The airway epithelium contains ionocytes, a rare cell type with high expression of Forkhead Box I1 (<i>FOXI1</i>) transcription factor and Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane conductance Regulator (<i>CFTR</i>), a chloride channel that is defective in cystic fibrosis (CF).
