Attosecond intra-valence band dynamics and resonant-photoemission delays in W(110).

ABSTRACT: Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with attosecond precision provides new insights into the photoelectric effect and gives information about the timing of photoemission from different electronic states within the electronic band structure of solids. Electron transport, scattering phenomena and electron-electron correlation effects can be observed on attosecond time scales by timing photoemission from valence band states against that from core states. However, accessing intraband effects was so far particularly challenging due to the simultaneous requirements on energy, momentum and time resolution. Here we report on an experiment utilizing intracavity generated attosecond pulse trains to meet these demands at high flux and high photon energies to measure intraband delays between sp- and d-band states in the valence band photoemission from tungsten and investigate final-state effects in resonant photoemission.

The Valence Band Structure of the [Ni(Salen)] Complex: An Ultraviolet, Soft X-ray and Resonant Photoemission Spectroscopy Study.

Project description:The valence band photoemission (VB PE) spectra of the [Ni(Salen)] molecular complex were measured by ultraviolet, soft X-ray and resonant photoemission (ResPE) using photons with energies ranging from 21.2 eV to 860 eV. It was found that the Ni 3d atomic orbitals' (AOs) contributions are most significant for molecular orbitals (MOs), which are responsible for the low-energy PE band at a binding energy of 3.8 eV in the VB PE spectra. In turn, the PE bands in the binding energies range of 8-16 eV are due to the photoionization of the MOs of the [Ni(Salen)] complex with dominant contributions from C 2p AOs. A detailed consideration was made for the ResPE spectra obtained using photons with absorption resonance energies in the Ni 2p3/2, N 1s, and O 1s Near-Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) spectra. A strong increase in the intensity of the PE band ab was found when using photons with an energy 854.4 eV in the Ni 2p3/2 NEXAFS spectrum. This finding is due to the high probability of the participator-Auger decay of the Ni 2p3/2-13d9 excitation and confirms the relationship between the PE band ab with the Ni 3d-derived MOs.

Anisotropic dynamics of two-photon ionization: An attosecond movie of photoemission.

Project description:Imaging in real time the complete dynamics of a process as fundamental as photoemission has long been out of reach because of the difficulty of combining attosecond temporal resolution with fine spectral and angular resolutions. Here, we achieve full decoding of the intricate angle-dependent dynamics of a photoemission process in helium, spectrally and anisotropically structured by two-photon transitions through intermediate bound states. Using spectrally and angularly resolved attosecond electron interferometry, we characterize the complex-valued transition probability amplitude toward the photoelectron quantum state. This allows reconstructing in space, time, and energy the complete formation of the photoionized wave packet.

Entangled Valence Electron-Hole Dynamics Revealed by Stimulated Attosecond X-ray Raman Scattering.

Project description:We show that broadband x-ray pulses can create wavepackets of valence electrons and holes localized in the vicinity of a selected atom (nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur in cysteine) by stimulated resonant Raman scattering. The subsequent dynamics reveals highly correlated motions of entangled electrons and hole quasiparticles. This information goes beyond the time-dependent total charge density derived from x-ray diffraction.

Nanoelectromechanical resonant narrow-band amplifiers.

Project description:This study demonstrates amplification of electrical signals using a very simple nanomechanical device. It is shown that vibration amplitude amplification using a combination of mechanical resonance and thermal-piezoresistive energy pumping, which was previously demonstrated to drive self-sustained mechanical oscillation, can turn the relatively weak piezoresistivity of silicon into a viable electronic amplification mechanism with power gains of >20 dB. Various functionalities ranging from frequency selection and timing to sensing and actuation have been successfully demonstrated for microscale and nanoscale electromechanical systems. Although such capabilities complement solid-state electronics, enabling state-of-the-art compact and high-performance electronics, the amplification of electronic signals is an area where micro-/nanomechanics has not experienced much progress. In contrast to semiconductor devices, the performance of the proposed nanoelectromechanical amplifier improves significantly as the dimensions are reduced to the nanoscale presenting a potential pathway toward deep-nanoscale electronics. The nanoelectromechanical amplifier can also address the need for ultranarrow-band filtering along with the amplification of low-power signals in wireless communications and certain sensing applications, which is another need that is not efficiently addressable using semiconductor technology.

Direct time-domain observation of attosecond final-state lifetimes in photoemission from solids.

Project description:Attosecond spectroscopic techniques have made it possible to measure differences in transport times for photoelectrons from localized core levels and delocalized valence bands in solids. We report the application of attosecond pulse trains to directly and unambiguously measure the difference in lifetimes between photoelectrons born into free electron-like states and those excited into unoccupied excited states in the band structure of nickel (111). An enormous increase in lifetime of 212 ± 30 attoseconds occurs when the final state coincides with a short-lived excited state. Moreover, a strong dependence of this lifetime on emission angle is directly related to the final-state band dispersion as a function of electron transverse momentum. This finding underscores the importance of the material band structure in determining photoelectron lifetimes and corresponding electron escape depths.

Going beyond Pentacene: Photoemission Tomography of a Heptacene Monolayer on Ag(110).

Project description:Longer acenes such as heptacene are promising candidates for optoelectronic applications but are unstable in their bulk structure as they tend to dimerize. This makes the growth of well-defined monolayers and films problematic. In this article, we report the successful preparation of a highly oriented monolayer of heptacene on Ag(110) by thermal cycloreversion of diheptacenes. In a combined effort of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we characterize the electronic and structural properties of the molecule on the surface in detail. Our investigations allow us to unambiguously confirm the successful fabrication of a highly oriented complete monolayer of heptacene and to describe its electronic structure. By comparing experimental momentum maps of photoemission from frontier orbitals of heptacene and pentacene, we shed light on differences between these two acenes regarding their molecular orientation and energy-level alignment on the metal surfaces.

Anisotropic photoemission time delays close to a Fano resonance.

Project description:Electron correlation and multielectron effects are fundamental interactions that govern many physical and chemical processes in atomic, molecular and solid state systems. The process of autoionization, induced by resonant excitation of electrons into discrete states present in the spectral continuum of atomic and molecular targets, is mediated by electron correlation. Here we investigate the attosecond photoemission dynamics in argon in the 20-40?eV spectral range, in the vicinity of the 3s-1np autoionizing resonances. We present measurements of the differential photoionization cross section and extract energy and angle-dependent atomic time delays with an attosecond interferometric method. With the support of a theoretical model, we are able to attribute a large part of the measured time delay anisotropy to the presence of autoionizing resonances, which not only distort the phase of the emitted photoelectron wave packet but also introduce an angular dependence.

Determination of the valence band edge of Fe oxide nanoparticles dispersed in aqueous solution through resonant photoelectron spectroscopy from a liquid microjet.

Project description:We use X-ray photoemission and a near ambient pressure with a liquid microjet setup to investigate the electronic structure of FeOOH nanoparticles dispersed in aqueous solution. In particular, we show that by using X-ray resonant photoemission in dilute solutions, we can overcome the limits of conventional photoemission such as low nanoparticle-to-solvent signal ratio, and local nanoparticle charging and measure the valence band structure of FeOOH nanoparticles in aqueous solution with chemical specificity. The resonant photoemission signal across the Fe 2p3/2 absorption edge is measured for 2 wt% aqueous solutions of FeOOH nanoparticles (NPs) and the valence band maximum (VBM) of the hydrated FeOOH nanoparticles is determined. We compare the obtained VBM value in aqueous solution to that of FeOOH NPs in the dry phase. We show that the valence band edge position of NPs in the liquid phase can be accurately predicted from the values obtained in the dry phase provided that a simple potential shift due to solution chemistry is applied. Our results demonstrate the suitability of resonant photoemission in measuring the electronic structure of strongly diluted nanosystems where the conventional non-resonant photoemission technique fails.

Attosecond delays between dissociative and non-dissociative ionization of polyatomic molecules.

Project description:The interplay between electronic and nuclear motions in molecules is a central concept in molecular science. To what extent it influences attosecond photoionization delays is an important, still unresolved question. Here, we apply attosecond electron-ion coincidence spectroscopy and advanced calculations that include both electronic and nuclear motions to study the photoionization dynamics of CH4 and CD4 molecules. These molecules are known to feature some of the fastest nuclear dynamics following photoionization. Remarkably, we find no measurable delay between the photoionization of CH4 and CD4, neither experimentally nor theoretically. However, we measure and calculate delays of up to 20 as between the dissociative and non-dissociative photoionization of the highest-occupied molecular orbitals of both molecules. Experiment and theory are in quantitative agreement. These results show that, in the absence of resonances, even the fastest nuclear motion does not substantially influence photoionization delays, but identify a previously unknown signature of nuclear motion in dissociative-ionization channels. These findings have important consequences for the design and interpretation of attosecond chronoscopy in molecules, clusters, and liquids.

Molecularly Resonant Metamaterials for Broad-Band Electromagnetic Stealth.

Project description:Electromagnetic (EM) metamaterial is a composite material with EM stealth properties, which is constructed by artificially reverse engineering metal split resonance rings (SRR). However, the greatest limitation of EM metamaterials is that they can only stealth at a fixed and lower frequency of EM waves, and modern processing techniques still cannot meet the accuracy requirements to fabric nano-size structural unit. Nano-sized and even ultra-small SRR at molecular level are promising arrays to realize the ability of EM stealth function at a higher frequency, although it has proven challenging to synthesize long, straight, connected molecular SRR, and also difficult to arrange those molecular SRR into a strict array. Here, the study overcomes this challenge and demonstrates that the fabric of polypyrrole molecular SRR achieves an ultra-small inner diameter of 2.49 Å and realizes the arrays arrangement at molecular level. Furthermore, the study exploits the EM stealth function and verifies that such arrays of molecular SRR with 2.49 Å have the ability to reach high-performance EM stealth in the range of 106 -1016 Hz. This design concept opens a pathway for developing new metamaterials with broadband EM wave stealth and also serves the wider range of new applications.
