Synthesis of Selenium-Containing Polystyrene Microspheres and Using as Catalyst for Oxidation of Acrolein.

ABSTRACT: Selenium-containing polystyrene (DSe-PS) microspheres were synthesized by soap-free emulsion polymerization using 1,2-bis(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-vinylphenyl)diselane (FVPDSe) and divinylbenzene (DVB) as crosslinking agents. The particle size of the obtained DSe-PS was characterized by a scanning electron microscope and dynamic light scattering. The results showed that the diameter of the obtained DSe-PS microspheres could be adjusted by changing the ratio of the monomer and crosslinker/water. The diselenide moiety in the obtained DSe-PS microspheres could be oxidized to seleninic acid by H2O2 which can catalyze the oxidation of acrolein. The oxidized DSe-PS microspheres exhibited higher catalytic activity and selectivity to methyl acrylate in a model oxidation of acrolein.

Enzymatic synthesis of selenium-containing amphiphilic aliphatic polycarbonate as an oxidation-responsive drug delivery vehicle.

Project description:Although functional aliphatic polycarbonates (APCs) have attracted prominent research interest as stimuli-responsive biomaterials, the majority of functional APCs are fabricated by detrimental organometallic catalysts or organo-catalysts. Herein, a facile synthetic strategy based on enzymatic polymerization was developed to construct a selenium-containing amphiphilic aliphatic polycarbonate (mPEG-b-CMP45). Specifically, the selenium in its backbone framework underwent a hydrophobic-hydrophilic transition upon exposure to the abnormal ROS level of the tumor, thus providing a promising platform for ROS-triggered drug release. This amphiphilic mPEG-b-CMP45 efficiently encapsulated doxorubicin (DOX) via self-assembly in aqueous solution and showed an excellent ability to regulate the release of DOX in response to H2O2 at biologically relevant concentrations (100 μM). These DOX-loaded nanoparticles could easily be internalized into U87 cells and possess the inherent antitumor properties of DOX, while they exhibited much lower cytotoxicity in normal cells HL-7702. Moreover, in many cases, the introduction of selenium caused high cytotoxicity of the materials, but the cytotoxicity results in HL-7702 cells demonstrated the good biocompatibility of mPEG-b-CMP45. These collective data suggested the potential use of mPEG-b-CMP45 as a biocompatible and smart drug delivery vehicle.

Catalytic oxidation of polystyrene to aromatic oxygenates over a graphitic carbon nitride catalyst

Project description:The continuous increase in manufacturing coupled with the difficulty of recycling of plastic products has generated huge amounts of waste plastics. Most of the existing chemical recycling and upcycling methods suffer from harsh conditions and poor product selectivity. Here we demonstrate a photocatalytic method to oxidize polystyrene to aromatic oxygenates under visible light irradiation using heterogeneous graphitic carbon nitride catalysts. Benzoic acid, acetophenone, and benzaldehyde are the dominant products in the liquid phase when the conversion of polystyrene reaches >90% at 150 °C. For the transformation of 0.5 g polystyrene plastic waste, 0.36 g of the aromatic oxygenates is obtained. The reaction mechanism is also investigated with various characterization methods and procedes via polystyrene activation to form hydroxyl and carbonyl groups over its backbone via C–H bond oxidation which is followed by oxidative bond breakage via C–C activation and further oxidation processes to aromatic oxygenates. There is a real need to create materials capable of plastic recycling and upcycling. Here, the authors report a heterogeneous carbon nitride photocatalyst which efficiently converts polystyrene plastics into aromatic oxygenates, such as benzoic acid.

Extending Catalyst Life in Glycerol-to-Acrolein Conversion Using Non-thermal Plasma.

Project description:Booming biodiesel production worldwide demands valorization of its byproduct of glycerol. Acrolein, an important intermediate chemical, can be produced by gas-phase glycerol dehydration catalyzed by solid acids. Because catalysts that lead to high acrolein selectivity usually deactivate rapidly due to the formation of coke that blocks the active sites on their surface, one major challenge of this method is how to extend the service life of the catalyst. Silica-supported silicotungstic acid (HSiW-Si) is a good example of such a catalyst that shows good activity in glycerol dehydration to acrolein initially, but deactivates quickly. In this study, HSiW-Si was selected to probe the potential of using non-thermal plasma with oxygen-containing gas as the discharge gas (NTP-O2) to solve the catalyst deactivation problem. NTP-O2 was found to be effective in coke removal and catalyst regeneration at low temperatures without damaging the Keggin structure of the HSiW-Si catalyst.

Facile Synthesis of Mono-Dispersed Polystyrene (PS)/Ag Composite Microspheres via Modified Chemical Reduction.

Project description:A modified method based on in situ chemical reduction was developed to prepare mono-dispersed polystyrene/silver (PS/Ag) composite microspheres. In this approach; mono-dispersed PS microspheres were synthesized through dispersion polymerization using poly-vinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a dispersant at first. Then, poly-dopamine (PDA) was fabricated to functionally modify the surfaces of PS microspheres. With the addition of [Ag(NH₃)₂]⁺ to the PS dispersion, [Ag(NH₃)₂]⁺ complex ions were absorbed and reduced to silver nanoparticles on the surfaces of PS-PDA microspheres to form PS/Ag composite microspheres. PVP acted both as a solvent of the metallic precursor and as a reducing agent. PDA also acted both as a chemical protocol to immobilize the silver nanoparticles at the PS surface and as a reducing agent. Therefore, no additional reducing agents were needed. The resulting composite microspheres were characterized by TEM, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), XRD, UV-Vis and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The results showed that Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were homogeneously immobilized onto the PS microspheres' surface in the presence of PDA and PVP. PS/Ag composite microspheres were well formed with a uniform and compact shell layer and were adjustable in terms of their optical property.

Tailored N-Containing Carbons as Catalyst Supports in Alcohol Oxidation.

Project description:The introduction of N-containing functionalities in carbon-based materials is brought to stable and highly active metal-supported catalysts. However, up to now, the role of the amount and the nature of N-groups have not been completely clear. This study aims to clarify these aspects by preparing tailored N-containing carbons where different N-groups are introduced during the synthesis of the carbon material. These materials were used as the support for Pd nanoparticles. Testing these catalysts in alcohol oxidations and comparing the results with those obtained using Pd nanoparticles supported on different N-containing supports allowed us to obtain insight into the role of the different N-containing groups. In the cinnamyl alcohol oxidation, pyridine-like groups seem to favor both activity and selectivity toward cinnamaldehyde.

Cobalt-Tetraamide-Phthalocyanine Immobilized on Fe3O4/Chitosan Microspheres as an Efficient Catalyst for Baeyer-Villiger Oxidation.

Project description:Cobalt-Tetraamide-Phthalocyanine (CoTaPc) immobilized onto magnetic Fe3O4 chitosan microspheres (Fe3O4/CTO) was synthesized via a simple immersion method, which is an efficient catalyst for the oxidation of cyclic ketones to lactones with O2/benzaldehyde as the oxidant. The CoTaPc-Fe3O4/CTO catalyst was applied for the first time in the Baeyer-Villiger (B-V) oxidation reaction. Characterization results obtained from X-ray diffraction, UV-vis, Fourier transform infrared, and scanning electron microscopy showed that the combination of CoTaPc and magnetic Fe3O4/CTO microspheres was achieved. The catalyst could be easily separated from the reaction system with an external magnet and reused several times without the remarkable loss of activity. In addition, a possible radical mechanism for the B-V oxidation in this catalytic system is proposed and verified by controlled experiments.

Electric Field-Driven Assembly of Sulfonated Polystyrene Microspheres.

Project description:A designed assembly of particles at liquid interfaces offers many advantages for development of materials, and can be performed by various means. Electric fields provide a flexible method for structuring particles on drops, utilizing electrohydrodynamic circulation flows, and dielectrophoretic and electrophoretic interactions. In addition to the properties of the applied electric field, the manipulation of particles often depends on the intrinsic properties of the particles to be assembled. Here, we present an easy approach for producing polystyrene microparticles with different electrical properties. These particles are used for investigations into electric field-guided particle assembly in the bulk and on surfaces of oil droplets. By sulfonating polystyrene particles, we produce a set of particles with a range of dielectric constants and electrical conductivities, related to the sulfonation reaction time. The paper presents diverse particle behavior driven by electric fields, including particle assembly at different droplet locations, particle chaining, and the formation of ribbon-like structures with anisotropic properties.

Synthesis of Positively Charged Polystyrene Microspheres for the Removal of Congo Red, Phosphate, and Chromium(VI).

Project description:Uniform positively charged polystyrene microspheres were synthesized and further examined as a new sorbent for water remediation. The structures of the resulting sorbent were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The adsorption performance of the sorbent was evaluated using three typical pollutants, namely, Congo red, phosphate, and Cr(VI). The adsorption isotherms were fitted by the Langmuir and Freundlich models, while the adsorption kinetics was analyzed by the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion equations. The thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption process including changes of enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energy, and binding constant were obtained by isothermal titration calorimetry measurements. The effects of solution pH and competitive ions on the adsorption process were investigated. The adsorption isotherms could be better fitted by the Langmuir model, yielding maximum adsorption capacities of 18, 6.2, and 1.1 mg g-1 for the adsorption of Congo red, Cr(VI), and phosphate, respectively. The adsorption kinetics could be best described by the pseudo-second-order equation. The spent sorbent was regenerated by washing with 1 M KOH and showed outstanding long-term cyclic performance. The findings suggested that the positive charges at the surface of polystyrene microspheres could serve as effective sites for the immobilization of anionic pollutants in solutions owing to the electrostatic attraction.

Stereoselective Synthesis of Selenium-Containing Glycoconjugates via the Mitsunobu Reaction.

Project description:A simple and efficient route for the synthesis of new glycoconjugates has been developed. The approach acts as a model for a mini-library of compounds with a deoxy-selenosugar core joined to a polyphenolic moiety with well-known antioxidant properties. An unexpected stereocontrol detected in the Mitsunobu key reaction led to the most attractive product showing a natural d-configuration. Thus, we were able to obtain the target molecules from the commercially available d-ribose via a shorter and convenient sequence of reactions.

A Ruthenium(II) Water Oxidation Catalyst Containing a pH-Responsive Ligand Framework.

Project description:The synthesis of a new RuII-based water oxidation catalyst is presented, in which a nitrophenyl group is introduced into the backbone of dpp via a pH-sensitive imidazole bridge (dpp = 2,9-di-(2'-pyridyl)-1,10-phenanthroline). This modification had a pronounced effect on the photophysical properties and led to the appearance of a significant absorption band around 441 nm in the UV-vis spectrum upon formation of the monoprotonated species under neutral conditions. Theoretical investigations could show that the main contributions to this band arise from transitions involving the imidazole and nitrophenyl motif, allowing us to determine the pKa value (6.8 ± 0.1) of the corresponding, twofold protonated conjugated acid. In contrast, the influence of the nitrophenyl group on the electrochemical properties of the catalytic center was negligible. Likewise, the catalytic performance of Ru(dppip-NO2) and its parent complex Ru(dpp) was comparable over the entire investigated pH range (dppip-NO2 = 2-(4-nitrophenyl)-6,9-di(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline). This allowed the original catalytic properties to be retained while additionally featuring a functionalized ligand scaffold, which provides further modification opportunities as well as the ability to report the pH of the catalytic solution via UV-vis spectroscopy.
