Complete chloroplast genome sequence of Lirianthe coco (Loureiro) N. H. Xia & C. Y. Wu (Magnoliaceae), a popular ornamental species.

ABSTRACT: Lirianthe coco (Loureiro) N. H. Xia & C. Y. Wu is a popular ornamental species of Magnoliaceae. In the present study, the complete chloroplast genome (cpDNA) of L. coco was sequenced, assembled, and analyzed. The results indicated that the size of chloroplast genome of L. coco is 159,828 bp, which exhibits a typical quadripartite structure including a large single-copy (LSC) region of 87,958 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,768 bp separated by a pair of identical inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 26,551 bp each. The genome contained 131 genes (113 unique), including 86 protein-coding genes (80 unique), 37 tRNA genes (29 unique), and 8 rRNA genes (4 unique). Phylogenetic analysis showed that L. coco is affinal to L. odoratissima and forms a nomophyletic group with the latter and L. delavayi.

Project description:Lirianthe hodgsonii is a tree species of Magnoliaceae as least concern. In the present paper, the complete chloroplast genome (cpDNA) and basic annotated information of L. hodgsonii were reported and its phylogenetic relationship with other species in Magnoliaceae was analyzed. The size of its complete cpDNA is 159,693 bp, with a typical quadripartite structure comprising a pair of inverted repeat (IR) regions of 26,546 bp, a large single-copy (LSC) region of 87,848 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,753 bp. The genome contains 131 unique genes, including 86 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis showed that L. hodgsonii is affinal to Lirianthe bidoupensis and they form a monophyletic group with other seven Lirianthe species. This Lirianthe clade is sister to the Dugandiodendron and Talauma clade with high support. All genera mentioned in this analysis are monophyletic under the system of Magnoliaceae by Sima and Lu.

Project description:Calibrachoa hybrida is a popular ornamental plant with colorful flowers. We present here the complete chloroplast genome sequence of C. hybrida. With a total length of 156,099 bp, it is comprised of a large single-copy (LSC) region of 86,695 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,694 bp separated by two inverted repeats (IRs) of 25,355 bp for each. A total of 132 genes were identified, consisting of 87 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis using complete chloroplast genomes clustered C. hybrida together with petunia into the subfamily Petunioideae within the family Solanaceae.

The size of cpDNA is 160,008 bp, with a typical quadripartite structure of a large single-copy (LSC) region of 88,037 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,809 bp separated by a pair identical inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 26,581 bp each. The genome contained 131 genes (113 unique), including 86 protein-coding genes (80 unique), 37 tRNA genes (29 unique), and eight rRNA genes (four unique). Phylogenetic analysis showed that M. champaca var. champaca is affinal to M. baillonii and they form a nomophyletic group with other eight Michelia species. This Michelia clade is sister to the Aromadendron cathcartii clade with high support. All genera mentioned in this analysis are nomophyletic under the system of Magnoliaceae by Sima and Lu.

Project description:Magnolia delavayi is a rare, famous ornamental and important medical tree endemic to China. Here, we assembled the complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of M. delavayi. Its length is 159,715 bp with four sub-regions: 87,906 bp of large single-copy region and 18,761 bp of small single-copy region are separated by two inverted repeats regions, each 26,524 bp. The genome contains 77 protein-coding genes, 6 rRNAs, and 29 tRNAs genes. Phylogenetic analysis of cp genome of M. delavayi with previously reported chloroplast genomes in Magnolia shows that M. delavayi is close to M. odoratissima with high bootstrap value.

Project description:Magnoliaceae are both economically and ornamentally important trees. Despite extensive studies in this family, the taxonomy of Michelia L. remains unclear, as well as the taxonomical status of Michelia alba. Herein, we report the complete chloroplast genome of M. alba DC. The chloroplast genome was 159,789 bp in length, with a large single-copy (LSC) region of 87,951 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,798 bp, separated by two inverted repeat (IRs) regions of 26,570 bp. It contained 156 genes, including 83 coding genes, 68 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The overall GC content was 39.3%, and 43.2%, 38.0%, 34.3%, in the IRs, LSC, and SSC regions, respectively. A phylogenetic analysis showed that M. alba is closely related to M. odora, with the genus Michelia nested inside Magnolia.

Project description:Primula bulleyana is a popular ornamental species, with high commercial values. Here, we reported the first chloroplast genome of P. bulleyana. The complete chloroplast genome is 150978 bp, containing a large single-copy (LSC) region of 82873 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 17,741 bp, and a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) regions of 25,182 bp. In total, there are 142 genes, 92 protein-coding genes, 8 rRNA genes, and 38 tRNA genes are annotated in the whole cp genome, including 119 unique genes, 82 unique CDSs, 29 unique tRNAs, and 4 unique rRNAs. The overall GC content of the cp genome is 37.1%. The phylogenetic tree shows that close relationships among P. bulleyana and Primula stenodonta.

Project description:Plants in Michelia, presented by Magnolia figo DC, are wonderful resources in Magnoliaceae, covering a series of aromatic plants. Despite extensive studies in this family, the M. figo complete chloroplast genome and the taxonomical status based on the whole chloroplast sequences remain unclear. Herein, we report the complete chloroplast genome of M. figo. The chloroplast genome was 160,113 bp in length, with a large single-copy (LSC) region of 88,113 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,797 bp, separated by two inverted repeat (protein-coding) regions of 26,602 bp. A total of 135 CDSs were found, including 129 genes, 85 protein-coding mRNAs, 36 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. The overall GC content was 39.3%, and GC percentages range from 34.3% to 43.2% throughout LSC, IRs, and SSC regions. Phylogenetic analysis showed that M. figo is most closely to Michelia odora and displayed a relationship that three Michelia were nested inside Magnolia. This announcement of the complete M. figo cp genome sequence could provide valuable information for further breeding, cp genetic modification, and phylogenetic study in Magnoliaceae.

The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Manglietia yuyuanensis (Magnoliaceae).

Project description:Manglietia yuyuanensis is an important afforestation and excellent broad-leaved tree species in southern China. In this study, we assembled the complete chloroplast genome of M. yuyuanensis based on the Illumina sequences, sequence analysis showed the genome was 160,078 bp in length presenting a typical quadripartite structure and contains an inverted repeat region (IR, 26,467 b), a small single-copy (SSC) region, and a large single-copy (LSC) region (18,785 and 88,359 bp, respectively). The overall GC content was 39.27%. The sequence contained 128 unique genes, including 81 protein-coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The maximum-likelihood (ML) phylogenetic analysis revealed that M. maudiae was closely related to Manglietia insignis. A phylogenetic analysis revealed that M. yuyuanensis is closely related to Manglietia glaucifolia, with the genus Manglietia.

Project description:Michelia xinningia is an evergreen garden plant with attractive and fragrant flowers. Michelia exhibits both interspecific and intraspecific phenotypic variability. However, the genetic diversity of M. xinningia has not been thoroughly investigated. This study analyzed the first chloroplast genome of M. xinningia, which was 160,082 bp, including a large single-copy (LSC) region of 88,112 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,798 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat (IRs) regions of 26,586 bp. It contained 133 genes, including 87 protein-coding genes, 38 transfer RNA genes, and eight ribosomal RNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that M. xinningia formed a close relationship with M. foveolata. This study will provide an opportunity to investigate genetic variation and could be useful for both species identification and conservation.

With its local use for food flavoring, medicine, and wood, M. mexicana has been of good economic importance. In the present study, the complete chloroplast genome of M. mexicana was assembled via the genome skimming data. As a typical quadripartite structure, the plastome of M. mexicana with 159,906 bp in length includes two inverted repeats (26,554 bp) separated by a small single copy region (18,761 bp) as well as a large single copy region (88,037 bp). This chloroplast genome consists of 131 different genes, including 86 protein coding genes (CDS), eight rRNA genes, and 37 tRNA genes. The maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis showed that M. mexicana from Central America was closely related to an evergreen species, M. odoratissima from East Asia.
