Project description:A honeycomb-like 3D N/S co-doped porous carbon-coated cobalt sulfide (CoS, Co9S8, and Co1-x S) composite (CS@PC) is successfully prepared using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as the nitrogen-containing carbon source through a facile solvothermal method and subsequent in situ conversion. As an anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the CS@PC composite exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, including high reversible capacity, good rate capability, and cyclic stability. The composite electrode delivers specific capacities of 781.2 and 466.0 mAh g-1 at 0.1 and 5 A g-1, respectively. When cycled at a current density of 1 A g-1, it displays a high reversible capacity of 717.0 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles. The ability to provide this level of performance is attributed to the unique 3D multi-level porous architecture with large electrode-electrolyte contact area, bicontinuous electron/ion transport pathways, and attractive structure stability. Such micro-/nanoscale design and engineering strategies may also be used to explore other nanocomposites to boost their energy storage performance.

Project description:We present a feasible method for the preparation of one-dimensional N-doping carbon nanofibers encapsulated NaTi2(PO4)3 (NTP-NCNFs) through electrospinning accompanied by calcination. The poor electrical conductivity of NTP is significantly improved and the as-prepared NTP-NCNFs exhibit stable and ultrafast sodium-storage capability. The NTP-NCNFs maintains a stable specific capacity of 121 mAh g-1 at 10 C after 2,000 cycles, which only drop to 105 mAh g-1 after 20,000 cycles. Furthermore, the NTP-NCNFs show excellent rate performance from 0.2 to 20 C, whose recovery efficiency still reaches 99.43%. The superior electrochemical property is mainly attributed to the large specific surface area, high porosity, N-doping carbon coating, and one-dimensional structure of NTP-NCNFs.

Project description:Transition metal carbides have been studied extensively as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but they suffer from sluggish lithium reaction kinetics and large volume expansion. Herein, a hierarchical Mo2C/C nanosheet composite has been synthesized through a rational pyrolysis strategy, and evaluated as an anode material with enhanced lithium storage properties for LIBs. In the hierarchical Mo2C/C nanosheet composite, large numbers of Mo2C nanosheets with a thickness of 40-100 nm are uniformly anchored onto/into carbon nanosheet matrices. This unique hierarchical architecture can provide favorable ion and electron transport pathways and alleviate the volume change of Mo2C during cycling. As a consequence, the hierarchical Mo2C/C nanosheet composite exhibits high-performance lithium storage with a reversible capacity of up to 868.6 mA h g-1 after 300 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A g-1, as well as a high rate capacity of 541.8 mA h g-1 even at 5.0 A g-1. More importantly, this hierarchical composite demonstrates impressive cyclability with a capacity retention efficiency of 122.1% over 5000 successive cycles at 5.0 A g-1, which surpasses the cycling properties of most other Mo2C-based materials reported to date.

Project description:Lithium-sulfur batteries have emerged as one of the promising next-generation energy storage devices. However, the dissolution and shuttling of polysulfides in the electrolyte leads to a rapid decrease in capacity, severe self-discharge, and poor high-temperature performance. Here, we demonstrate the design and preparation of a Mo2C nanoparticle-embedded carbon nanosheet matrix material (Mo2C/C) and its application in lithium-sulfur battery separator modification. As a polar catalyst, Mo2C/C can effectively adsorb and promote the reversible conversion of lithium polysulfides, suppress the shuttle effect, and improve the electrochemical performance of the battery. The lithium-sulfur battery with the Mo2C/C =-modified separator showed a good rate of performance with high specific capacities of 1470 and 799 mAh g-1 at 0.1 and 2 C, respectively. In addition, the long-cycle performance of only 0.09% decay per cycle for 400 cycles and the stable cycling under high sulfur loading indicate that the Mo2C/C-modified separator holds great promise for the development of high-energy-density lithium-sulfur batteries.

Project description:Owing to their high specific capacity and abundant reserve, Cux S compounds are promising electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Carbon compositing could stabilize the Cux S structure and repress capacity fading during the electrochemical cycling, but the corresponding Li+ storage mechanism and stabilization effect should be further clarified. In this study, nanoscale Cu2 S was synthesized by CuS co-precipitation and thermal reduction with polyelectrolytes. High-temperature synchrotron radiation diffraction was used to monitor the thermal reduction process. During the first cycle, the conversion mechanism upon lithium storage in the Cu2 S/carbon was elucidated by operando synchrotron radiation diffraction and in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The N-doped carbon-composited Cu2 S (Cu2 S/C) exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 425 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 , with a higher, long-term capacity of 523 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 200 cycles; in contrast, the bare CuS electrode exhibits 123 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles. Multiple-scan cyclic voltammetry proves that extra Li+ storage can mainly be ascribed to the contribution of the capacitive storage.

Project description:ZnS has great potentials as an anode for lithium storage because of its high theoretical capacity and resource abundance; however, the large volume expansion accompanied with structural collapse and low conductivity of ZnS cause severe capacity fading and inferior rate capability during lithium storage. Herein, 0D-2D ZnS nanodots/Ti3C2Tx MXene hybrids are prepared by anchoring ZnS nanodots on Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets through coordination modulation between MXene and MOF precursor (ZIF-8) followed with sulfidation. The MXene substrate coupled with the ZnS nanodots can synergistically accommodate volume variation of ZnS over charge-discharge to realize stable cyclability. As revealed by XPS characterizations and DFT calculations, the strong interfacial interaction between ZnS nanodots and MXene nanosheets can boost fast electron/lithium-ion transfer to achieve excellent electrochemical activity and kinetics for lithium storage. Thereby, the as-prepared ZnS nanodots/MXene hybrid exhibits a high capacity of 726.8 mAh g-1 at 30 mA g-1, superior cyclic stability (462.8 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g-1), and excellent rate performance. The present results provide new insights into the understanding of the lithium storage mechanism of ZnS and the revealing of the effects of interfacial interaction on lithium storage performance enhancement.

Project description:Heterostructured materials show great potential to enhance the specific capacity, rate performance and cycling lifespan of lithium-ion batteries owing to their unique interfaces, robust architectures, and synergistic effects. Herein, a polypyrrole (PPy)-coated nanotube-like Mo3S4/CoMo2S4 heterostructure is prepared by the hydrothermal and subsequent in situ polymerization methods. The well-designed nanotube-like structure is beneficial to relieve the serious volume changes and facilitate the infiltration of electrolytes during the charge/discharge process. The Mo3S4/CoMo2S4 heterostructure could effectively enhance the electrical conductivity and Li+ transport kinetics owing to the refined energy band structure and the internal electric field at the heterostructure interface. Moreover, the conductive PPy-coated layer could inhibit the obvious volume expansion like a firm armor and further avoid the pulverization of the active material and aggregation of generated products. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of the well-designed heterostructure and PPy-coated nanotube-like architecture, the prepared Mo3S4/CoMo2S4 heterostructure delivers high reversible capacity (1251.3 mAh g-1 at 300 mA g-1), superior rate performance (340.3 mAh g-1 at 5.0 A g-1) and excellent cycling lifespan (744.1 mAh g-1 after 600 cycles at a current density of 2.0 A g-1). Such a design concept provides a promising strategy towards heterostructure materials to enhance their lithium storage performances and boost their practical applications.

Project description:Fe3C modified by the incorporation of carbon materials offers excellent electrical conductivity and interfacial lithium storage, making it attractive as an anode material in lithium-ion batteries. In this work, we describe a time- and energy-saving approach for the large-scale preparation of Fe3C nanoparticles embedded in mesoporous carbon nanosheets (Fe3C-NPs@MCNSs) by solution combustion synthesis and subsequent carbothermal reduction. Fe3C nanoparticles with a diameter of ∼5 nm were highly crystallized and compactly dispersed in mesoporous carbon nanosheets with a pore-size distribution of 3-5 nm. Fe3C-NPs@MCNSs exhibited remarkable high-rate lithium storage performance with discharge specific capacities of 731, 647, 481, 402 and 363 mA h g-1 at current densities of 0.1, 1, 2, 5 and 10 A g-1, respectively, and when the current density reduced back to 0.1 A g-1 after 45 cycles, the discharge specific capacity could perfectly recover to 737 mA h g-1 without any loss. The unique structure could promote electron and Li-ion transfer, create highly accessible multi-channel reaction sites and buffer volume variation for enhanced cycling and good high-rate lithium storage performance.

Project description:In this study, we report a Janus- or twins-type honeycomb 3D porous nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) nanosheet array encapsulating ultrafine CoP/Co2P nanorods supported on Ti foil (CoP/Co2P@NC/Ti) as a self-supported electrode for efficient hydrogen evolution. The synthesis and formation mechanism of 3D porous NC nanosheet array assembled into a honeycomb layer with ultrafine CoP/Co2P single-crystal nanorods encapsulated is systematically presented. The CoP/Co2P@NC/Ti electrode exhibits low overpotentials (η10) of 31, 49, and 64 mV at a current density of -10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1.0 KOH, and 1.0 M PBS, respectively, exceeding the overwhelming majority of the documented transition metal phosphide-based electrocatalysts. Density functional theory calculation reveals that the superior electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction could be ascribed to the strong coupling effects of the reactive facets of CoP and Co2P with the 3D porous NC nanosheet, making it exhibit a more thermo-neutral hydrogen adsorption free energy.

Project description:Optimizing interfacial contacts and thus electron transfer phenomena in heterogeneous electrocatalysts is an effective approach for enhancing electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we successfully synthesized ultrafine β-Mo2C nanoparticles confined within hollow capsules of nitrogen-doped porous carbon (β-Mo2C@NPCC) and found that the surface layer of molybdenum atoms was further oxidized to a single Mo-O surface layer, thus producing intimate O-Mo-C interfaces. An arsenal of complementary technologies, including XPS, atomic-resolution HAADF-STEM, and XAS analysis clearly reveals the existence of O-Mo-C interfaces for these surface-engineered ultrafine nanostructures. The β-Mo2C@NPCC electrocatalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water. Theoretical studies indicate that the highly accessible ultrathin O-Mo-C interfaces serving as the active sites are crucial to the HER performance and underpinned the outstanding electrocatalytic performance of β-Mo2C@NPCC. This proof-of-concept study opens a new avenue for the fabrication of highly efficient catalysts for HER and other applications, whilst further demonstrating the importance of exposed interfaces and interfacial contacts in efficient electrocatalysis.
