Entangled Valence Electron-Hole Dynamics Revealed by Stimulated Attosecond X-ray Raman Scattering.

ABSTRACT: We show that broadband x-ray pulses can create wavepackets of valence electrons and holes localized in the vicinity of a selected atom (nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur in cysteine) by stimulated resonant Raman scattering. The subsequent dynamics reveals highly correlated motions of entangled electrons and hole quasiparticles. This information goes beyond the time-dependent total charge density derived from x-ray diffraction.

Monitoring Long-Range Electron Transfer Pathways in Proteins by Stimulated Attosecond Broadband X-ray Raman Spectroscopy.

Project description:Long-range electron transfer (ET) is a crucial step in many energy conversion processes and biological redox reactions in living organisms. We show that newly developed X-ray pulses can directly probe the evolving oxidation states and the electronic structure around selected atoms with detail not available through conventional time-resolved infrared or optical techniques. This is demonstrated in a simulation study of the stimulated X-ray Raman (SXRS) signals in Re-modified azurin, which serves as a benchmark system for photoinduced ET in proteins. Nonlinear SXRS signals offer a direct novel window into the long-range ET mechanism.

Coupled Cluster Simulation of Impulsive Stimulated X-ray Raman Scattering.

Project description:Time-dependent equation-of-motion coupled cluster (TD-EOM-CC) is used to simulate impulsive stimulated X-ray Raman scattering (ISXRS) of ultrashort laser pulses by neon, carbon monoxide, pyrrole, and p-aminophenol. The TD-EOM-CC equations are expressed in the basis of field-free EOM-CC states, where the calculation of the core-excited states is simplified through the use of the core-valence separation (CVS) approximation. The transfer of electronic population from the ground state to the core- and valence-excited states is calculated for different numbers of included core- and valence-excited states, as well as for electric field pulses with different polarizations and carrier frequencies. The results indicate that Gaussian pulses can transfer significant electronic populations to the valence states through the Raman process. The sensitivity of this population transfer to the model parameters is analyzed. The time-dependent electronic density for p-aminophenol is also showcased, supporting the interpretation that ISXRS involves localized core excitations and can be used to rapidly generate valence wavepackets.

Stimulated Raman Scattering in Ge Nanowires.

Project description:Investigating group-IV-based photonic components is a very active area of research with extensive interest in developing complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compatible light sources. However, due to the indirect band gap of these materials, effective light-emitting diodes and lasers based on pure Ge or Si cannot be realized. In this context, there is considerable interest in developing group-IV based Raman lasers. Nevertheless, the low quantum yield of stimulated Raman scattering in Si and Ge requires large device footprints and high lasing thresholds. Consequently, the fabrication of integrated, energy-efficient Raman lasers is challenging. Here, we report the systematic investigation of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in Ge nanowires (NWs) and axial Al-Ge-Al NW heterostructures with Ge segments that come into contact with self-aligned Al leads with abrupt metal-semiconductor interfaces. Depending on their geometry, these quasi-one-dimensional (1D) heterostructures can reassemble into Ge nanowires, Ge nanodots, or Ge nanodiscs, which are monolithically integrated within monocrystalline Al (c-Al) mirrors that promote both optical confinement and effective heat dissipation. Optical mode resonances in these nanocavities support in SRS thresholds as low as 60 kW/cm2. Most notably, our findings provide a platform for elucidating the high potential of future monolithically integrated, nanoscale low-power group-IV-based Raman lasers.

Electronic Resonant Stimulated Raman Scattering Micro-Spectroscopy.

Project description:Recently we have reported electronic pre-resonance stimulated Raman scattering (epr-SRS) microscopy as a powerful technique for super-multiplex imaging ( Wei, L. ; Nature 2017 , 544 , 465 - 470 ). However, under rigorous electronic resonance, background signal, which mainly originates from pump-probe process, overwhelms the desired vibrational signature of the chromophores. Here we demonstrate electronic resonant stimulated Raman scattering (er-SRS) microspectroscopy and imaging through suppression of electronic background and subsequent retrieval of vibrational peaks. We observed a change of the vibrational band shapes from normal Lorentzian, through dispersive shapes, to inverted Lorentzian as the electronic resonance was approached, in agreement with theoretical prediction. In addition, resonant Raman cross sections have been determined after power-dependence study as well as Raman excitation profile calculation. As large as 10-23 cm2 of resonance Raman cross section is estimated in er-SRS, which is about 100 times higher than previously reported in epr-SRS. These results of er-SRS microspectroscopy pave the way for the single-molecule Raman detection and ultrasensitive biological imaging.

Stimulated Raman scattering spectroscopic optical coherence tomography.

Project description:We integrate spectroscopic optical coherence tomography (SOCT) with stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) to enable simultaneously multiplexed spatial and spectral imaging with sensitivity to many endogenous biochemical species that play an important role in biology and medicine. The combined approach, termed SRS-SOCT, overcomes the limitations of each individual method. Ultimately, SRS-SOCT has the potential to achieve fast, volumetric, and highly sensitive label-free molecular imaging. We demonstrate the approach by imaging excised human adipose tissue and detecting the lipids' Raman signatures in the high-wavenumber region.

Coherent control of long-range photoinduced electron transfer by stimulated X-ray Raman processes.

Project description:We show that X-ray pulses resonant with selected core transitions can manipulate electron transfer (ET) in molecules with ultrafast and atomic selectivity. We present possible protocols for coherently controlling ET dynamics in donor-bridge-acceptor (DBA) systems by stimulated X-ray resonant Raman processes involving various transitions between the D, B, and A sites. Simulations presented for a Ru(II)-Co(III) model complex demonstrate how the shapes, phases and amplitudes of the X-ray pulses can be optimized to create charge on demand at selected atoms, by opening up otherwise blocked ET pathways.

Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy with Entangled Light: Enhanced Resolution and Pathway Selection.

Project description:We propose a novel femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS) technique that combines entangled photons with interference detection to select matter pathways and enhance the resolution. Following photoexcitation by an actinic pump, the measurement uses a pair of broad-band entangled photons; one (signal) interacts with the molecule and together with a third narrow-band pulse induces the Raman process. The other (idler) photon provides a reference for the coincidence measurement. This interferometric photon coincidence counting detection allows one to separately measure the Raman gain and loss signals, which is not possible with conventional probe transmission detection. Entangled photons further provide a unique temporal and spectral detection window that can better resolve fast excited-state dynamics compared to classical and correlated disentangled states of light.

In-line balanced detection stimulated Raman scattering microscopy.

Project description:We introduce a novel configuration for stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy, called In-line Balanced Detection (IBD), which employs a birefringent plate to generate a time-delayed polarization-multiplexed collinear replica of the probe, acting as a reference. Probe and reference cross the sample at the same position, thus maintaining their balance during image acquisition. IBD can be implemented in any conventional SRS setup, by adding a few simple elements, bringing its sensitivity close to the shot-noise limit even with a noisy laser. We tested IBD with a fiber-format laser system and observed signal-to-noise ratio improvement by up to 30?dB.

Quantitative chemical imaging with multiplex stimulated Raman scattering microscopy.

Project description:Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy is a newly developed label-free chemical imaging technique that overcomes the speed limitation of confocal Raman microscopy while avoiding the nonresonant background problem of coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy. Previous demonstrations have been limited to single Raman band measurements. We present a novel modulation multiplexing approach that allows real-time detection of multiple species using the fast Fourier transform. We demonstrate the quantitative determination of chemical concentrations in a ternary mixture. Furthermore, two imaging applications are pursued: (1) quantitative determination of oil content as well as pigment and protein concentration in microalgae cultures; and (2) 3D high-resolution imaging of blood, lipids, and protein distribution in ex vivo mouse skin tissue. We believe that quantitative multiplex SRS uniquely combines the advantage of fast label-free imaging with the fingerprinting capability of Raman spectroscopy and enables numerous applications in lipid biology as well as biomedical imaging.

Nanoscale nonreciprocity via photon-spin-polarized stimulated Raman scattering.

Project description:Time reversal symmetry stands as a fundamental restriction on the vast majority of optical systems and devices. The reciprocal nature of Maxwell's equations in linear, time-invariant media adds complexity and scale to photonic diodes, isolators, circulators and also sets fundamental efficiency limits on optical energy conversion. Though many theoretical proposals and low frequency demonstrations of nonreciprocity exist, Faraday rotation remains the only known nonreciprocal mechanism that persists down to the atomic scale. Here, we present photon-spin-polarized stimulated Raman scattering as a new nonreciprocal optical phenomenon which has, in principle, no lower size limit. Exploiting this process, we numerically demonstrate nanoscale nonreciprocal transmission of free-space beams at near-infrared frequencies with a 250 nm thick silicon metasurface as well as a fully-subwavelength plasmonic gap nanoantenna. In revealing all-optical spin-splitting, our results provide a foundation for compact nonreciprocal communication and computing technologies, from nanoscale optical isolators and full-duplex nanoantennas to topologically-protected networks.
