Multi-Functional Luminescent Coating for Wood Fabric Based on Silica Sol-Gel Approach.

ABSTRACT: Environmentally friendly protection coatings have obtained increasing attention for their use in wooden materials, which can be destroyed easily when exposed to outdoor environments. A series of silane sol coatings coordinated with Eu³⁺ was prepared by hydrolyzing silane compounds. The obtained luminescent coating with three-dimensional net structure showed excellent optical, anti-ultraviolet aging, and thermal stability. The hybrid silane-modified compound coating was well-distributed on the wood by Si-O bonds to prevent its removal. The compound coating could stave off the decomposition of wood by converting ultraviolet light into red light and a charring action can endow the wood with thermal stability at high temperature, demonstrating the improvement of fire resistance and radiation residence following prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light, proving its excellent anti-ultraviolet aging properties.

Novel sol-gel precursors for thin mesoporous eu(3+)-doped silica coatings as efficient luminescent materials.

Project description:Europium(III) ions containing mesoporous silica coatings have been prepared via a solvent evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) approach of different single-source precursors (SSPs) in the presence of Pluronic P123 as a structure-directing agent, using the spin-coating process. A deliberate tailoring of the chemical composition of the porous coatings with various Si:Eu ratios was achieved by processing mixtures of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and Eu(3+)-coordinated SSPs. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses demonstrate that the thin metal oxide-doped silica coatings consist of a porous network with a short-range order of the pore structure, even at high europium(III) loadings. Furthermore, luminescence properties were investigated at different temperatures and different degrees of Eu(3+) contents. The photoluminescence spectra clearly show characteristic emission peaks corresponding to the (5)D0 → (7)FJ (J = 0-5) transitions resulting in a red luminescence visible by the eyes, although the films have a very low thickness (150-200 nm).

Amine Functionalization of Silica Sol-Gel Thin Films via Kinetic Doping: A Novel, Green Approach.

Project description:Amine-functionalized thin films are highly desirable technologies for analytical, material, and biochemistry applications. Current functionalization procedures can be costly, environmentally unfriendly, and require many synthetic steps. Here, we present an inexpensive and facile way to functionalize a silica thin film with a 25?000 MW branched polyethylenimine (BPEI), consistent with green chemistry principles. Using UV-vis spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, BPEI was determined to be loaded into the film at an approximately 0.5 M concentration, which is a 500× increase from the loading solution used. The films were also tested for copper(II) sequestration to assess their potential for heavy metal sequestration and showed a high loading capacity of 10 ± 6 mmol/g. Films proved to be reusable, using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid to chelate copper and regenerate the films, with only a 6% reduction in the amount of copper(II) ions sequestered by the third use. The films also proved stable against leaching over the course of 1 week in solution, with less than 1% of the original BPEI lost under various storage conditions (i.e., storage in deionized (DI) water, storage in dilute BPEI solution, storage in DI water after annealing). These films show promise for multiple applications, from heavy metal sequestration to antifouling applications, while being inexpensive, facile, and environmentally friendly to synthesize. To our knowledge, this is the first time that BPEI has been doped into silica thin films.

Experimental data of inorganic gel based smart window using silica sol-gel process.

Project description:In this article experimental data are presented for inorganic gel based smart window fabricated using silica sol-gel process. Parallel beam transmittances were measured as functions of voltages for samples fabricated with different concentrations of nitric acid. Spectroscopic transmittance data at different driving voltages for samples fabricated with different LC concentrations are shown. Transmittance spectra of the Si-Ti based gel-based-liquid-crystal (GDLC) device measured as different driving voltages were compared with those of PDLC. GDLC showed much lower operating voltages, 10-15 V, for on-state. Formation of the LC droplet in gelation process is illustrated. The methyl organic group surrounds LC droplets. Demonstration of GDLC based smart window showed the successful operation with low driving voltages. GDLC window shows clear color, even at off-state, compared with PDLC.

Multifunctional Finishing of Cotton Fabric with Curcumin Derivatives Coatings Obtained by Sol-Gel Method.

Project description:Textile materials with fluorescent, repellent, or antimicrobial properties are increasingly used in common applications. Obtaining multi-functional coatings is of wide interest, especially for applications related to signaling or to the medical field. In order to increase the performance (color properties, fluorescence lifetime, self-cleaning or antimicrobial properties) of textile materials with special uses, a series of research was carried out regarding the modification of surfaces with nanosols. In this study, coatings with multiple properties were obtained by depositing nanosols on cotton fabrics generated through sol-gel reactions. These multifunctional coatings are hybrid materials in which the host matrix is generated using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and network modifying organosilanes:dimethoxydimethylsilane (DMDMS) or dimethoxydiphenylsilane (DMDPS) in a 1:1 mass ratio. Two curcumin derivatives were embedded in siloxane matrices, a yellow one (CY) that is identical to bis-demethoxycurcumin (one of the natural constituents in turmeric) and a red dye (CR) that has a N,N-dimethylamino group grafted in position 4 of the dicinnamoylmethane skeleton of curcumin. The nanocomposites obtained by embedding curcumin derivatives in siloxane matrices were deposited on cotton fabric and studied in relation to the dye and the type of host matrix. Fabrics coated with such systems provide a hydrophobic surface, have fluorescent and antimicrobial properties, change color depending on the pH, and therefore can be used in various fields where textiles provide signaling properties, self-cleaning, or antibacterial protection. The coated fabrics maintained their good multifunctional properties even after several washing cycles.

Synergistic Effects and Mechanism of Modified Silica Sol Flame Retardant Systems on Silk Fabric.

Project description:The nano-silica sol was prepared by sol-gel method, and the boric acid, urea, cyanoguanidine, melamine cyanurate (MCA), 1-hydroxyethane 1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP), and 6H-dibenz (C,E) (1,2) oxaphosphorin-6-oxide (DOPO) were added to the silica sol to modify the flame retardant through physical doping and chemical bonding. According to the formula proposed by Lewin, the calculation of flammability parameters were obtained by the limiting oxygen index meter, the micro calorimeter, the vertical burner, and the thermogravimetric analyzer proved that there was a synergistic or additive effect between the B/N/P flame retardant and the silica sol. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum, scanning electron microscopy, and pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were used to characterize the morphology, structure, and pyrolysis products of treated silk fabric and residues after combustion. The results show that the flame retardancy of silica-boron sol is mainly caused by endothermic reaction and melt covering reaction. Silicon-nitrogen sol acts as a flame retardant through endothermic reaction, release of gases, and melting coverage. Silicon-phosphorus sol achieves flame retardancy by forming an acid to promote formation of a carbon layer and melting coverage. Silica sol and other flame retardants show excellent flame retardanty after compounding, and have certain complementarity, which can balance the dosage, performance, and cost of flame retardants, and is more suitable for industrial development.

Fast nucleation for silica nanoparticle synthesis using a sol-gel method.

Project description:We have developed a method that for the first time allowed us to synthesize silica particles in 20 minutes using a sol-gel preparation. Therefore, it is critically important to understand the synthesis mechanism and kinetic behavior in order to achieve a higher degree of fine tuning ability during the synthesis. In this study, we have employed our ability to modulate the physical nature of the reaction medium from sol-gel to emulsion, which has allowed us to halt the reaction at a particular time; this has allowed us to precisely understand the mechanism and chemistry of the silica polymerization. The synthesis medium is kept quite simple with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor in an equi-volumetric ethanol-water system and with sodium hydroxide as a catalyst. Synthesis is performed under ambient conditions at 20 °C for 20 minutes followed by phasing out of any unreacted TEOS and polysilicic acid chains via their emulsification with supersaturated water. We have also demonstrated that the developed particles with various sizes can be used as seeds for further particle growth and other applications. Luminol, a chemiluminescent molecule, has been entrapped successfully between the layers of silica and was demonstrated for the chemiluminescence of these particles.

Functionalizing silica sol-gel with entrapped plant virus-based immunosorbent nanoparticles.

Project description:Advancements in understanding and engineering of virus-based nanomaterials (VBNs) for biomedical applications motivate a need to explore the interfaces between VBNs and other biomedically-relevant chemistries and materials. While several strategies have been used to investigate some of these interfaces with promising initial results, including VBN-containing slow-release implants and VBN-activated bioceramic bone scaffolds, there remains a need to establish VBN-immobilized three dimensional materials that exhibit improved stability and diffusion characteristics for biosensing and other analyte-capture applications. Silica sol-gel chemistries have been researched for biomedical applications over several decades and are well understood; various cellular organisms and biomolecules (e.g., bacteria, algae, enzymes) have been immobilized in silica sol-gels to improve viability, activity, and form factor (i.e., ease of use). Here we present the immobilization of an antibody-binding VBN in silica sol-gel by pore confinement. We have shown that the resulting system is sufficiently diffuse to allow antibodies to migrate in and out of the matrix. We also show that the immobilized VBN is capable of antibody binding and elution functionality under different buffer conditions for multiple use cycles. The promising results of the VBN and silica sol-gel interface indicate a general applicability for VBN-based bioseparations and biosensing applications.

Affinity of Electrochemically Deposited Sol⁻Gel Silica Films towards Catecholamine Neurotransmitters.

Project description:Dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine neurotransmitters can be detected by electrochemical oxidation in conventional electrodes. However, their similar chemical structure and electrochemical behavior makes a difficult selective analysis. In the present work, glassy carbon electrodes have been modified with silica layers, which were prepared by electroassisted deposition of sol⁻gel precursors. These layers were morphologically and compositionally characterized using different techniques, such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), TEM, FTIR, or thermogravimetric analysis⁻mass spectrometry (TG-MS). The affinity of silica for neurotransmitters was evaluated, exclusively, by means of electrochemical methods. It was demonstrated that silica adsorbs dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, showing different interaction with silica pores. The adsorption process is dominated by a hydrogen bond between silanol groups located at the silica surface and the amine groups of neurotransmitters. Because of the different interaction with neurotransmitters, electrodes modified with silica films could be used in electrochemical sensors for the selective detection of such molecules.

Optimization of Hybrid Sol-Gel Coating for Dropwise Condensation of Pure Steam.

Project description:We developed hybrid organic-inorganic sol-gel silica coatings with good durability in harsh environment (high temperatures, high vapor velocities) and with slightly hydrophobic behavior, sufficient to promote dropwise condensation (DWC) of pure steam. DWC is a very promising mechanism in new trends of thermal management and power generation systems to enhance the heat transfer during condensation as compared to film-wise condensation (FWC). The sol-gel coatings have been prepared from methyl triethoxy silane (MTES) and tetraethyl-orthosilicate (TEOS) and deposited on an aluminum substrate. The coatings were optimized in terms of precursor ratio and annealing temperature highlighting potentials and limits of such mixtures. A comprehensive surface characterization before and after saturated steam condensation tests has been performed and related to the thermal measurements for evaluating the heat transfer augmentation as compared to FWC obtained on untreated aluminum surfaces. The results showed that the developed hybrid organic-inorganic sol-gel silica coatings are promising DWC promoters.

Stable sol-gel hydroxyapatite coating on zirconia dental implant for improved osseointegration.

Project description:Aside from being known for its excellent mechanical properties and aesthetic effect, zirconia has recently attracted attention as a new dental implant material. Many studies have focused on hydroxyapatite (HA) coating for obtaining improved biocompatibility, however the coating stability was reduced by a byproduct produced during the high-temperature sintering process. In this study, to overcome this problem, we simply coated the zirconia surface with a sol-gel-derived hydroxyapatite (HA) layer and then sintered it at a varied temperature (<1000 °C). The surface showed a nanoporous structure, and there was no crystalline phase other than HA and zirconia when the sintering temperature was 800 °C. The adhesion strength of the HA layer (>40 MPa) was also appropriate as a dental implant application. In addition, in vitro cell experiments using a preosteoblast cell line revealed that the HA-coated zirconia surface acts as a preferable surface for cell attachment and proliferation than bare zirconia surface. In vivo animal experiments also demonstrated that the osteoconductivity of zirconia were dramatically enhanced by HA coating, which was comparable to that of Ti implant. These results suggest that the sol-gel-based HA-coated zirconia has a great potential for use as a dental implant material.
