Project description:Silver nanowires (AgNWs) have been successfully demonstrated to function as next-generation transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) in organic semiconductor devices owing to their figures of merit, including high optical transmittance, low sheet resistance, flexibility, and low-cost processing. In this article, high-quality, solution-processed AgNWs with an excellent optical transmittance of 96.5% at 450 nm and a low sheet resistance of 11.7 Ω/sq were demonstrated as TCEs in inorganic III-nitride LEDs. The transmission line model applied to the AgNW contact to p-GaN showed that near ohmic contact with a specific contact resistance of ~10(-3) Ωcm(2) was obtained. The contact resistance had a strong bias-voltage (or current-density) dependence: namely, field-enhanced ohmic contact. LEDs fabricated with AgNW electrodes exhibited a 56% reduction in series resistance, 56.5% brighter output power, a 67.5% reduction in efficiency droop, and a approximately 30% longer current spreading length compared to LEDs fabricated with reference TCEs. In addition to the cost reduction, the observed improvements in device performance suggest that the AgNWs are promising for application as next-generation TCEs, to realise brighter, larger-area, cost-competitive inorganic III-nitride light emitters.

Project description:In this study, we report on the application of a dielectric/ultra-thin metal/dielectric (DMD) multilayer consisting of ytterbium (Yb)-doped molybdenum oxide (MoO3)/silver (Ag)/MoO3 stacked as the transparent cathode in top-emitting green quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLED). By optimizing the Yb doping ratio, we have highly improved the electron injection ability from 0.01 to 0.35. In addition, the dielectric/ultra-thin metal/dielectric (DMD) cathode also shows a low sheet resistance of only 12.2 ?/sq, which is superior to the resistance of the commercially-available indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode (~15 ?/sq). The DMD multilayer exhibits a maximum transmittance of 75% and an average transmittance of 70% over the visible range of 400-700 nm. The optimized DMD-based G-QLED has a smaller current leakage at low driving voltage. The optimized DMD-based G-QLED enhances the current density than that of G-QLED with indium zinc oxide (IZO) as a cathode. The fabricated DMD-based G-QLED shows a low turn-on voltage of 2.2 V, a high current efficiency of 38 cd/A, and external quantum efficiency of 9.8. These findings support the fabricated DMD multilayer as a promising cathode for transparent top-emitting diodes.

Project description:Efficient transparent quantum-dot light emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) are demonstrated by using a silver nanowire (AgNW) cathode. The devices are fabricated through a solution technique, not any vacuum processes are involved. Almost identical performance is obtained for both sides of the transparent device, which is primary due to the high transmittance of AgNW cathode. The maximum luminance (efficiency) for ITO and AgNW side is 25,040 cd/m(2) (5.6 cd/A) and 23,440 cd/m(2) (5.2 cd/A), respectively. The average specular transmittance of the device (involving the glass substrate) is over 60% in the visible range. This study indicates that AgNW electrodes can serve as a cost-effective, flexible alternative to ITO, and thereby improve the economic viability and mechanical stability of QD-LEDs. All the results suggest that this is an important progress toward producing transparent QD-LEDs based displays and lighting sources.

Project description:The electrohydrodynamic (EHD) jet spraying process is a good method for making quantum dot (QD) layers in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, controlling the morphology and large-scale fabrication of the QD layers are critical for realizing all-solution-processed QD-LEDs with high performance. Three spraying techniques were used with the EHD jet spraying technique: a big circular film method, a spiral-line method, and a straight-line method. These techniques were used to obtain QD films with good uniformity. The straight-line spray showed the most promise to obtain a uniform QD layer with large area, and QD-LEDs made with this method showed better performance with a low turn-on voltage of 3.0 V, a luminance of 7801 cd/m2, and a maximum current efficiency of 2.93 cd/A.

Project description:A smooth, ultra-flexible, and transparent electrode was developed from silver nanowires (AgNWs) embedded in a colorless polyimide (cPI) by utilizing an inverted film-processing method. The resulting AgNW-cPI composite electrode had a transparency of >80%, a low sheet resistance of 8 ?/?, and ultra-smooth surfaces comparable to glass. Leveraging the robust mechanical properties and flexibility of cPI, the thickness of the composite film was reduced to less than 10??m, which is conducive to extreme flexibility. This film exhibited mechanical durability, for both outward and inward bending tests, up to a bending radius of 30??m, while maintaining its electrical performance under cyclic bending (bending radius: 500??m) for 100,000 iterations. Phosphorescent, blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated using these composites as bottom electrodes (anodes). Hole-injection was poor, because AgNWs were largely buried beneath the composite's surface. Thus, we used a simple plasma treatment to remove the thin cPI layer overlaying the nanowires without introducing other conductive materials. As a result, we were able to finely control the flexible OLEDs' electroluminescent properties using the enlarged conductive pathways. The fabricated flexible devices showed only slight performance reductions of <3% even after repeated foldings with a 30??m bending radius.

Project description:Mobile and wearable devices are increasingly reliant on near-infrared (NIR) covert illumination for facial recognition, eye-tracking or motion and depth sensing functions. However, these small devices offer limited spatial real estate that is typically already occupied by their full-area electronic color displays. Here, we report a transparent perovskite light-emitting diode (LED) that could be overlaid across a color display to provide an efficient and high-intensity NIR illumination. Our transparent devices are constructed with an ITO/AZO/PEIE/FAPbI3/poly-TPD/MoO3/Al/ITO/Ag/ITO architecture, and offer a high average transmittance of more than 55% across the visible spectral region. In particular, our Al/ITO/Ag/ITO top transparent electrode was designed to offer a combination low sheet resistance and low plasma damage upon electrode deposition. The devices emit at 799 nm with a high total external quantum efficiency of 5.7% at a current density of 5.3 mA cm-2 and a high radiance of 1.5 W sr-1 m-2, and possess a large functional device area of 120 mm2. The efficient performance is ideal for battery-powered wearable devices, and could enable advanced security and sensing features on future smart-watches, phones, gaming consoles and augmented or virtual reality headsets.

Project description:Transition metal dichalcogenides are optically active, layered materials promising for fast optoelectronics and on-chip photonics. We demonstrate electrically driven single-photon emission from localized sites in tungsten diselenide and tungsten disulphide. To achieve this, we fabricate a light-emitting diode structure comprising single-layer graphene, thin hexagonal boron nitride and transition metal dichalcogenide mono- and bi-layers. Photon correlation measurements are used to confirm the single-photon nature of the spectrally sharp emission. These results present the transition metal dichalcogenide family as a platform for hybrid, broadband, atomically precise quantum photonics devices.

Project description:The phenomenon of positive aging, i.e., efficiency increased with time, is observed in quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). For example, the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of blue QLEDs is significantly improved from 4.93% to 12.97% after storage for 8 d. The origin of such positive aging is thoroughly investigated. The finding indicates that the interfacial reaction between Al cathode and ZnMgO electron transport layer accounts for such improvement. During shelf-aging, the Al slowly reacts with the oxygen from ZnMgO, and consequently, leads to the formation of AlO x and the production of oxygen vacancies in ZnMgO. The AlO x interlayer reduces the electron injection barrier while the oxygen vacancies increase the conductivity of ZnMgO and, as a result, the electron injection is effectively enhanced. Moreover, the AlO x can effectively suppress the quenching of excitons by metal electrode. Due to the enhancement of electron injection and suppression of exciton quenching, the aged blue, green, and red QLEDs exhibit a 2.6-, 1.3-, and 1.25-fold efficiency improvement, respectively. The studies disclose the origin of positive aging and provide a new insight into the exciton quenching mechanisms, which would be useful for further constructing efficient QLED devices.

Project description:The internal quantum efficiency of blue LEDs is almost close to the limit, therefore, advanced transparent electrode has been long explored for gaining high external quantum efficiency. However, work function mismatch at electrode-semiconductor interface remains the fundamental difficulty in obtaining low resistance ohmic contact. Here, we demonstrate the gas phase encapsulation of graphene layer on superfine Cu nanowires network by chemical vapor deposition for highly transparent LEDs. The fast encapsulation of graphene shell layer on Cu nanowires achieves high optoelectronic performance (33 ?/sq @ 95% T), broad transparency range (200~3000?nm) and strong antioxidant stability. A novel phenomenon of scattered-point contact is revealed at the Cu nanowires/GaN interface. Point discharge effect is found to produce locally high injection current through contact points, which can effectively overcome Schottky barrier and form ohmic contact. The transparent LED on Cu@graphene nanowire network is successfully lighted with bright blue emission.

Project description:We report the first demonstration of flexible white phosphor-converted light emitting diodes (LEDs) based on p-n junction core/shell nitride nanowires. GaN nanowires containing seven radial In0.2Ga0.8N/GaN quantum wells were grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition on a sapphire substrate by a catalyst-free approach. To fabricate the flexible LED, the nanowires are embedded into a phosphor-doped polymer matrix, peeled off from the growth substrate, and contacted using a flexible and transparent silver nanowire mesh. The electroluminescence of a flexible device presents a cool-white color with a spectral distribution covering a broad spectral range from 400 to 700 nm. Mechanical bending stress down to a curvature radius of 5 mm does not yield any degradation of the LED performance. The maximal measured external quantum efficiency of the white LED is 9.3%, and the wall plug efficiency is 2.4%.
