In bacteria, the dissociable σ subunit of the RNA polymerase (RNAP) is responsible for initiating RNA synthesis from specific DNA sites. As nascent RNA grows, downstream DNA unwinds and is pulled into the RNAP, causing stress accumulation and initiation complex destabilization.
