Project description:Using N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and acrylic acid (AAc) as monomers, N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a cross-linking agent, and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as functional particles, a P(NIPAM-co-AAc)/MoS2 composite hydrogel was prepared by free radical polymerization initiated by ultraviolet light. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy show that MoS2 has been successfully introduced into the P(NIPAM-co-AAc) system, and the obtained composite hydrogel has a porous network structure. Studies on the swelling property and dye adsorption performance show that the addition of MoS2 can increase the swelling ratio of P(NIPAM-co-AAc) hydrogels to a certain extent and can significantly improve the ability of the P(NIPAM-co-AAc) hydrogel to adsorb methylene blue (MB). The adsorption process of MB by the composite hydrogels conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm adsorption models. The estimated equilibrium adsorption capacity (Q m) using the Langmuir isotherm model can reach 1258 mg/g, mainly due to the electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged groups -COO- and MoS2 particles on the network structure and the positively charged dye MB. The adsorption of MB by P(NIPAM-co-AAc)/MoS2 composite hydrogels depends on the temperature during adsorption. Compared with room temperature, a high temperature of 40 °C above the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) phase transition temperature (∼32 °C) leads to a decreased adsorption capacity of the P(NIPAM-co-AAc)/MoS2 composite hydrogel for MB due to the enhanced hydrophobic properties of the network structure and the decrease of the swelling ratio. The prepared hydrogel material can be used as a good adsorbent for dyes, which is promising in wastewater treatment.

Project description:Monolayer Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) is a promising anode material for lithium ion batteries because of its high capacities. In this work, first principle calculations based on spin density functional theory were performed to investigate adsorption and diffusion of lithium on monolayer MoS2 with defects, such as single- and few-atom vacancies, antisite, and grain boundary. The values of adsorption energies on the monolayer MoS2 with the defects were increased compared to those on the pristine MoS2. The presence of defects causes that the Li is strongly bound to the monolayer MoS2 with adsorption energies in the range between 2.81 and 3.80 eV. The donation of Li 2s electron to the defects causes an enhancement of adsorption of Li on the monolayer MoS2. At the same time, the presence of defects does not apparently affect the diffusion of Li, and the energy barriers are in the range of 0.25-0.42 eV. The presence of the defects can enhance the energy storage capacity, suggesting that the monolayer MoS2 with defects is a suitable anode material for the Li-ion batteries.

Project description:This article presents batch experimental data describing the main batch adsorption operation parameters. Also the adsorption models (adsorption isotherm, adsorption kinetics and thermodynamic studies) of basic yellow dye on to the raw and treated kaolin adsorbents. Besides, instrumental analyses were recorded to characterize kaolin adsorbent. Such as, thermogravimetric analyzer, Fourier transformation infrared and scanning electroscope with energy dispersion spectroscopy were used. UV-Visible spectrometer was used throughout the experimental study for the determination of absorbance. The effect of adsorption temperature (30 °C, 50 °C 70 °C), PH (3, 7, 9), initial dye concentration (20 mg/l, 40 mg/l, 60 mg/l), contact time (20 min, 40 min, 60 min, 80 min, 100 min) and adsorbent dosage (0.1, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 g/100ml) have been well determined. For adsorbent characteristics, we provide dataset regarding (i) thermogravimetery with differential scanning calorimetery, (ii) Fourier transform infrared spectral data before and after basic yellow dye adsorption process, (iii) scanning electroscope with energy dispersion spectroscopy image at ×500 resolution, (iv) X-ray diffraction and, (v) batch adsorption experimental parameters records. Regarding scanning electroscope with energy dispersion spectroscopy image, we provide data of three surface morphology image and three elemental distribution spectra for raw and treated kaolin adsorbent.

Project description:The adsorption of Congo red (CR), an azo dye, from aqueous solution using free and immobilized agricultural waste biomass of Nelumbo nucifera (lotus) has been studied separately in a continuous fixed-bed column operation. The N. nucifera leaf powder adsorbent was immobilized in various polymeric matrices and the maximum decolorization efficiency (83.64%) of CR occurred using the polymeric matrix sodium silicate. The maximum efficacy (72.87%) of CR dye desorption was obtained using the solvent methanol. Reusability studies of free and immobilized adsorbents for the decolorization of CR dye were carried out separately in three runs in continuous mode. The % color removal and equilibrium dye uptake of the regenerated free and immobilized adsorbents decreased significantly after the first cycle. The decolorization efficiencies of CR dye adsorption were 53.66% and 43.33%; equilibrium dye uptakes were 1.179 mg g-1 and 0.783 mg g-1 in the third run of operation with free and immobilized adsorbent, respectively. The column experimental data fit very well to the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models for the free and immobilized adsorbent with coefficients of correlation R2 ≥ 0.976 in various runs. The study concludes that free and immobilized N. nucifera can be efficiently used for the removal of CR from synthetic and industrial wastewater in a continuous flow mode. It makes a substantial contribution to the development of new biomass materials for monitoring and remediation of toxic dye-contaminated water resources.

Project description:Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis and granulomatous amoebic encephalitis are distressing infections of the central nervous system caused by brain-eating amoebae, namely, Naegleria fowleri and Acanthamoeba spp., respectively, and present mortality rates of over 90%. No single drug has been approved for use against these infections, and current therapy is met with an array of obstacles including high toxicity and limited specificity. Thus, the development of alternative effective chemotherapeutic agents for the management of infections due to brain-eating amoebae is a crucial requirement to avert future mortalities. In this paper, we synthesized a conducting polymer-based nanocomposite entailing polyaniline (PANI) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and explored its anti-trophozoite and anti-cyst potentials against Acanthamoeba castellanii and Naegleria fowleri. The intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and ultrastructural appearances of amoeba were also evaluated with treatment. Throughout, treatment with the 1:2 and 1:5 ratios of PANI/MoS2 at 100 μg/mL demonstrated significant anti-amoebic effects toward A. castellanii as well as N. fowleri, appraised to be ROS mediated and effectuate physical alterations to amoeba morphology. Further, cytocompatibility toward human keratinocyte skin cells (HaCaT) and primary human corneal epithelial cells (pHCEC) was noted. For the first time, polymer-based nanocomposites such as PANI/MoS2 are reported in this study as appealing options in the drug discovery for brain-eating amoebae infections.

Project description:BackgroundMelanin is detectable in various sense organs including the skin in animals. It has been reported that melanin adsorbs toxic elements such as mercury, cadmium, and lead. In this study, we investigated the adsorption of molybdenum, which is widely recognized as a toxic element, by melanin.MethodsMolybdenum level of the mouse skin was measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The pigmentation level of murine skin was digitalized as the L* value by using a reflectance spectrophotometer. An in vitro adsorption assay was performed to confirm the interaction between molybdenum and melanin.ResultsOur analysis of hairless mice with different levels of skin pigmentation showed that the level of molybdenum increased with an increase in the level of skin pigmentation (L* value). Moreover, our analysis by Spearman's correlation coefficient test showed a strong correlation (r = - 0.9441, p < 0.0001) between L* value and molybdenum level. Our cell-free experiment using the Langmuir isotherm provided evidence for the adsorption of molybdenum by melanin. The maximum adsorption capacity of 1 mg of synthetic melanin for molybdenum was 131 μg in theory.ConclusionOur in vivo and in vitro results showed a new aspect of melanin as an adsorbent of molybdenum.

Project description:In the present study, a novel method has been carried out to grow tungsten (W) doped molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) on the graphene transferred TEM grid in a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) setup. Tungsten trioxide (WO3) has been used as a source for 'W' while 'Mo' has been derived from Mo based substrate. Different experimental parameters were used in this experiment. Higher gas flow rate decreases the size of the sample flake and on other side increases the dopant concentrations. The interaction mechanism between Mo, S, W and oxygen (O) have been explored. The influence of oxygen seems to be not avoidable completely which also imposes effective growth condition for the reaction of Mo with incoming sulfur atoms. The difference in the migration energies of Mo, WO3, S clusters on the graphene and the higher reactivity of Mo clusters over other possibly formed atomic clusters on the graphene leads to the growth of W doped MoS2 monolayers. Formation of MoS2 monolayer and the nature of edge doping of 'W' is explained well with the crystal model using underlying nucleation principles. We believe our result provide a special route to prepare W doped MoS2 on graphene substrate in the future.

Project description:Dye effluent causes serious pollution and damage to the environment and needs a series of treatments before it can be discharged. Among the numerous effluent treatment methods, adsorption is the simplest and does not cause secondary pollution. Bio-adsorbents are especially advantageous in the treatment of low-concentration dye effluent. In this study, the adsorption and removal capacities of unmodified α- and β-chitosan and modified β-chitosan (β-chitosan cross-linked with triethylenetetramine, BCCT) on C.I. Reactive Blue 221 (RB221) dye were compared. The experiments were performed on the adsorption of the RB221 dye by unmodified α- and β-chitosan and cross-linkage⁻modified BCCT at different temperatures and for different durations, which are presented along with the relevant adsorption kinetics calculations. According to the results, as the temperature increased from 303 to 333 K, the initial adsorption rates of the adsorbents, α-chitosan, β-chitosan, and BCCT, for the RB221 dye, changed from 1.01 × 10², 4.74 × 10², and 1.48 × 10⁶ mg/g min to 5.98 × 10⁴, 4.23 × 10⁸, and 1.52 × 1013 mg/g min, respectively. BCCT thus showed the best adsorption for the dye at all temperatures from the Elovich model. These results confirmed the successful introduction of a polyaminated and cross-linked extended structure as a modification for the BCCT adsorbent, which makes it resistant to acid hydrolysis and gives it the functional amine group for dye adsorption, thereby promoting the ability of BCCT to adsorb dyes under strongly acidic conditions. The compound synthesized in this study is expected to be a good choice in the future for purifying strongly acidic effluent containing anionic organic dyes.

Project description:The strong light emission and absorption exhibited by single atomic layer transitional metal dichalcogenides in the visible to near-infrared wavelength range make them attractive for optoelectronic applications. In this work, using two-pulse photovoltage correlation technique, we show that monolayer molybdenum disulfide photodetector can have intrinsic response times as short as 3?ps implying photodetection bandwidths as wide as 300?GHz. The fast photodetector response is a result of the short electron-hole and exciton lifetimes in this material. Recombination of photoexcited carriers in most two-dimensional metal dichalcogenides is dominated by nonradiative processes, most notable among which is Auger scattering. The fast response time, and the ease of fabrication of these devices, make them interesting for low-cost ultrafast optical communication links.
