Project description:Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-based thermosensitive hydrogels demonstrate great potential in biomedical applications. However, they have inherent drawbacks such as low mechanical strength, limited drug loading capacity and low biodegradability. Formulating PNIPAM with other functional components to form composited hydrogels is an effective strategy to make up for these deficiencies, which can greatly benefit their practical applications. This review seeks to provide a comprehensive observation about the PNIPAM-based composite hydrogels for biomedical applications so as to guide related research. It covers the general principles from the materials choice to the hybridization strategies as well as the performance improvement by focusing on several application areas including drug delivery, tissue engineering and wound dressing. The most effective strategies include incorporation of functional inorganic nanoparticles or self-assembled structures to give composite hydrogels and linking PNIPAM with other polymer blocks of unique properties to produce copolymeric hydrogels, which can improve the properties of the hydrogels by enhancing the mechanical strength, giving higher biocompatibility and biodegradability, introducing multi-stimuli responsibility, enabling higher drug loading capacity as well as controlled release. These aspects will be of great help for promoting the development of PNIPAM-based composite materials for biomedical applications.

Project description:There has been great interest in the use of porous polymers to remove organic dyes because of their adjustable surface area and task-specific functionality. We chose a triptycene-based porous polymer to ensure high porosity, and introduced crown ether into the sketch of the copolymer to significantly enhance the affinity for the organic dye molecules. Novel porous organic copolymers of triptycene and crown-ether-15 (POP-TCE-15) were obtained by a simple Friedel-Crafts reaction, and were highly effective in removing organic dyes from aqueous solution. POP-TCE-15 exhibited the best performance, with a maximum adsorption capacity of methylene blue, rhodamine B, and methyl orange of 787.4 mg g-1, 421.9 mg g-1, and 64.8 mg g-1, respectively, which is better than most reported adsorbents. Their adsorption rates and adsorption isotherms were well fitted with pseudo-second-order kinetic models and the Langmuir model. More importantly, POP-TCE-15 can be effectively regenerated and recycled at least 5 times without any loss of adsorption capacity. With a hierarchical porous structure, high surface area, high hydrophobicity, and excellent adsorption capacity for dyes, the POP-TCE polymers could be ideal adsorbents for water purification and treatment.

Project description:Photodegradable hydrogels have emerged as a powerful material platform for studying and directing cell behaviors, as well as for delivering drugs. The premise of this technique is to use a cytocompatible light source to cleave linkers within a hydrogel, thus causing reduction of matrix stiffness or liberation of matrix-tethered biomolecules in a spatial-temporally controlled manner. The most commonly used photodegradable units are molecules containing nitrobenzyl moieties that absorb light in the ultraviolet (UV) to lower visible wavelengths (~280 to 450 nm). Because photodegradable linkers and hydrogels reported in the literature thus far are all sensitive to UV light, highly efficient UV-mediated photopolymerizations are less likely to be used as the method to prepare these hydrogels. As a result, currently available photodegradable hydrogels are formed by redox-mediated radical polymerizations, emulsion polymerizations, Michael-type addition reactions, or orthogonal click chemistries. Here, we report the first photodegradable poly(ethylene glycol)-based hydrogel system prepared by step-growth photopolymerization. The model photolabile peptide cross-linkers, synthesized by conventional solid phase peptide synthesis, contained terminal cysteines for step-growth thiol-ene photo-click reactions and a UV-sensitive 2-nitrophenylalanine residue in the peptide backbone for photo-cleavage. Photolysis of this peptide was achieved through adjusting UV light exposure time and intensity. Photopolymerization of photodegradable hydrogels containing photolabile peptide cross-linkers was made possible via a highly efficient visible light-mediated thiol-ene photo-click reaction using a non-cleavage type photoinitiator eosin-Y. Rapid gelation was confirmed by in situ photo-rheometry. Flood UV irradiation at controlled wavelength and intensity was used to demonstrate the photodegradability of these photopolymerized hydrogels.

Project description:Monolayer Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) is a promising anode material for lithium ion batteries because of its high capacities. In this work, first principle calculations based on spin density functional theory were performed to investigate adsorption and diffusion of lithium on monolayer MoS2 with defects, such as single- and few-atom vacancies, antisite, and grain boundary. The values of adsorption energies on the monolayer MoS2 with the defects were increased compared to those on the pristine MoS2. The presence of defects causes that the Li is strongly bound to the monolayer MoS2 with adsorption energies in the range between 2.81 and 3.80 eV. The donation of Li 2s electron to the defects causes an enhancement of adsorption of Li on the monolayer MoS2. At the same time, the presence of defects does not apparently affect the diffusion of Li, and the energy barriers are in the range of 0.25-0.42 eV. The presence of the defects can enhance the energy storage capacity, suggesting that the monolayer MoS2 with defects is a suitable anode material for the Li-ion batteries.

Project description:A tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA)-functionalized nano-Fe3O4 magnetic composite material (nFe3O4@TEPA) was synthesized by a facile one-pot solvothermal method. It was characterized by elementary analysis (EA), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The results show that the nFe3O4@TEPA has an average size of ∼20 nm, with a saturation magnetization intensity of 48.2 emu g-1. Its adsorption properties were investigated by adsorbing fluorine ions, phosphate, Cr(vi) and their co-existing water system. The adsorption performance was studied as a function of solution pH, initial concentration of ions, contact time and temperature for each ion. The adsorption of the multi-ion co-existing system was studied via batch tests, XPS and FTIR analyses. The effect of co-existing ions was studied through Box-Behnken Design (BBD) and response surface methodology (RSM). It can be deducted that the adsorption mechanism of an individual fluorine ion or phosphate was mainly related to electrostatic attraction, while that of Cr(vi) might be mainly related to electrostatic attraction and coordination interactions. For the fluorine ion and phosphate bi-component system, their adsorption was competitive via ion exchange. For the Cr(vi), fluorine ion and phosphate tri-component co-existing system, Cr(vi) took priority for adsorption and could replace the absorbed fluorine ion or phosphate by competitive reaction, but not vice versa.

Project description:Carbon-based nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, nanodiamonds, and graphene, have been investigated for various biomedical applications, including biological imaging, photothermal therapy, drug/gene delivery, cancer therapy, biosensors, and electrochemical sensors. Graphene oxide (GO) has unique physicochemical properties and can be used to restore conductivity through oxidation. In this study, we developed poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-based nanogel systems containing GO for controlled in vitro drug delivery. The photothermal effects of the PNIPAM/GO- and PNIPAMAAM/GO-based nanogel systems were enhanced. The release of DOX from the PNIPAM/GO-based nanogel was achieved using the photothermal effect of near-infrared irradiation. Using a Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, the cytotoxicity of all conditions demonstrated that the PNIPAM composite-based nanogels were biocompatible with no significance.

Project description:Analogous to nucleic acids, the building blocks of nucleic acids and their derivatives are widely used to create supramolecular architectures for application mainly in the field of biomedicine. Here, we describe the construction of a multi-stimuli responsive and toxic dye adsorbing heterotypic hydrogel system formed using simple nucleoside-fatty acid conjugates. The nucleolipids are derived by coupling fatty acid chains of different lengths at the 5' position of ribothymidine and uridine. The nucleolipids in the presence of a strong base (e.g. NaOH) undergo partial hydrolysis, which triggers the self-assembly of the hydrolysed components resulting in the formation of heterotypic hydrogels. Notably, the gels are formed specifically in the presence of Na+ ions as other ions such as Li+ and K+ did not support the hydrogelation process. Systematic analysis by microscopy, NMR, single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction and rheology indicated that the deprotonated nucleolipid and fatty acid salt interdigitate and provide necessary electrostatic interactions supported by Na+ ions to set the path for the hierarchical assembly process. Notably, the hydrogels are highly sensitive to external stimuli, wherein gel-sol transition can be reversibly controlled by using temperature, pH and host-guest interaction. One of the hydrogels made of 5'-O-myristate-conjugated ribothymidine was found to selectively adsorb cationic dyes such as methylene blue and rhodamine 6G in a recyclable fashion. Taken together, the easily scalable assembly, multi-stimuli responsiveness and ability to capture and release dyes highlight the potential of our nucleolipid hydrogel system in material applications and in the treatment of dye industry wastes.

Project description:In this study, using molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) as laser-sensitive particles and poly(propylene) (PP) as the matrix resin, laser-markable PP/MoS2 composite materials with different MoS2 contents ranging from 0.005 to 0.2% were prepared by melt-blending. A comprehensive analysis of the laser marking performance of PP/MoS2 composites was carried out by controlling the content of laser additives, laser current intensity, and the scanning speed of laser marking. The color difference test shows that the best laser marking performance of the composite can be obtained at the MoS2 content of 0.02 wt %. The surface morphology of the PP/MoS2 composite material was observed after laser marking using a metallographic microscope, an optical microscope, and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). During the laser marking process, the laser energy was absorbed and converted into heat energy to cause high-temperature melting, pyrolysis, and carbonization of PP on the surface of the PP/MoS2 composite material. The black marking from carbonized materials was formed in contrast to the white matrix. Using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy, the composite materials before and after laser marking were tested and characterized. The PP/MoS2 composite material was pyrolyzed to form amorphous carbonized materials. The effect of the laser-sensitive MoS2 additive on the mechanical properties of composite materials was investigated. The results show that the PP/MoS2 composite has the best laser marking property when the MoS2 loading content is 0.02 wt %, the laser marking current intensity is 11 A, and the laser marking speed is 800 mm/s, leading to a clear and high-contrast marking pattern.
