Assessing ecological literacy and its application based on linguistic ecology: a case study of Guiyang City, China.

ABSTRACT: To address the frequent emergence of ecological problems, ecology has intersected with various disciplines. From the perspective of linguistic ecology, ecological literacy is an important concept that combines the subjects of ecology and linguistics. It not only discusses ecological issues, but also establishes a linguistic framework. Here, we constructed a quantitative method of assessing ecological literacy from the perspective of linguistic ecology. Ecological literacy was divided into five parts: ecological knowledge literacy, ecological awareness literacy, ecological ethics literacy, ecological emotional literacy, and ecological behavioral literacy. Each of these was set with four quantitative indicators that were evaluated through eight questions. A case study was conducted to investigate the ecological literacy of the inhabitants of Guiyang City, one of China's top ten ecologically advanced cities. The results showed that the proposed assessment method was an effective way to evaluate the level of ecological literacy comprehensively. In the case analysis, the overall ecological literacy level of Guiyang inhabitants was relatively good, and the levels of the five specific dimensions of them in descending order were as follows: ecological ethics literacy, ecological emotional literacy, ecological awareness literacy, ecological knowledge literacy, and ecological behavioral literacy. The results of this study are conducive to the production of targeted ways to improve the level of ecological literacy for sustainable development.

Evaluation and diagnosis of obstacles to land-based ecological security in resource-based cities: A case study of Xingtai city.

Project description:To provide a theoretical basis for sustainable land resource utilization and a reference for areas with similar natural conditions, an evaluation index for land-based ecological security was constructed based on the Driving force-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) model and the improved analytic hierarchy process (IAHP) and entropy methods, and the land-based ecological security status of Xingtai city from 2006 to 2017 was evaluated. Then, the obstacles to land-based ecological security were diagnosed. The results show that the values of the comprehensive evaluation index of land-based ecological security were 0.28-0.66 in the period from 2006 to 2017. The value of the index of land-based ecological security was low in the first seven years and gradually improved in the last five years of the study period. However, the overall situation was grave, and the ecological security conditions were poor. The main obstacles to land-based ecological security were the usage of pesticides, investment in environmental pollution treatments, the degree of machine cultivation, the rate of cultivation and the usage of fertilizer in Xingtai city. Based on the results of the land-based ecological security evaluation and the main obstacles identified in Xingtai city, this paper proposes management strategies and suggestions for improving land-based ecological security in Xingtai city. The specific proposals are as follows: vigorously develop green agriculture, increase investment in environmental pollution control, increase input in science and technology, and strengthen supervision and management of land use.

Ecological analysis of Kashin-Beck osteoarthropathy risk factors in Tibet's Qamdo City, China.

Project description:We studied Tibet's Qamdo City, which currently hosts the most serious prevalence of Kashin-Beck osteoarthropathy (KB) in China. This study utilizes the geographical detector (GeoDetector) algorithm to measure the individual and interactive influences of risk factors on KB and to quantify the highest potential risk subzones of each principal factor. With a comprehensive consideration of 13 possible related factors, namely, the tectonic division, stratum, moisture index, gross domestic product, mean annual precipitation, soil type, groundwater type, elevation, mean annual temperature, vegetation type, geomorphic type, slope degree and slope aspect, our results indicate that the main exposure factors for KB in Qamdo City are geological factors (tectonic division and stratum), wetting factors (moisture index and mean annual precipitation), and an economic factor (gross domestic product). In contrast, other factors have little effect on the prevalence of KB in Qamdo City. All 13 factors either nonlinearly or bivariately enhance each other, and the interactions between these factors can increase the prevalence of KB. Consequently, it can be inferred that KB in Qamdo City is caused primarily by a set of multiple and interrelated disease risk factors.

Model application niche analysis: Assessing the transferability and generalizability of ecological models.

Project description:The use of models by ecologists and environmental managers, to inform environmental management and decision-making, has grown exponentially in the past 50 years. Due to logistical, economical, and theoretical benefits, model users frequently transfer preexisting models to new sites where data are scarce. Modelers have made significant progress in understanding how to improve model generalizability during model development. However, models are always imperfect representations of systems and are constrained by the contextual frameworks used during their development. Thus, model users need better ways to evaluate the possibility of unintentional misapplication when transferring models to new sites. We propose a method of describing a model's application niche for use during the model selection process. Using this method, model users synthesize information from databases, past studies, and/or past model transfers to create model performance curves and heat maps. We demonstrated this method using an empirical model developed to predict the ecological condition of plant communities in riverine wetlands of the Appalachian Highland physiographic region, U.S.A. We assessed this model's transferability and generalizability across (1) riverine wetlands in the contiguous U.S.A., (2) wetland types in the Appalachian Highland physiographic region, and (3) wetland types in the contiguous U.S.A. With this methodology and a discussion of its critical steps, we set the stage for further inquiries into the development of consistent and transparent practices for model selection when transferring a model.

Spatial-temporal dynamics and driving factor analysis of urban ecological land in Zhuhai city, China.

Project description:Ecological land is a type of land that has considerable ecological value. Understanding the evolution of urban ecological land in Zhuhai, China, holds great significance for revealing the evolution of ecological land in the Dawan District of southern China. We explored the temporal and spatial variation in urban ecological land in Zhuhai using the transformation matrix, equivalent ecological land, landscape index and ecological land center of gravity migration methods. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the mechanism of ecological land change, and a transition probability map of the ecological land in the study area was drawn. The results showed the following. (1) From 1991 to 2018, the area of ecological land in Zhuhai city continuously decreased, with a reduction in area of 274.8 km2, or 32.3%. Sharp changes mainly occurred from 1991 to 2000. (2) The ecological land in the study area has gradually become fragmented, and the degree of landscape heterogeneity has increased. Affected by the expansion of the outer edge of the city to the southwest and the construction of ecological land within the city, the center of gravity of the ecological land has shifted to the northeast by 1346 m. (3) The elevation, slope, distance from built-up land and growth rate of built-up land are important factors influencing the transformation of ecological land. In the future, rivers and shallow coastal waters, tidal flats, and grasslands in the study area have the highest probability of transformation. The Jinwan District and Xiangzhou District will face severe ecological land protection pressure. The method of spatial-temporal analysis of urban ecological land developed in this paper can be applied in similar studies on other cities, and the results obtained for Zhuhai, China, have reference value for future urban planning and ecological protection work.

Assessing ecological infrastructure investments.

Project description:Conventional markets can underprovide ecosystem services. Deliberate creation of a market for ecosystem services [e.g., a payments for ecosystem services (PES) scheme] can close the gap. The new ecosystem service market alters behaviors and quantities of ecosystem service provided and reveals prices for the ecosystems service: a market-clearing equilibrium. Assessing the potential for PES programs, which often act as ecological infrastructure investment mechanisms, requires forecasting the market-clearing equilibrium. Forecasting the equilibrium is complicated, especially at relevant social and ecological scales. It requires greater disciplinary integration than valuing ecosystem services or computing the marginal cost of making a land-use change to produce a service. We conduct an ex ante benefit-cost assessment and forecast market-clearing prices and quantities for ecological infrastructure investment contracts in the Panama Canal Watershed. The Panama Canal Authority could offer contracts to private farmers to change land use to increase dry-season water flow and reduce sedimentation. A feasible voluntary contracting system yields a small program of about 1,840 ha of land conversion in a 279,000-ha watershed and generates a 4.9 benefit-cost ratio. Physical and social constraints limit market supply and scalability. Service delays, caused by lags between the time payments must be made and the time services stemming from ecosystem change are realized, hinder program feasibility. Targeting opportunities raise the benefit-cost ratio but reduce the hectares likely to be converted. We compare and contrast our results with prior state-of-the-art assessments on this system.

Assessing social--ecological trade-offs to advance ecosystem-based fisheries management.

Project description:Modern resource management faces trade-offs in the provision of various ecosystem goods and services to humanity. For fisheries management to develop into an ecosystem-based approach, the goal is not only to maximize economic profits, but to consider equally important conservation and social equity goals. We introduce such a triple-bottom line approach to the management of multi-species fisheries using the Baltic Sea as a case study. We apply a coupled ecological-economic optimization model to address the actual fisheries management challenge of trading-off the recovery of collapsed cod stocks versus the health of ecologically important forage fish populations. Management strategies based on profit maximization would rebuild the cod stock to high levels but may cause the risk of stock collapse for forage species with low market value, such as Baltic sprat (Fig. 1A). Economically efficient conservation efforts to protect sprat would be borne almost exclusively by the forage fishery as sprat fishing effort and profits would strongly be reduced. Unless compensation is paid, this would challenge equity between fishing sectors (Fig. 1B). Optimizing equity while respecting sprat biomass precautionary levels would reduce potential profits of the overall Baltic fishery, but may offer an acceptable balance between overall profits, species conservation and social equity (Fig. 1C). Our case study shows a practical example of how an ecosystem-based fisheries management will be able to offer society options to solve common conflicts between different resource uses. Adding equity considerations to the traditional trade-off between economy and ecology will greatly enhance credibility and hence compliance to management decisions, a further footstep towards healthy fish stocks and sustainable fisheries in the world ocean.

Assessing Knowledge-Based and Perceived Health Literacy Among Japanese Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Project description:Health literacy assessment is a major aspect of planning health education for adolescents. We evaluated the health literacy of Japanese adolescents using both perceived and knowledge-based health literacy scales. Study questionnaires were administered to 773 junior and senior high school students aged 12 to 18 years. We tested a model describing the hierarchical relations between functional, communicative, critical, and knowledge-based health literacy using path analysis. Critical health literacy was found to be influenced by functional, communicative, and knowledge-based health literacy, while functional and knowledge-based health literacy were correlated. The model, with slight modification, was supported. The result indicates that perceived functional health literacy scores did not directly correlate with higher perceived critical health literacy; rather, they only informed critical health literacy when participants had high knowledge-based health literacy.

Smoking cessation-associated mortality reduction: A case-control study in Tianjin city, China.

Project description:IntroductionSmoking-attributed mortality is increasing steadily in most developing countries. The aim of the study is to assess the reduction in smoking-associated mortality following cessation.MethodsDeath data were collected from 2016 to 2017. Cases were deaths from pre-defined diseases of interest (65298); controls were deaths from pre-defined non-smoking-related diseases (13527). Case versus control odds ratios for ex-smokers versus smokers were calculated by age, sex, marital status and education with standardized logistic regression. These are described as mortality rate ratios (RRs, calculated as odds ratios), with a group-specific confidence interval (CI). The statistical analysis of the data was conducted from June to August 2019.ResultsFor deaths from pre-defined non-smoking-related diseases at age 35-59 years, the RRs for quitting smoking 0-4, 5-9 or ≥10 years ago and never smoking were 0.66 (95% CI: 0.55-0.78), 0.58 (95% CI: 0.38-0.88), 0.61 (95% CI: 0.45-0.82), and 0.43 (95% CI: 0.39-0.46), respectively. The same trend was found at ages 60-69 years and 70-79 years. Younger age of quitting (25-44 or 45-64 years) appeared to be associated with greater protection among the age groups: RR was 0.55 (95% CI: 0.42-0.74) and 0.67 (95% CI: 0.56-0.79), respectively, at age 35-59 years. Among the patients who died of lung cancer, the strong protective effect can only be observed when the duration of quitting is ≥10 years. The effect of smoking cessation on the risk of death from cardiovascular disease can be observed when the duration of quitting is 1-5 years.ConclusionsLonger durations of smoking cessation are associated with progressively lower mortality rates from the diseases of interest, such as lung cancer and other smoking related cancers. For sustainable monitoring of tobacco-attributed mortality, smoking information over decades, such as smoking duration and quit smoking years, should be recorded during registration of death.

Distribution and Potential Ecological Risk of Heavy Metals in Water, Sediments, and Aquatic Macrophytes: A Case Study of the Junction of Four Rivers in Linyi City, China.

Project description:The Yi River, the second longest river in Shandong Province, China, flows through Linyi City and is fed by three tributary rivers, Beng River, Liuqing River, and Su River in the northeastern part of the city. In this study, we determined the concentrations of five heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb) in water, sediment, and aquatic macrophyte samples collected from the junction of the four rivers and evaluated the potential ecological risk of heavy metal pollution. Most of the heavy metals in water were in low concentrations with the water quality index (WQI) below 1, suggesting low metal pollution. The sediments showed low heavy metal concentrations, suggesting a low ecological risk based on the potential ecological risk index (RI) and the geo-accumulation index (Igeo). The aquatic plant species Potamogeton crispus accumulated considerable amounts of heavy metals, which were closely related to the metal concentrations of the sediment. The plant species Salvinia natans also showed an excellent metal accumulation capability. Based on our results, the junction of the four rivers is only slightly polluted in terms of heavy metals, and the plant species P. crispus is a suitable bioindicator for sediment heavy metal pollution.
