Purple non-sulfur bacteria (PNSB) are anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria harnessing simple organic acids as electron donors. PNSB produce <i>a</i>-aminolevulinic acid, polyhydroxyalcanoates, bacteriochlorophylls <i>a</i> and <i>b</i>, ubiquinones, and other valuable compounds.
