Mutations in <i>KCNQ2</i>, which encodes a pore-forming K<sup>+</sup> channel subunit responsible for neuronal M-current, cause neonatal epileptic encephalopathy, a complex disorder presenting with severe early-onset seizures and impaired neurodevelopment.
