Project description:Computational methods, or computer-aided material design (CAMD), used for the analysis and design of materials have a relatively long history. However, the applicability of CAMD has been limited by the scales of computational resources generally available in the past. The surge in computational power seen in recent years is enabling the applicability of CAMD to unprecedented levels. Here, we focus on the CAMD for materials critical for the continued advancement of the complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) semiconductor technology. In particular, we apply CAMD to the engineering of high-permittivity dielectric materials. We developed a Reax forcefield that includes Si, O, Zr, and H. We used this forcefield in a series of simulations to compute the static dielectric constant of silica glasses for low Zr concentration using a classical molecular dynamics approach. Our results are compared against experimental values. Not only does our work reveal numerical estimations on ZrO2-doped silica dielectrics, it also provides a foundation and demonstration of how CAMD can enable the engineering of materials of critical importance for advanced CMOS technology nodes.

Project description:Electric double-layer capacitors are efficient energy storage devices that have the potential to account for uneven power demand in sustainable energy systems. Earlier attempts to improve an unsatisfactory capacitance of electric double-layer capacitors have focused on meso- or nanostructuring to increase the accessible surface area and minimize the distance between the adsorbed ions and the electrode. However, the dielectric constant of the electrolyte solvent embedded between adsorbed ions and the electrode surface, which also governs the capacitance, has not been previously exploited to manipulate the capacitance. Here we show that the capacitance of electric double-layer capacitor electrodes can be enlarged when the water molecules are strongly confined into the two-dimensional slits of titanium carbide MXene nanosheets. Using electrochemical methods and theoretical modeling, we find that dipolar polarization of strongly confined water resonantly overscreens an external electric field and enhances capacitance with a characteristically negative dielectric constant of a water molecule.

Project description:The interphase region widely exists in polymer-based nanocomposites, which affects the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites. General models, such as the Knott model, are often used to predict the dielectric constant of nanocomposites, while the model does not take the existence of interphase into account, which leads to a large deviation between the predicted results and the experimental values. In this study, a developed Knott model is proposed by introducing the interphase region and appropriately assuming the properties of the interphase. The modeling results based on the developed model are in good agreement with the experimental data, which verifies the high accuracy of the development model. The influence of nanoparticle loading on the effective volume fraction is further studied. In addition, the effects of the polymer matrix, nanoparticles, interphase dielectric and thickness, nanoparticle size and volume fraction on the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites are also investigated. The results show that polymer matrix or nanoparticles with a high dielectric and thick interphase can effectively improve the dielectric properties of the materials. Small size nanoparticles with high concentrations are more conducive to improving the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites. This study demonstrates that the interphase properties have an important impact on the dielectric properties of nanocomposites, and the developed model is helpful to accurately predict the dielectric constant of polymer-based nanocomposites.

Project description:Over the last few years, the variation in liquid chemistry due to the development of radicals generated by cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has played an important role in plasma medicine. CAP direct treatment or CAP activated media treatment in cancer cells shows promising anticancer activity for both in vivo and in vitro studies. However, the anticancer activity or antimicrobial activity varies between plasma devices due to the different abilities among plasma devices to generate the reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) at different ratios and in different concentrations. While the generation of RONS depends on many factors, the feeding gas plays the most important role among the factors. Hence, in this study we used different compositions of feeding gas while fixing all other plasma characteristics. We used Ar, Ar-O2 (at different ratios), and Ar-N2 (at different ratios) as the working gases for CAP and investigated the structural changes in proteins (Hemoglobin (Hb) and Myoglobin (Mb)). We then analyzed the influence of RONS generated in liquid on the conformations of proteins. Additionally, to determine the influence of H2O2 on the Hb and Mb structures, we used molecular dynamic simulation.

Project description:Low-temperature giant-dielectric-constant thin films (In0.0025Nb0.0025Ti0.995O2) fabricated with simple radio frequency (RF) sputtering on glass substrates are employed as the gate dielectrics for thin-film transistors (TFTs) for the first time. The 380 nm-thick In0.0025Nb0.0025Ti0.995O2 film exhibited a quasi-static capacitance of as high as 36 156 nF cm-2 with a quasi-static permittivity of 15 525 (and 7607 nF cm-2 at 1 kHz). Indium zinc oxide (IZO) TFTs with In0.0025Nb0.0025Ti0.995O2 gate dielectrics exhibited high output current at low operation voltage and little hysteresis in the transfer curves between forward and reverse sweeps. The subthreshold swing (SS) of the IZO TFTs is 0.068 V dec-1, very close to the lowest limit of the SS of the field-effect transistors (0.06 V dec-1). The results also proves that the lowest limit of the SS (0.06 V dec-1) cannot be broken no matter how high the gate dielectric capacitance is (except for negative capacitors). The TFTs demonstrate the potential for the applications in low-power circuits or flat-panel displays.

Project description:Implicit methods for modeling protein electrostatics require dielectric properties of the system to be known, in particular, the value of the dielectric constant of protein. While numerous values of the internal protein dielectric constant were reported in the literature, still there is no consensus of what the optimal value is. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the protein dielectric constant is not a "constant" but is a complex function reflecting the properties of the protein's structure and sequence. Here, we report an implementation of a Gaussian-based approach to deliver the dielectric constant distribution throughout the protein and surrounding water phase by utilizing the 3D structure of the corresponding macromolecule. In contrast to previous reports, we construct a smooth dielectric function throughout the space of the system to be modeled rather than just constructing a "Gaussian surface" or smoothing molecule-water boundary. Analysis on a large set of proteins shows that (a) the average dielectric constant inside the protein is relatively low, about 6-7, and reaches a value of about 20-30 at the protein's surface, and (b) high average local dielectric constant values are associated with charged residues while low dielectric constant values are automatically assigned to the regions occupied by hydrophobic residues. In terms of energetics, a benchmarking test was carried out against the experimental pKa's of 89 residues in staphylococcal nuclease (SNase) and showed that it results in a much better RMSD (= 1.77 pK) than the corresponding calculations done with a homogeneous high dielectric constant with an optimal value of 10 (RMSD = 2.43 pK).

Project description:We used time-resolved Förster resonance energy transfer, circular dichroism, and molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the structural dependence of synaptotagmin 1's intrinsically disordered region (IDR) on phosphorylation and dielectric constant. We found that a peptide corresponding to the full-length IDR sequence, a ?60-residue strong polyampholyte, can sample structurally collapsed states in aqueous solution, consistent with its ?-predicted behavior, where ? is a sequence-dependent parameter that is used to predict IDR compaction. In implicit solvent simulations of this same sequence, lowering the dielectric constant to more closely mimic the environment near a lipid bilayer surface promoted further sampling of collapsed structures. We then examined the structural tendencies of central region residues of the IDR in isolation. We found that the exocytosis-modulating phosphorylation of Thr112 disrupts a local disorder-to-order transition induced by trifluoroethanol/water mixtures that decrease the solution dielectric constant and stabilize helical structure. Implicit solvent simulations on these same central region residues testing the impact of dielectric constant alone converge on a similar result, showing that helical structure is formed with higher probability at a reduced dielectric. In these helical conformers, lysine-aspartic acid salt bridges contribute to stabilization of transient secondary structure. In contrast, phosphorylation results in formation of salt bridges unsuitable for helix formation. Collectively, these results suggest a model in which phosphorylation and compaction of the IDR sequence regulate structural transitions that in turn modulate neuronal exocytosis.

Project description:BackgroundTo report a case in which silicone oil accidentally entered Berger's space (BS) after vitrectomy and to explore the effective treatments and possible etiological mechanisms.Case presentationA 68-year-old male underwent vitrectomy and silicone oil injection for the treatment of retinal detachment (RD) in the right eye. Six months later, we noticed an unexpected lens-like round translucent substance located behind the posterior lens capsule and diagnosed it as BS filled by silicone oil. Subsequently, we conducted vitrectomy and the drainage of the silicone oil in BS in the second surgery. A 3-month follow-up showed significant anatomic recovery and visual recovery.ConclusionsOur case report presents a patient with silicone oil entering BS after vitrectomy and provides photographs of BS from a relatively unique perspective. Furthermore, we illustrate the surgical treatment procedure and reveal the possible etiology and prevention method of silicon oil entering BS, which will provide good insights for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Project description:PurposeTo present a 3T brain imaging study using a conformal prototype helmet constructed with an ultra-high dielectric constant (uHDC; εr ~ 1000) materials that can be inserted into standard receive head-coils.MethodsA helmet conformal to a standard human head constructed with uHDC materials was characterized through electromagnetic simulations and experimental work. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), transmit efficiency, and power deposition with the uHDC helmet inserted within a 20-channel head coil were measured in vivo and compared with a 64-channel head coil and the 20-channel coil without the helmet. Seven healthy volunteers were analyzed.ResultsSimulation and in vivo experimental results showed that transmit efficiency was improved by nearly 3 times within localized regions for a quadrature excitation, with a measured global increase of 58.21 ± 6.54% over 7 volunteers. The use of a parallel transmit spokes pulse compensated for severe degradation of B1+ homogeneity, at the expense of higher global and local specific absorption rate levels. A SNR histogram analysis with statistical testing demonstrated that the uHDC helmet enhanced a 20-channel head coil to the level of the 64-channel head coil, with the improvements mainly within the cortical brain regions.ConclusionA prototype uHDC helmet enhanced the SNR of a standard head coil to the level of a high density 64-channel coil, although transmit homogeneity was compromised. Further improvements in SNR may be achievable with optimization of this technology, and could be a low-cost approach for future radiofrequency engineering work in the brain at 3T.
