctional chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed asymmetric conjugate addition and central-to-axial chirality conversion. With o-naphthoquinone as both the electrophile and the oxidant, three types of arylation counterparts, namely 2-naphthylamines, 2-naphthols and indoles, are utilized to assemble a series of atropisomeric scaffolds in good yields and excellent enantioselectivities. This approach not only expands the axially chiral library but also offers a route to a class of potential, chiral biomimetic catalysts.

A planar chiral meta-surface for optical vortex generation and focusing.

Project description:Data capacity is rapidly reaching its limit in modern optical communications. Optical vortex has been explored to enhance the data capacity for its extra degree of freedom of angular momentum. In traditional means, optical vortices are generated using space light modulators or spiral phase plates, which would sharply decrease the integration of optical communication systems. Here we experimentally demonstrate a planar chiral antenna array to produce optical vortex from a circularly polarized light. Furthermore, the antenna array has the ability to focus the incident light into point, which greatly increases the power intensity of the generated optical vortex. This chiral antenna array may have potential application in highly integrated optical communication systems.

Construction of 1D Heterostructure NiCo@C/ZnO Nanorod with Enhanced Microwave Absorption.

Project description:Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have a special structure and atom composition, which are expected to be an excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorber. However, it is still a problem that obtaining excellent EMW-absorbing materials from LDHs. Herein, we designed heterostructure NiCo-LDHs@ZnO nanorod and then subsequent heat treating to derive NiCo@C/ZnO composites. Finally, with the synergy of excellent dielectric loss and magnetic loss, an outstanding absorption performance could be achieved with the reflection loss of - 60.97 dB at the matching thickness of 2.3 mm, and the widest absorption bandwidth of 6.08 GHz was realized at 2.0 mm. Moreover, this research work provides a reference for the development and utilization of LDHs materials in the field of microwave absorption materials and can also provide ideas for the design of layered structural absorbers.

Accelerating Enzymatic Catalysis Using Vortex Fluidics.

Project description:Enzymes catalyze chemical transformations with outstanding stereo- and regio-specificities, but many enzymes are limited by their long reaction times. A general method to accelerate enzymes using pressure waves contained within thin films is described. Each enzyme responds best to specific frequencies of pressure waves, and an acceleration landscape for each protein is reported. A vortex fluidic device introduces pressure waves that drive increased rate constants (kcat ) and enzymatic efficiency (kcat /Km ). Four enzymes displayed an average seven-fold acceleration, with deoxyribose-5-phosphate aldolase (DERA) achieving an average 15-fold enhancement using this approach. In solving a common problem in enzyme catalysis, a powerful, generalizable tool for enzyme acceleration has been uncovered. This research provides new insights into previously uncontrolled factors affecting enzyme function.

Phosphoric acid-catalyzed atroposelective construction of axially chiral arylpyrroles.

Project description:Axially chiral arylpyrroles are key components of pharmaceuticals and natural products as well as chiral catalysts and ligands for asymmetric transformations. However, the catalytic enantioselective construction of optically active arylpyrroles remains a formidable challenge. Here we disclose a highly efficient strategy to access enantioenriched axially chiral arylpyrroles by means of organocatalytic atroposelective desymmetrization and kinetic resolution. Depending on the remote control of chiral catalyst, the arylpyrroles were obtained in high yields and excellent enantioselectivities under mild reaction conditions. This strategy tolerates a wide range of functional groups, providing a facile avenue to approach axially chiral arylpyrroles from simple and readily available starting materials. Selected arylpyrrole products proved to be efficient chiral ligands in asymmetric catalysis and also important precursors for further synthetic transformations into highly functionalized pyrroles with potential bioactivity, especially the axially chiral fully substituted arylpyrroles.

Bronsted acid-catalysed enantioselective construction of axially chiral arylquinazolinones.

Project description:The axially chiral arylquinazolinone acts as a privileged structural scaffold, which is present in a large number of natural products and biologically active compounds as well as in chiral ligands. However, a direct catalytic enantioselective approach to access optically pure arylquinazolinones has been underexplored. Here we show a general and efficient approach to access enantiomerically pure arylquinazolinones in one-pot fashion catalysed by chiral phosphoric acids. A variety of axially chiral arylquinazolinones were obtained in high yields with good to excellent enantioselectivities under mild condition. Furthermore, we disclosed a method for atroposelective synthesis of alkyl-substituted arylquinazolinones involving Brønsted acid-catalysed carbon-carbon bond cleavage strategy. Finally, the asymmetric total synthesis of eupolyphagin bearing a cyclic arylquinazolinone skeleton was accomplished with an overall yield of 32% in six steps by utilizing the aforementioned methodology.

Construction of 1D Ag-AgBr/AlOOH Plasmonic Photocatalyst for Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride.

Project description:In this work, the highly efficient and low-cost Ag-AgBr/AlOOH plasmonic photocatalyst is successfully prepared via a simple and mild wet-chemical process and used for degrading high concentration methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The optimized 6-Ag-AgBr/AlOOH sample showed a 79% decomposition of TCH in 2 h, which is almost two times higher than that of bare AgBr (37%). For degrading MB, the photocatalytic activity of 6-Ag-AgBr/AlOOH (decomposing 84% in 2 h) showed a large enhancement as compared to bare AgBr (only 57%). The TEM, HRTEM, XRD, DRS, and XPS characterization results confirm that Ag-AgBr is a composite catalyst formed by loading Ag nanoparticles onto AgBr surfaces and then loaded on to AlOOH. The possible mechanism proposed is that • O2- and •OH radicals produced under sun light are the main active species for degrading MB and TCH. It is hoped that this work will open a new gateway to the synthesis of highly efficient and low-cost Ag-AgBr/AlOOH plasmonic photocatalysts for degrading organic pollutants.

Facile Construction of Advanced 1D Metal-Organic Coordination Polymer for Efficient Lithium Storage.

Project description:Recently, coordination polymers (CPs) have been frequently reported in the field of energy storage as electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their highly adjustable architectures, which have a variety of active sites and obviously defined lithium transport routes. A well-designed redox-active organic linker with potential active sites for storing lithium ions, pyrazine-2,3-dicarboxylate (H2PDA), was applied for generating CPs by a simple hydrothermal method. When employed as anode materials in LIBs, those two one-dimensional (1D) CPs with an isomorphic composition, [M(PDA)(H2O)2]n (M = Co for Co-PDA and Ni for Ni-PDA), produced outstanding reversible capacities and stable cycling performance. The Co-PDA displays a substantial reversible capacity of 936 mAh g-1 at 200 mA g-1 after 200 cycles, as well as an excellent cycling life at high currents. According to the ex situ characterizations, the high reversible specific capacity of the post-cycled electrodes was found to be a result of both the transition metal ions and the organic ligands, and Co-PDA and Ni-PDA electrode materials show reversible insertion/extraction processes that are accompanied by crystallization to an amorphous state.
