All-optical charging and charge transport in quantum dots.

ABSTRACT: Optically active quantum dots are one of the promising candidates for fundamental building blocks in quantum technology. Many practical applications would comprise of multiple coupled quantum dots, each of which must be individually chargeable. However, the most advanced demonstrations are limited to devices with only a single dot, and individual charging has neither been demonstrated nor proposed for an array of optically active quantum dots. Here we propose and numerically demonstrate a method for controlled charging of multiple quantum dots and charge transport between the dots. We show that our method can be implemented in realistic structures with fidelities greater than 99.9%. The scheme is based on all-optical resonant manipulation of charges in an array of quantum dots formed by a type-II band alignment, such as crystal-phase quantum dots in nanowires. Our work opens new practical avenues for realizations of advanced quantum photonic devices, for instance, solid-state quantum registers with a photonic interface.

Charge transport in semiconductors assembled from nanocrystal quantum dots.

Project description:The potential of semiconductors assembled from nanocrystals has been demonstrated for a broad array of electronic and optoelectronic devices, including transistors, light emitting diodes, solar cells, photodetectors, thermoelectrics, and phase change memory cells. Despite the commercial success of nanocrystal quantum dots as optical absorbers and emitters, applications involving charge transport through nanocrystal semiconductors have eluded exploitation due to the inability to predictively control their electronic properties. Here, we perform large-scale, ab initio simulations to understand carrier transport, generation, and trapping in strongly confined nanocrystal quantum dot-based semiconductors from first principles. We use these findings to build a predictive model for charge transport in these materials, which we validate experimentally. Our insights provide a path for systematic engineering of these semiconductors, which in fact offer previously unexplored opportunities for tunability not achievable in other semiconductor systems.

Reducing charge noise in quantum dots by using thin silicon quantum wells.

Project description:Charge noise in the host semiconductor degrades the performance of spin-qubits and poses an obstacle to control large quantum processors. However, it is challenging to engineer the heterogeneous material stack of gate-defined quantum dots to improve charge noise systematically. Here, we address the semiconductor-dielectric interface and the buried quantum well of a 28Si/SiGe heterostructure and show the connection between charge noise, measured locally in quantum dots, and global disorder in the host semiconductor, measured with macroscopic Hall bars. In 5 nm thick 28Si quantum wells, we find that improvements in the scattering properties and uniformity of the two-dimensional electron gas over a 100 mm wafer correspond to a significant reduction in charge noise, with a minimum value of 0.29 ± 0.02 μeV/Hz½ at 1 Hz averaged over several quantum dots. We extrapolate the measured charge noise to simulated dephasing times to CZ-gate fidelities that improve nearly one order of magnitude. These results point to a clean and quiet crystalline environment for integrating long-lived and high-fidelity spin qubits into a larger system.

Small Charging Energies and <i>g</i>-Factor Anisotropy in PbTe Quantum Dots.

Project description:PbTe is a semiconductor with promising properties for topological quantum computing applications. Here, we characterize electron quantum dots in PbTe nanowires selectively grown on InP. Charge stability diagrams at zero magnetic field reveal large even-odd spacing between Coulomb blockade peaks, charging energies below 140 μeV and Kondo peaks in odd Coulomb diamonds. We attribute the large even-odd spacing to the large dielectric constant and small effective electron mass of PbTe. By studying the Zeeman-induced level and Kondo splitting in finite magnetic fields, we extract the electron g-factor as a function of magnetic field direction. We find the g-factor tensor to be highly anisotropic with principal g-factors ranging from 0.9 to 22.4 and to depend on the electronic configuration of the devices. These results indicate strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction in our PbTe quantum dots.

Single-electron charge sensing in self-assembled quantum dots.

Project description:Measuring single-electron charge is one of the most fundamental quantum technologies. Charge sensing, which is an ingredient for the measurement of single spins or single photons, has been already developed for semiconductor gate-defined quantum dots, leading to intensive studies on the physics and the applications of single-electron charge, single-electron spin and photon-electron quantum interface. However, the technology has not yet been realized for self-assembled quantum dots despite their fascinating transport phenomena and outstanding optical functionalities. In this paper, we report charge sensing experiments in self-assembled quantum dots. We choose two adjacent dots, and fabricate source and drain electrodes on each dot, in which either dot works as a charge sensor for the other target dot. The sensor dot current significantly changes when the number of electrons in the target dot changes by one, demonstrating single-electron charge sensing. We have also demonstrated real-time detection of single-electron tunnelling events. This charge sensing technique will be an important step towards combining efficient electrical readout of single-electron with intriguing quantum transport physics or advanced optical and photonic technologies developed for self-assembled quantum dots.

Enhanced Charge Transfer from Coinage Metal Doped InP Quantum Dots.

Project description:This paper describes coinage-metal-doped InP quantum dots (QDs) as a platform for enhanced electron transfer to molecular acceptors relative to undoped QDs. A synthetic strategy is developed to prepare doped InP/ZnSe QDs. First-principles DFT calculations show that Ag+ and Cu+ dopants localize photoexcited holes while leaving electrons delocalized. This charge carrier wave function modulation is leveraged to enhance electron transfer to molecular acceptors by up to an order of magnitude. Examination of photoluminescence quenching data suggests that larger electron acceptors, such as anthraquinone and methyl viologen, bind to the QD surface in two ways: by direct adsorption to the surface and by adsorption following displacement of a weakly bound surface cation-ligand complex. Reactions with larger acceptors show the greatest increases in electron transfer between doped and undoped quantum dots, while smaller acceptors show smaller enhancements. Specifically, benzoquinone shows the smallest, followed by naphthoquinone and then methyl viologen and anthraquinone. These results demonstrate the benefits of dopant-induced excited-state carrier localization on photoinduced charge transfer and highlight design principles for improved implementation of quantum dots in photoredox catalysis.

Passivation and characterization of charge defects in ambipolar silicon quantum dots.

Project description:In this Report we show the role of charge defects in the context of the formation of electrostatically defined quantum dots. We introduce a barrier array structure to probe defects at multiple locations in a single device. We measure samples both before and after an annealing process which uses an Al2O3 overlayer, grown by atomic layer deposition. After passivation of the majority of charge defects with annealing we can electrostatically define hole quantum dots up to 180?nm in length. Our ambipolar structures reveal amphoteric charge defects that remain after annealing with charging energies of 10?meV in both the positive and negative charge state.

Ultrafast Charge Dynamics in Trap-Free and Surface-Trapping Colloidal Quantum Dots.

Project description:Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy is used to study subnanosecond charge dynamics in CdTe colloidal quantum dots. After treatment with chloride ions, these can become free of surface traps that produce nonradiative recombination. A comparison between these dots and the same dots before treatment enables new insights into the effect of surface trapping on ultrafast charge dynamics. The surface traps typically increase the rate of electron cooling by 70% and introduce a recombination pathway that depopulates the conduction band minimum of single excitons on a subnanosecond timescale, regardless of whether the sample is stirred or flowed. It is also shown that surface trapping significantly reduces the peak bleach obtained for a particular pump fluence, which has important implications for the interpretation of transient absorption data, including the estimation of absorption cross-sections and multiple exciton generation yields.

Deterministic optical polarisation in nitride quantum dots at thermoelectrically cooled temperatures.

Project description:We report the successful realisation of intrinsic optical polarisation control by growth, in solid-state quantum dots in the thermoelectrically cooled temperature regime (?200?K), using a non-polar InGaN system. With statistically significant experimental data from cryogenic to high temperatures, we show that the average polarisation degree of such a system remains constant at around 0.90, below 100?K, and decreases very slowly at higher temperatures until reaching 0.77 at 200?K, with an unchanged polarisation axis determined by the material crystallography. A combination of Fermi-Dirac statistics and k·p theory with consideration of quantum dot anisotropy allows us to elucidate the origin of the robust, almost temperature-insensitive polarisation properties of this system from a fundamental perspective, producing results in very good agreement with the experimental findings. This work demonstrates that optical polarisation control can be achieved in solid-state quantum dots at thermoelectrically cooled temperatures, thereby opening the possibility of polarisation-based quantum dot applications in on-chip conditions.

Tumor-Targeted Multimodal Optical Imaging with Versatile Cadmium-Free Quantum Dots.

Project description:The rapid development of fluorescence imaging technologies requires concurrent improvements in the performance of fluorescent probes. Quantum dots have been extensively used as an imaging probe in various research areas because of their inherent advantages based on unique optical and electronic properties. However, their clinical translation has been limited by the potential toxicity especially from cadmium. Here, a versatile bioimaging probe is developed by using highly luminescent cadmium-free CuInSe2/ZnS core/shell quantum dots conjugated with CGKRK (Cys-Gly-Lys-Arg-Lys) tumor-targeting peptides. This probe exhibits excellent photostability, reasonably long circulation time, minimal toxicity, and strong tumor-specific homing property. The most important feature of this probe is that it shows distinctive versatility in tumor-targeted multimodal imaging including near-infrared, time-gated, and two-photon imaging in different tumor models. In a glioblastoma mouse model, the targeted probe clearly denotes tumor boundaries and positively labels a population of diffusely infiltrating tumor cells, suggesting its utility in precise tumor detection during surgery. This work lays a foundation for potential clinical translation of the probe.
