Congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts (CEPS), previously also described as Abernethy malformations, are rare malformations in which the extrahepatic portal system directly communicates with the vena cava inferior, thereby bypassing the liver. A hypoplastic portal vein (PV) exists in most cases.
