Hydrogen Purification from Compact Palladium Membrane Module Using a Low Temperature Diffusion Bonding Technology.

ABSTRACT: This study investigates a compact palladium membrane module (CPMM) for hydrogen purification, assembled by diffusion bonding at a low-temperature (450 °C). This CPMM resulted in hydrogen (H2) flux of 18.3 mL cm-2 min-1 with H2/N2 selectivity of over 1100. The H2 purification test using a 60% H2/40% CO2 mixed gas confirmed that the CPMM can separate H2 with a concentration of more than 99%, with a pressure difference of 5 bar. Moreover, the volume of the diffusion bonded membrane module is decreased by 81.4% than the flame-type membrane module pre-studied in our laboratory.

Hydrogen Bonding with Hydridic Hydrogen-Experimental Low-Temperature IR and Computational Study: Is a Revised Definition of Hydrogen Bonding Appropriate?

Project description:Spectroscopic characteristics of Me3Si-H···Y complexes (Y = ICF3, BrCN, and HCN) containing a hydridic hydrogen were determined experimentally by low-temperature IR experiments based on the direct spectral measurement of supersonically expanded intermediates on a cold substrate or by the technique of argon-matrix isolation as well as computationally at harmonic and one-dimensional anharmonic levels. The computations were based on DFT-D, MP2, MP2-F12, and CCSD(T)-F12 levels using various extended AO basis sets. The formation of all complexes related to the redshift of the Si-H stretching frequency upon complex formation was accompanied by an increase in its intensity. Similar results were obtained for another 10 electron acceptors of different types, positive σ-, π-, and p-holes and cations. The formation of HBe-H···Y complexes, studied only computationally and again containing a hydridic hydrogen, was characterized by the blueshift of the Be-H stretching frequency upon complexation accompanied by an increase in its intensity. The spectral shifts and stabilization energies obtained for all presently studied hydridic H-bonded complexes were comparable to those in protonic H-bonded complexes, which has prompted us to propose a modification of the existing IUPAC definition of H-bonding that covers, besides the classical protonic form, the non-classical hydridic and dihydrogen forms.

How cryoprotectants work: hydrogen-bonding in low-temperature vitrified solutions.

Project description:Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) increases cell and tissue viability at low temperatures and is commonly used as a cryoprotectant for cryogenic storage of biological materials. DMSO disorders the water hydrogen-bond networks and inhibits ice-crystal growth, though the specific DMSO interactions with water are difficult to characterize. In this study, we use a combination of Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), molecular dynamics simulations, and vibrational frequency maps to characterize the temperature-dependent hydrogen bonding interactions of DMSO with water from 30 °C to -80 °C. Specifically, broad peaks in O-D stretch vibrational spectra of DMSO and deuterated water (HDO) cosolvent systems show that the hydrogen bond networks become increasingly disrupted compared to pure water. Simulations demonstrated that these disrupted hydrogen bond networks remain largely localized to the first hydration shell of DMSO, which explains the high DMSO concentrations needed to prevent ice crystal formation in cryopreservation applications.

Hydrogen spillover and substrate-support hydrogen bonding mediate hydrogenation of phenol catalyzed by palladium on reducible metal oxides.

Project description:Substrate-support interactions play an important role in the catalytic hydrogenation of phenolic compounds by ceria-supported palladium (Pd/CeO2). Here, we combine surface contrast solution NMR methods and reaction kinetic assays to investigate the role of substrate-support interactions in phenol (PhOH) hydrogenation catalyzed by titania-supported palladium (Pd/TiO2). We show that PhOH adsorbs on the catalyst via a weak hydrogen-bonding interaction between the -OH group of the substrate and one oxygen atom on the support. Interestingly, we observe that the addition of 20 mM inorganic phosphate results in a ∼2-fold destabilization of the PhOH-support interaction and a corresponding ∼2-fold inhibition of the catalytic reaction, suggesting an active role of the PhOH-TiO2 hydrogen bond in catalysis. A comparison of the data measured here with the results previously reported for a Pd/CeO2 catalyst indicates that the efficiency of the Pd-supported catalysts is correlated to the amount of PhOH hydrogen bonded to the metal oxide support. Since CeO2 and TiO2 have similar ability to uptake activated hydrogen from a noble metal site, these data suggest that hydrogen spillover is the main mechanism by which Pd-activated hydrogens are shuttled to the PhOH adsorbed on the surface of the support. Consistent with this hypothesis, Pd supported on a non-reducible metal oxide (silica) displays negligible hydrogenation activity. Therefore, we conclude that basic and reducible metal oxides are active supports for the efficient hydrogenation of phenolic compounds due to their ability to hydrogen bond to the substrate and mediate the addition of the activated hydrogens to the adsorbed aromatic ring.

Influence of Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions on Nuclearity and Structure of Palladium Tiara-like Complexes.

Project description:The role of intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions upon the nuclearity of palladium tiara-like complexes is reported herein. The synthesis of three palladium tiaras is described with three related thiolate ligands that vary in their hydrogen-bonding capability, amide vs ester for N-acetylcysteamine (tiara 1) vs 2-mercaptoethyl acetate (tiara 2) or ethyl thioglycolate (tiara 3), and in the relative position of the ester group, 2-mercaptoethyl acetate (2) or ethyl thioglycolate (3). Mass spectrometry indicates that, in the absence of protic solvents, N-acetylcysteamine reacts to form exclusively a six-membered tiara, [Pd(SCH2CH2NHCOCH3)2]6, 1, whereas the ester containing analogues form both six- and eight-membered tiaras. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies indicate the significance of intramolecular N-H···O hydrogen bonds in determining the nuclearity of the amide-containing tiara 1. NMR studies indicate that 1 is not in equilibrium with larger tiaras in solution, and that the smaller size of the aggregate inhibits the fluxional behavior of the pendant thiolate ligands, typically observed for larger tiaras. Electrochemical investigations of 1 reveal reductive processes that exhibit an increase in current upon addition of acid, along with the formation of palladium nanoparticles.

Hydrogen-bonding and packing features of membrane proteins: functional implications.

Project description:The recent structural elucidation of about one dozen channels (in which we include transporters) has provided further evidence that these membrane proteins typically undergo large movements during their function. However, it is still not well understood how these proteins achieve the necessary trade-off between stability and mobility. To identify specific structural properties of channels, we compared the helix-packing and hydrogen-bonding patterns of channels with those of membrane coils; the latter is a class of membrane proteins whose structures are expected to be more rigid. We describe in detail how in channels, helix pairs are usually arranged in packing motifs with large crossing angles (|tau| approximately 40 degrees ), where the (small) side chains point away from the packing core and the backbones of the two helices are in close contact. We found that this contributes to a significant enrichment of Calpha-H...O bonds and to a packing geometry where right-handed parallel (tau = -40 degrees +/- 10 degrees ) and antiparallel (tau = +140 degrees +/- 25 degrees ) arrangements are equally preferred. By sharp contrast, the interdigitation and hydrogen bonding of side chains in helix pairs of membrane coils results in narrowly distributed left-handed antiparallel arrangements with crossing angles tau = -160 degrees +/- 10 degrees (|tau| approximately 20 degrees ). In addition, we show that these different helix-packing modes of the two types of membrane proteins correspond to specific hydrogen-bonding patterns. In particular, in channels, three times as many of the hydrogen-bonded helix pairs are found in parallel right-handed motifs than are non-hydrogen-bonded helix pairs. Finally, we discuss how the presence of weak hydrogen bonds, water-containing cavities, and right-handed crossing angles may facilitate the required conformational flexibility between helix pairs of channels while maintaining sufficient structural stability.

Selective Formation of Intramolecular Hydrogen-Bonding Palladium(II) Complexes with Nucleosides Using Unsymmetrical Tridentate Ligands.

Project description:Three palladium(II) complexes with amino-amidato-phenolato-type tridentate ligands were synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. The strategic arrangement of a hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor adjacent to the substitution site of the PdII complex allowed the selective coordination of nucleosides. Among two pyrimidine-nucleosides, cytidine and 5-methyluridine, cytidine was successfully coordinated to the PdII complex while 5-methyluridne was not. On the other hand, both purine-nucleosides, adenosine and guanosine, were coordinated to the PdII complex. As purines have several coordination sites, adenosine afforded three kinds of coordination isomers expected from the three different donors. However, guanosine afforded a sole product according to the ligand design such that the formation of double intramolecular hydrogen-bond strongly induced the specific coordination by N1-position of guanine moiety. Furthermore, the preference of the nucleosides was evaluated by scrambling reactions. It was found that the preference of guanosine is nearly twice as high as adenosine and cytidine, owing to the three-point interaction of a coordination bond and two hydrogen bonds. These results show that the combination of a coordination and hydrogen bonds, which is reminiscent of the Watson-Crick base pairing, is an effective tool for the precise recognition of nucleosides.

Temperature-Dependent Solid-State NMR Proton Chemical-Shift Values and Hydrogen Bonding.

Project description:Temperature-dependent NMR experiments are often complicated by rather long magnetic-field equilibration times, for example, occurring upon a change of sample temperature. We demonstrate that the fast temporal stabilization of a magnetic field can be achieved by actively stabilizing the temperature of the magnet bore, which allows quantification of the weak temperature dependence of a proton chemical shift, which can be diagnostic for the presence of hydrogen bonds. Hydrogen bonding plays a central role in molecular recognition events from both fields, chemistry and biology. Their direct detection by standard structure-determination techniques, such as X-ray crystallography or cryo-electron microscopy, remains challenging due to the difficulties of approaching the required resolution, on the order of 1 Å. We, herein, explore a spectroscopic approach using solid-state NMR to identify protons engaged in hydrogen bonds and explore the measurement of proton chemical-shift temperature coefficients. Using the examples of a phosphorylated amino acid and the protein ubiquitin, we show that fast magic-angle spinning (MAS) experiments at 100 kHz yield sufficient resolution in proton-detected spectra to quantify the rather small chemical-shift changes upon temperature variations.

Strong correlation between electronic bonding network and critical temperature in hydrogen-based superconductors.

Project description:By analyzing structural and electronic properties of more than a hundred predicted hydrogen-based superconductors, we determine that the capacity of creating an electronic bonding network between localized units is key to enhance the critical temperature in hydrogen-based superconductors. We define a magnitude named as the networking value, which correlates with the predicted critical temperature better than any other descriptor analyzed thus far. By classifying the studied compounds according to their bonding nature, we observe that such correlation is bonding-type independent, showing a broad scope and generality. Furthermore, combining the networking value with the hydrogen fraction in the system and the hydrogen contribution to the density of states at the Fermi level, we can predict the critical temperature of hydrogen-based compounds with an accuracy of about 60 K. Such correlation is useful to screen new superconducting compounds and offers a deeper understating of the chemical and physical properties of hydrogen-based superconductors, while setting clear paths for chemically engineering their critical temperatures.

Refractive Index of 48 Neat Deep Eutectic Solvents and of Selected Mixtures: Effect of Temperature, Hydrogen-Bonding Donors, Hydrogen-Bonding Acceptors, Mole Ratio, and Water.

Project description:The refractive index (RI) is an important physiochemical property of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) for application in the optical identification of specific substances or measuring the concentration of solutes in solutions. However, the available data on the RI of DESs is limited. Here, a systematic investigation on the RI of 48 typical DESs and 30 mixtures with water was conducted under atmospheric pressure. The effect of temperature in the range 293.15-338.15 K, hydrogen-bonding donors (HBDs), and hydrogen-bonding acceptors (HBAs) on RI was investigated. Furthermore, the RI of DESs as a function of mass percentage in the range of 20-80% water was also studied. It was found that the RI of DESs and its aqueous binary mixtures decreases linearly with the increase of temperature. HBDs and HBAs had a significant influence on the RI of DESs. Among them, the RI of choline chloride (ChCl)/phenol and ChCl/o-cresol were obviously higher than those of other DESs. It was also found that the addition of water would decrease the RI of DESs, and the RI of DES content in percentage (wt %) of water binary mixtures increases linearly as a function of mass percentage of DESs for 20 DESs. However, for the other 10 DESs, there is no linear relationship between the RI and the DES content.

Hydrogen bonding sewing interface.

Project description:The strong force that originates from breaking covalent bonds can be easily quantified through various testing platforms, while weak interfacial sliding resistance (ISR), originating from hydrogen bonding or van der Waals (vdW) forces, is very challenging to measure. Facilitated by an in-house nanomechanical testing system, we are able to precisely quantify and clearly distinguish the interfacial interactions between individual carbon fibers and several substrates governed by either hydrogen bonding or vdW forces. The specific ISR of the interface dominated by vdW forces is 3.55 ± 0.50 μN mm-1 and it surprisingly increases to 157.86 ± 44.18 μN mm-1 if the interface is bridged by hydrogen bonding. The ad hoc studies demonstrate that hydrogen bonding rather than vdW forces has great potential in sewing the interface if both surfaces are supportive of the formation of hydrogen bonds. The findings will enlighten the engineering of interfacial interactions and further mediate the entire mechanical performance of structures.
