Impacts of a large-scale model of Municipal Solid Waste: An Input-Output analysis for the largest Brazilian metropolitan region.

ABSTRACT: This article presents socio-economic, energetic and CO₂ emissions' impact by considering a large-scale integrated plant to treat Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (MRSP); the most important Brazilian macro-region. As an alternative to landfills, this plant offers a source of renewable energy and a good assessment of benefits the circular economy provides. Based on the most recent interregional economic transactions data, the proposed Input-Output model has shown reductions in the local energy demand (-0.31%), carbon emissions (-3.40%). On the other hand, it has suggested gains in the GDP (+0.21%) and formal job positions (+0.08% or 10.6k) when recyclables are introduced massively in the economy.

Analyzing Economy-Scale Solid Waste Generation Using the United States Environmentally-Extended Input-Output Model.

Project description:The United States Environmentally-Extended Input-Output (USEEIO) model includes commercial enterprises from 386 industrial sectors of the economy. The purpose of this work is to model the commercial generation of three streams of solid waste from USEEIO sectors: hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste excluding construction, and non-hazardous waste from construction. The waste accounts cover 536 waste materials, with commercial non-hazardous waste presently limited to municipal solid waste and construction and demolition debris. Total combined generation for all streams based on 2015 economic activity is approximately 775 million metric tons, with concrete from construction activities accounting for 44% of this mass. The chemical and plastics industries generate the most commercial hazardous waste per dollar of economic output. In most cases, waste materials such as paper, plastic, and metals are generated in greater quantities per dollar of industry output when compared to commercial construction materials and hazardous waste. When considering direct waste generation within an industry, USEEIO model rankings identified the highway and street construction and chemical manufacturing industries as potential areas to continue to pursue new innovations in material use. The rankings change when considering final consumption of goods and services, with various construction industries and state and local governments becoming more prominent. The full detailed waste models are publicly available and will be incorporated into future USEEIO releases. Quantification of waste material generation across the economy is an essential part of decision making because it will highlight areas where intervention may be beneficial.

Municipal Solid Waste Landfills Harbor Distinct Microbiomes.

Project description:Landfills are the final repository for most of the discarded material from human society and its "built environments." Microorganisms subsequently degrade this discarded material in the landfill, releasing gases (largely CH4 and CO2) and a complex mixture of soluble chemical compounds in leachate. Characterization of "landfill microbiomes" and their comparison across several landfills should allow the identification of environmental or operational properties that influence the composition of these microbiomes and potentially their biodegradation capabilities. To this end, the composition of landfill microbiomes was characterized as part of an ongoing USGS national survey studying the chemical composition of leachates from 19 non-hazardous landfills across 16 states in the continental U.S. The landfills varied in parameters such as size, waste composition, management strategy, geography, and climate zone. The diversity and composition of bacterial and archaeal populations in leachate samples were characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, and compared against a variety of physical and chemical parameters in an attempt to identify their impact on selection. Members of the Epsilonproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Clostridia, and candidate division OP3 were the most abundant. The distribution of the observed phylogenetic diversity could best be explained by a combination of variables and was correlated most strongly with the concentrations of chloride and barium, rate of evapotranspiration, age of waste, and the number of detected household chemicals. This study illustrates how leachate microbiomes are distinct from those of other natural or built environments, and sheds light on the major selective forces responsible for this microbial diversity.

Impacts of COVID-19 Outbreak on the Municipal Solid Waste Management: Now and beyond the Pandemic.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the municipal essential services, including municipal solid waste (MSW) management. This study has reviewed the literature on MSW and solid medical waste (SMW) management systems, waste management initiatives specific to this pandemic, as well as their impacts now and beyond. Waste segregation and separate treatment of waste streams play important roles in reducing the environmental, health, and social impacts of waste and waste management. The global warming potential of MSW and SMW were found to be varied from -0.64 to 520 kg CO2 equiv/tonne and -52.1 to 3730 kg CO2 equiv/tonne, respectively, which widely depend on the sterilization and disposal processes. Similarly, MSW and SMW disposal costs varied from 90 to $242/tonne and 12 to $1530.0/tonne, respectively. Various changes made to waste collection and management because of the COVID-19 pandemic affected waste segregation and recycling. Since the start of the pandemic, various sectors, including the food, waste management, and healthcare sectors, relied on the increased use of single-use plastics to prevent transmission of COVID-19. An environmentally friendly alternative (biodegradable/compostable) to widely used single-use plastics is desired for easing waste management problems. Although various initiatives are underway to manage growing volumes of MSW and SMW, while controlling the spreading of infectious diseases, the movable grate incineration technology coupled with an adequate disinfection process presents a potential solution in managing the COVID-19 waste challenges. The proper disinfection method and technological choices can mitigate the risk of spreading infections and can improve the waste management system's sustainability, especially the contaminated waste.

Assessment of Municipal Solid-Waste Landfill Liner Performance.

Project description:The leachate collection system (LCS) and leak detection system (LDS) flow rate data from 240 cells (or a combination of cells) at 54 municipal solid-waste landfills (located in seven US states) with double-liner systems were analyzed to assess the performance of the primary liner system. The average LCS leachate collection rates for the study sites ranged from 380 L ha-1 day-1 (40.7 gal. acre-1 day-1) to 22,400 L ha-1 day-1 (2,390 gal. acre-1 day-1) on a sitewide basis, and the average LDS leachate collection rates ranged from 1.8 L ha-1 day-1 (0.2 gal. acre-1 day-1) to 577 L ha-1 day-1 (61.7 gal. acre-1 day-1) on a sitewide basis. Assuming all leachate generated is collected either by the LCS or LDS, the data suggest that the primary liner systems' aggregated efficiency is over 98%. The collection efficiency at sites that used a composite liner (geomembrane underlain by a geosynthetic clay liner or a compacted clay liner) system was not statistically different from the sites that used only a geomembrane as the primary liner (geomembrane underlain by a permeable layer) (median of 99% for both types). Leakage rates were compared with those estimated from the equations used by the hydrologic evaluation of landfill performance (HELP) model. The comparison suggests that the equations used by the HELP model to estimate leakage through the liner overestimate the leakage rate through geomembrane primary liners but underestimate the leakage rate through composite primary liners based on the HELP-model-default defect size and suggested defect frequency. It is also possible that groundwater intrusion could contribute to a portion of the leachate collected from the LDS because leachate quality data collected from a few sites indicated the LCS leachate had a higher concentration of most constituents than the leachate collected from LDS.

Sustainable financing for municipal solid waste management in Nepal.

Project description:Financing municipal solid waste (MSW) services is one of the key challenges faced by cities in developing countries. This study used plastic waste, a constituent of MSW, to explore the possibility of generating revenue for financing MSW management in the municipalities of Nepal. The results of this study suggest that plastic material recovery could generate revenue, which is equivalent to 1.38 times of the plastic-waste-related management cost when collection efficiency reaches 66.7%. An increase in 1% of recovery rate and collection efficiency could cover an additional 4.64% and 2.06% of the costs of managing plastic waste, respectively. In addition, an increase in tax on imported plastic materials could also motivate recovery of plastic waste for recycle and reuse. An additional 1% tax on plastic imports would be sufficient to cover plastic-related waste management when plastic waste recovery and collection efficiency rates are low. This plastic recovery- revenue exercise could be expanded to other materials such as paper and metal to fully understand the possibility of sustainable financing of MSW management and reducing environmental harm in developing countries like Nepal.

Effect of Mass Proportion of Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator Bottom Ash Layer to Municipal Solid Waste Layer on the Cu and Zn Discharge from Landfill.

Project description:Municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) bottom ash is often used as the protection layer for the geomembrane and intermediate layer in the landfill. In this study, three sets of simulated landfills with different mass proportion of MSWI bottom ash layer to municipal solid waste (MSW) layer were operated. Cu and Zn concentrations in the leachates and MSW were monitored to investigate the effect of MSWI bottom ash layer on the Cu and Zn discharge from the landfill. The results showed that the Zn discharge was dependent on the mass proportion of MSWI bottom ash layer. The pH of landfill was not notably increased when the mass proportion of MSWI bottom ash layer to MSW layer was 1 : 9, resulting in the enhancement of the Zn discharge. However, Zn discharge was mitigated when the mass proportion was 2 : 8, as the pH of landfill was notably promoted. The discharge of Cu was not dependent on the mass proportion, due to the great affinity of Cu to organic matter. Moreover, Cu and Zn contents of the sub-MSW layer increased due to the MSWI bottom ash layer. Therefore, the MSWI bottom ash layer can increase the potential environmental threat of the landfill.

Effective photochemical treatment of a municipal solid waste landfill leachate.

Project description:This work aimed at studying the photochemical treatment of a landfill leachate using ultraviolet light, hydrogen peroxide, and ferrous or ferric ions, in a batch recycle photoreactor. The effect of inorganic carbon presence, pH, initial H2O2 amount (0-9990 mg L-1) as well as Fe(II) (200-600 ppm) and Fe(III) (300-700 ppm) concentrations on the total carbon removal and color change was studied. Prior to the photochemical treatment, a pretreatment process was applied; inorganic nitrogen and inorganic carbon were removed by means of air stripping and initial pH regulation, respectively. The leachate sent subsequently for photochemical treatment was free of inorganic carbon and contained only organic carbon with concentration 1200±100 mg L-1 at pH 5.1-5.3. The most favorable concentrations of H2O2 and ferric ions for carbon removal were 6660 mg L-1 and 400 ppm, respectively. Adjusting the initial pH value in the range of 2.2-5.3 had a significant effect on the organic carbon removal. The photo-Fenton-like process was more advantageous than the photo-Fenton one for leachate treatment. By applying the most favorable operating conditions, 88.7% removal of total organic carbon, 100% removal of total inorganic carbon, 96.5% removal of total nitrogen, and 98.2% color removal were achieved.

Assessing moisture contributions from precipitation, waste, and leachate for active municipal solid waste landfills.

Project description:Precipitation, evapotranspiration (ET), waste tonnage, landfill gas (LFG), and leachate data were aggregated from public sources to perform a 5-10 year water balance and estimate the contributions of three water sources (precipitation, incoming waste, and leachate recycling) for 36 active municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in Ohio, USA. Uniquely, the water balance incorporated waste decomposition, using gas collection data to inform mass loss from biodegradation. Moisture contents of 20-30% for incoming waste indicate that entrained water is the largest source of landfill moisture. Infiltration of precipitation into the landfill after ET was the second largest source. Even at facilities where a majority of the leachate generated was recirculated, it did not significantly affect the moisture content in that year. Using the water balance approach, it appears leachate recirculation is unlikely to increase moisture content above 40% by mass, a regulatory threshold in the US, which would impose stricter air pollution control requirements. However, poor stormwater management could easily allow for "bioreactor" conditions to develop. The calculated landfill moisture content was significantly affected by the assumed runoff coefficient (CRO) parameter. CRO values below 20% and above 50% produced unrealistically high or low moisture contents, respectively. This approach can assist operators and regulators in understanding the contribution of different sources to a landfill's moisture profile and avoid future operational problems.
