A Stretchable Pillararene-Containing Supramolecular Polymeric Material with Self-Healing Property.

ABSTRACT: Constructing polymeric materials with stretchable and self-healing properties arise increasing interest in the field of tissue engineering, wearable electronics and soft actuators. Herein, a new type of supramolecular cross-linker was constructed through host-guest interaction between pillar[5]arene functionalized acrylate and pyridinium functionalized acrylate, which could form supramolecular polymeric material via photo-polymerization of n-butyl acrylate (BA). Such material exhibited excellent tensile properties, with maximum tensile strength of 3.4 MPa and strain of 3000%, respectively. Moreover, this material can effectively dissipate energy with the energy absorption efficiency of 93%, which could be applied in the field of energy absorbing materials. In addition, the material showed self-healing property after cut and responded to competitive guest.

Exploring a naturally tailored small molecule for stretchable, self-healing, and adhesive supramolecular polymers.

Project description:Polymeric materials with integrated functionalities are required to match their ever-expanding practical applications, but there is always a trade-off between complex material performances and synthetic simplification. A simple and effective synthesis route is reported to transform a small molecule of biological origin, thioctic acid, into a high-performance supramolecular polymeric material, which combines processability, ultrahigh stretchability, rapid self-healing ability, and reusable adhesivity to surfaces. The proposed one-step preparation process of this material involves the mixing of three commercially available feedstocks at mild temperature without any external solvent and a subsequent cooling process that resulted in a dynamic, high-density, and dry supramolecular polymeric network cross-linked by three different types of dynamic chemical bonds, whose cooperative effects in the network enable high performance of this supramolecular polymeric material.

Stretchable and biodegradable self-healing conductors for multifunctional electronics.

Project description:As the regenerative mechanisms of biological organisms, self-healing provides useful functions for soft electronics or associated systems. However, there have been few examples of soft electronics where all components have self-healing properties while also ensuring compatibility between components to achieve multifunctional and resilient bio-integrated electronics. Here, we introduce a stretchable, biodegradable, self-healing conductor constructed by combination of two layers: (i) synthetic self-healing elastomer and (ii) self-healing conductive composite with additives. Abundant dynamic disulfide and hydrogen bonds of the elastomer and conductive composite enable rapid and complete recovery of electrical conductivity (~1000 siemens per centimeter) and stretchability (~500%) in response to repetitive damages, and chemical interactions of interpenetrated polymer chains of these components facilitate robust adhesion strength, even under extreme mechanical stress. System-level demonstration of soft, self-healing electronics with diagnostic/therapeutic functions for the urinary bladder validates the possibility for versatile, practical uses in biomedical research areas.

Stretchable, self-healing, transient macromolecular elastomeric gel for wearable electronics.

Project description:Flexible and stretchable electronics are emerging in mainstream technologies and represent promising directions for future lifestyles. Multifunctional stretchable materials with a self-healing ability to resist mechanical damage are highly desirable but remain challenging to create. Here, we report a stretchable macromolecular elastomeric gel with the unique abilities of not only self-healing but also transient properties at room temperature. By inserting small molecule glycerol into hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC), forming a glycerol/hydroxyethylcellulose (GHEC) macromolecular elastomeric gel, dynamic hydrogen bonds occur between the HEC chain and the guest small glycerol molecules, which endows the GHEC with an excellent stretchability (304%) and a self-healing ability under ambient conditions. Additionally, the GHEC elastomeric gel is completely water-soluble, and its degradation rate can be tuned by adjusting the HEC molecular weight and the ratio of the HEC to glycerol. We demonstrate several flexible and stretchable electronics devices, such as self-healing conductors, transient transistors, and electronic skins for robots based on the GHEC elastomeric gel to illustrate its multiple functions.

Stretchable self-healing hydrogels capable of heavy metal ion scavenging.

Project description:Self-healing hydrogels were prepared by simply mixing phytic acid (PA) and chitosan (CS) in water. Determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the hydrogels were found to be a three-dimensional (3D) porous network structure. The formation of the network structure was considered to be mainly driven by electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding, cooperating with the subtle balance of multiple noncovalent interactions. The rheological data indicated that the hydrogels presented excellent mechanical properties with an elastic modulus of 20 000 Pa and a yield stress exceeding 7000 Pa. The dynamic dissociation and recombination of hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction in fractured regions of the gels initiated the self-healable property of PA/CS hydrogels. Since PA had high coordination ability to metal ions, PA/CS hydrogels were shown to exhibit excellent capability for capturing heavy metal ions, for example, Pb2+ and Cd2+. The PA/CS hydrogels provided a simple, green, and high efficiency strategic approach to scavenging heavy-metal ions from industrial sewage.

Sialic Acid-Responsive Polymeric Interface Material: From Molecular Recognition to Macroscopic Property Switching.

Project description:Biological systems that utilize multiple weak non-covalent interactions and hierarchical assemblies to achieve various bio-functions bring much inspiration for the design of artificial biomaterials. However, it remains a big challenge to correlate underlying biomolecule interactions with macroscopic level of materials, for example, recognizing such weak interaction, further transforming it into regulating material's macroscopic property and contributing to some new bio-applications. Here we designed a novel smart polymer based on polyacrylamide (PAM) grafted with lactose units (PAM-g-lactose0.11), and reported carbohydrate-carbohydrate interaction (CCI)-promoted macroscopic properties switching on this smart polymer surface. Detailed investigations indicated that the binding of sialic acid molecules with the grafted lactose units via the CCIs induced conformational transformation of the polymer chains, further resulted in remarkable and reversible switching in surface topography, wettability and stiffness. With these excellent recognition and response capacities towards sialic acid, the PAM-g-lactose0.11 further facilitated good selectivity, strong anti-interference and high adsorption capacity in the capture of sialylated glycopeptides (important biomarkers for cancers). This work provides some enlightenment for the development of biointerface materials with tunable property, as well as high-performance glycopeptide enrichment materials.

Chaotropic-anion-induced supramolecular self-assembly of ionic polymeric micelles.

Project description:Traditional micelle self-assembly is driven by the association of hydrophobic segments of amphiphilic molecules forming distinctive core-shell nanostructures in water. Here we report a surprising chaotropic-anion-induced micellization of cationic ammonium-containing block copolymers. The resulting micelle nanoparticle consists of a large number of ion pairs (?60,000) in each hydrophobic core. Unlike chaotropic anions (e.g. ClO4(-)), kosmotropic anions (e.g. SO4(2-)) were not able to induce micelle formation. A positive cooperativity was observed during micellization, for which only a three-fold increase in ClO4(-) concentration was necessary for micelle formation, similar to our previously reported ultra-pH-responsive behavior. This unique ion-pair-containing micelle provides a useful model system to study the complex interplay of noncovalent interactions (e.g. electrostatic, van der Waals, and hydrophobic forces) during micelle self-assembly.

Highly Tough, Stretchable and Self-Healing Polyampholyte Elastomers with Dual Adhesiveness.

Project description:A new type of polyampholyte with unique viscoelastic properties can be easily synthesized by the copolymerization of butyl acrylate with dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and acid acrylate in one pot. The elastic modulus of the as-prepared polyampholyte can be easily tuned by adjusting the ratio between the butyl acrylate and ionic monomers. The polyampholyte synthesized by a low proportion of ionic monomer showed low tensile strength and high stretchability, resulting in good conformal compliance with the biological tissues and potent energy dissipation. Due to the existence of high-intensity reversible ionic bonds in the polymer matrix, excellent self-recovery and self-healing properties were achieved on the as-prepared polyampholytes. By combining the high Coulombic interaction and interfacial energy dissipation, tough adhesiveness was obtained for the polyampholyte on various substrates. This new type of polyampholyte may have important applications in adhesives, packaging and tissue engineering.

Stretchable Multiresponsive Hydrogel with Actuatable, Shape Memory, and Self-Healing Properties.

Project description:Smart hydrogels with responsive behaviors have attracted tremendous attention. However, it is still a challenge to synthesize stretchable hydrogels capable of changing their original properties in response to multiple external stimuli. Here, integration of actuation function, shape memory, and self-healing capability in a highly stretchable hydrogel under triple external triggers is achieved by rationally engineering multiple functional moieties. The hydrogel exhibits high stretchability (average relative strain (mm/mm) is >15) and excellent fatigue resistance during 100 loading cycles of 100% strain. Incorporating a moisture-insensitive polymer film with the hydrogel, hydroactuated functionality is demonstrated. Moreover, shape memory and self-healing abilities of the hydrogel are realized by the formation of ionic crosslinking or dynamic borate ester in conditions of multivalent cations and pH, respectively. Deformable plastic flowers are displayed in this work as a proof-of-concept, and it is believed that this smart hydrogel could be used in plenty of frontier fields, such as designing electronic devices, soft robotics, and actuators.

A Self-Healing Crease-Free Supramolecular All-Polymer Supercapacitor.

Project description:While traditional three-layer structure supercapacitors are under mechanical manipulations, the high-stress region concentrates, inevitably causing persistent structural problems including interlayer slippage, crease formation, and delamination of the electrode-electrolyte interface. Toward this, an all-polymeric, all-elastic and non-laminated supercapacitor with high mechanical reliability and excellent electrochemical performance is developed. Specifically, a polypyrrole electrode layer is in situ integrated into a silk fibroin-based elastic supramolecular hydrogel film with extensive hydrogen and covalent bonds, where a non-laminate device is realized with structural elasticity at the device level. The non-laminate configuration can avoid slippage and delamination, while the elasticity can preclude crease formation. Furthermore, under more severe mechanical damage, the supercapacitors can restore the electrochemical performance through non-autonomous self-healing capabilities, where the supramolecular design of host-guest interactions in the hydrogel matrix results in a superior self-healing efficiency approaching ≈95.8% even after 30 cutting/healing cycles. The all-elastic supercapacitor delivers an areal capacitance of 0.37 F cm-2 and a volumetric energy density of 0.082 mW h cm-3, which can well-maintain the specific capacitance even at -20 °C with over 85.2% retention after five cut/healing cycles.

A chemically fueled supramolecular glue for self-healing gels.

Project description:Chemically fueled supramolecular materials offer unique properties that include spatial and temporal control and even the ability to self-heal. Indeed, a few studies have demonstrated the ability to self-heal, however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we designed a peptide that forms a fibrillar network upon chemical fueling. We were surprised that the hydrogel could self-heal despite the lack of dynamics in the fiber assembly and disassembly. We explain this behavior by a mechanism that involves the chemically fueled peptide molecules that cannot self-assemble due to the lack of nucleation sites. When the fibers are perturbed, new nucleation sites form that help the assembly resulting in the healing of the damaged network. Furthermore, we generalized the behavior for other peptides. We refer to this non-assembling, chemically-fueled peptide as a molecular glue. In future work, we aim to explore whether this self-healing mechanism applies to more complex structures, narrowing the gap between biological and synthetic self-assemblies.
