Mesocrystals from Platinum Nanocubes.

ABSTRACT: Platinum nanoparticles are widely known for their numerous electrochemical and catalytic applications. Enhanced or novel properties that may arise when ordering such particles in a highly defined manner, however, are still subject to ongoing research, as superstructure formation on the mesoscale is still a major challenge to be overcome. In this work, we therefore established a reproducible method to fabricate micrometer-sized superstructures from platinum nanocubes. Through small-angle X-ray scattering and electron diffraction methods we demonstrate that the obtained superstructures have a high degree of ordering up to the atomic scale and, therefore, fulfill all criteria of a mesocrystal. By changing the solvent and stabilizer in which the platinum nanocubes were dispersed, we were able to control the resulting crystal habit of the mesocrystals. Aside from mesocrystal fabrication, this method can be further utilized to purify nanoparticle dispersions by recrystallization with respect to narrowing down the particle size distribution and removing contaminations.

Shape induced symmetry in self-assembled mesocrystals of iron oxide nanocubes.

Project description:Grazing incidence small-angle scattering and electron microscopy have been used to show for the first time that nonspherical nanoparticles can assemble into highly ordered body-centered tetragonal mesocrystals. Energy models accounting for the directionality and magnitude of the van der Waals and dipolar interactions as a function of the degree of truncation of the nanocubes illustrated the importance of the directional dipolar forces for the formation of the initial nanocube clusters and the dominance of the van der Waals multibody interactions in the dense packed arrays.

Surface Plasmon Resonance Modulation by Complexation of Platinum on the Surface of Silver Nanocubes.

Project description:The use of plasmonic particles, specifically, localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR), may lead to a significant improvement in the electrical, electrochemical, and optical properties of materials. Chemical modification of the dielectric constant near the plasmonic surface should lead to a shift of the optical resonance and, therefore, the basis for color tuning and sensing. In this research, we investigated the variation of the LSPR by modifying the chemical environment of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) through the complexation of Pt(IV) metal cations near the plasmonic surface. This study is carried out by measuring the shift of the plasmon dipole resonance of Ag nanocubes (NCs) and nanowires (NWs) of differing sizes upon coating the Ag surface with a layer of polydopamine (PDA) as a coordinating matrix for Pt(IV) complexes. The red shift of up to 45 nm depends linearly on the thickness of the PDA/Pt(IV) layer and the Pt(IV) content. Additionally, we calculated the dielectric constant of the surrounding medium using a numerical method.

3D Binary Mesocrystals from Anisotropic Nanoparticles.

Project description:Binary mesocrystals offer the combination of nanocrystal properties in an ordered superstructure. Here, we demonstrate the simultaneous self-assembly of platinum and iron oxide nanocubes into micrometer-sized 3D mesocrystals using the gas-phase diffusion technique. By the addition of minor amounts of a secondary particle type tailored to nearly identical size, shape and surface chemistry, we were able to promote a random incorporation of foreign particles into a self-assembling host lattice. The random distribution of the binary particle types on the surface and within its bulk has been visualized using advanced transmission and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The 20-40 μm sized binary mesocrystals have been further characterized through wide and small angle scattering techniques to reveal a long-range ordering on the atomic scale throughout the crystal while showing clear evidence that the material consists of individual building blocks. Through careful adjustments of the crystallization parameters, we could further obtain a reverse superstructure, where incorporated particles and host lattice switch roles.

Phytochemical-Stabilized Platinum-Decorated Silver Nanocubes INHIBIT Adenocarcinoma Cells and Enhance Antioxidant Effects by Promoting Apoptosis via Cell Cycle Arrest.

Project description:(1) Background: The increasing use of silver and platinum bimetallic nanoparticles in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer presents significant advances in biomedical applications due to their extraordinary physicochemical properties. This study investigated the role of aqueous phytochemical extract in stabilizing platinum nanodots-decorated silver nanocubes (w-Pt@AgNPs) for enhancing antioxidant activities and their mechanism. (2) Methods: UV-Vis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the formed w-Pt@AgNPs. LC-QToF-MS/MS was used to analyze the bioactive compounds, while DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP were used to detect the scavenging potential. Flow cytometric assays were performed to investigate the cytotoxicity and the mechanism of cell death. (3) Results: Morphological studies indicated that w-Pt@AgNPs were cube in shape, decorated by platinum nanodots on the surfaces. Compared to ethanolic extract-synthesized e-Pt@AgNPs, w-Pt@AgNPs exhibited the strongest antioxidant and cytotoxic activity, as data from Annexin V and Dead cell labeling indicated higher induction of apoptosis. Despite the high proportion of early apoptotic cells, the w-Pt@AgNPs triggered a decrease in G1/G0 cell cycle phase distribution, thereby initiating a G2/M arrest. (4) Conclusions: By enhancing the antioxidant properties and promoting apoptosis, w-Pt@AgNPs exhibited remarkable potential for improved cancer therapy outcomes.

A critical analysis of calcium carbonate mesocrystals.

Project description:The term mesocrystal has been widely used to describe crystals that form by oriented assembly, and that exhibit nanoparticle substructures. Using calcite crystals co-precipitated with polymers as a suitable test case, this article looks critically at the concept of mesocrystals. Here we demonstrate that the data commonly used to assign mesocrystal structure may be frequently misinterpreted, and that these calcite/polymer crystals do not have nanoparticle substructures. Although morphologies suggest the presence of nanoparticles, these are only present on the crystal surface. High surface areas are only recorded for crystals freshly removed from solution and are again attributed to a thin shell of nanoparticles on a solid calcite core. Line broadening in powder X-ray diffraction spectra is due to lattice strain only, precluding the existence of a nanoparticle sub-structure. Finally, study of the formation mechanism provides no evidence for crystalline precursor particles. A re-evaluation of existing literature on some mesocrystals may therefore be required.

Nucleation of protein mesocrystals via oriented attachment.

Project description:Self-assembly of proteins holds great promise for the bottom-up design and production of synthetic biomaterials. In conventional approaches, designer proteins are pre-programmed with specific recognition sites that drive the association process towards a desired organized state. Although proven effective, this approach poses restrictions on the complexity and material properties of the end-state. An alternative, hierarchical approach that has found wide adoption for inorganic systems, relies on the production of crystalline nanoparticles that become the building blocks of a next-level assembly process driven by oriented attachment (OA). As it stands, OA has not yet been observed for protein systems. Here we employ cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryoEM) in the high nucleation rate limit of protein crystals and map the self-assembly route at molecular resolution. We observe the initial formation of facetted nanocrystals that merge lattices by means of OA alignment well before contact is made, satisfying non-trivial symmetry rules in the process. As these nanocrystalline assemblies grow larger we witness imperfect docking events leading to oriented aggregation into mesocrystalline assemblies. These observations highlight the underappreciated role of the interaction between crystalline nuclei, and the impact of OA on the crystallization process of proteins.

A non-classical synthetic strategy for organic mesocrystals.

Project description:Mesocrystals are ordered nanoparticle superstructures, often with internal porosity, which receive much recent research interest in catalysis, energy storage, sensors, and biomedicine area. Understanding the mechanism of synthetic routes is essential for precise control of size and structure that affect the function of mesocrystals. The classical synthetic strategy of mesocrystal was formed via self-assembly of nanoparticles with a faceted inorganic core but a denser (or thicker) shell of organic molecules. However, the potential materials and synthetic handles still need to be explored to meet new applications. In this work, we develop a non-classical synthetic strategy for organic molecules, such as tetrakis (4-hydroxyphenyl) ethylene (TPE-4OH), tetrakis (4-bromophenyl) ethylene (TPE-4Br), and benzopinacole, to produce mesocrystals with composed of microrod arrays via co-solvent-induced crystal transformation. The aligned nanorods are grown epitaxially onto organic microplates, directed by small lattice mismatch between plates and rods. Thus, the present work offers general synthetic handle for establishing well-organized organic mesocrystals.

An NMR Study of Biomimetic Fluorapatite - Gelatine Mesocrystals.

Project description:The mesocrystal system fluoroapatite-gelatine grown by double-diffusion is characterized by hierarchical composite structure on a mesoscale. In the present work we apply solid state NMR to characterize its structure on the molecular level and provide a link between the structural organisation on the mesoscale and atomistic computer simulations. Thus, we find that the individual nanocrystals are composed of crystalline fluorapatite domains covered by a thin boundary apatite-like layer. The latter is in contact with an amorphous layer, which fills the interparticle space. The amorphous layer is comprised of the organic matrix impregnated by isolated phosphate groups, Ca3F motifs and water molecules. Our NMR data provide clear evidence for the existence of precursor complexes in the gelatine phase, which were not involved in the formation of apatite crystals, proving hence theoretical predictions on the structural pre-treatment of gelatine by ion impregnation. The interfacial interactions, which may be described as the glue holding the composite materials together, comprise hydrogen bond interactions with the apatite PO4(3-) groups. The reported results are in a good agreement with molecular dynamics simulations, which address the mechanisms of a growth control by collagen fibers, and with experimental observations of an amorphous cover layer in biominerals.

Tailored Synthesis of Iron Oxide Nanocrystals for Formation of Cuboid Mesocrystals.

Project description:In this work, we systematically studied the shape- and size-controlled monodisperse synthesis of iron oxide nanocrystals (IONCs) for their use as building blocks in the formation of mesocrystals. For this aim, on understanding the influence of the oleic acid concentration, iron-oleate concentration, and heating rate on the synthesis of robust and reproducible IONCs with desired sizes and shapes, we synthesized highly monodisperse ∼11 nm sized nanocubes and nanospheres. Magnetic measurements of both cubic and spherical IONCs revealed the presence of mixed paramagnetic and superparamagnetic phases in these nanocrystals. Moreover, we observed that the magnetic moments of the nanocubes are more substantial compared to their spherical counterparts. We then demonstrated a simple magnetic-field-assisted assembly of nanocubes into three-dimensional (3D) cuboid mesocrystals while nanospheres did not form any mesocrystals. These findings indicate that small cubic nanocrystals hold great promise as potential building blocks of 3D magnetic hierarchical structures with their superior magnetic properties and mesocrystal assembly capability, which may have high relevance in various fields ranging from high-density data storage to biomedical applications.

Unusual packing of soft-shelled nanocubes.

Project description:Space-filling generally governs hard particle packing and the resulting phases and interparticle orientations. Contrastingly, hard-shaped nanoparticles with grafted soft-ligands pack differently since the energetically interacting soft-shell is amenable to nanoscale sculpturing. While the interplay between the shape and soft-shell can lead to unforeseen packing effects, little is known about the underlying physics. Here, using electron microscopy and small-angle x-ray scattering, we demonstrate that nanoscale cubes with soft, grafted DNA shells exhibit remarkable packing, distinguished by orientational symmetry breaking of cubes relative to the unit cell vectors. This zigzag arrangement occurs in flat body-centered tetragonal and body-centered cubic phases. We ascribe this unique arrangement to the interplay between shape and a spatially anisotropic shell resulting from preferential grafting of ligands to regions of high curvature. These observations reveal the decisive role played by shell-modulated anisotropy in nanoscale packing and suggest a plethora of new spatial organizations for molecularly decorated shaped nanoparticles.
