General, Metal-free Synthesis of Carbon Nanofiber Assemblies from Plant Oils.

ABSTRACT: We designed a metal-free synthesis of carbon nanofiber based on ketene chemistry using phosphorus pentoxide (P₂ O₅ ) and vegetable oil. Based on the characterization of intermediates, P₂ O₅ -oil reaction yielded most possibly alkylketenes, which polymerized into poly(ketene) with abundant enol groups. The enol groups further reacted with P₂ O₅ , forcing the poly(ketene) to assemble into a nano-sized preassembly structure. Moderate heating transforms these structures into carbonaceaus nanofibers. This approach is applicable to other chemicals with similar structure to vegetable oil. The carbon nanofibers with P-O-C functionalization show relatively high graphitization degree and promising textural properties. The C-O-P environment accounts for 66 at % of the total P and creates a superior thermal stability. As a model application, a CDI system built of a carbon-nanofiber-based electrode countered by an activated carbon-based electrode exhibited exceptional performance.

Project description:We report a general strategy for synthesis of a large variety of metal oxide nanoparticles on different carbon nanomaterials (CNMs), including single-walled carbon nanotubes, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and a few-layer graphene. The approach was based on the π-π interaction between CNMs and modified aromatic organic ligands, which acted as bridges connecting metal ions and CNMs. Our methods can be applicable for a large variety of metal ions, thus offering a great potential application.

A general metal-free approach for the stereoselective synthesis of C-glycals from unactivated alkynes.

Project description:A novel metal-free strategy for a rapid and α-selctive C-alkynylation of glycals was developed. The reaction utilizes TMSOTf as a promoter to generate in situ trimethylsilylacetylene for C-alkynylation. Thanks to this methodology, we can access C-glycosides in a single step from a variety of acetylenes , i.e., arylacetylenes and most importantly aliphatic alkynes.

Copper-surface-mediated synthesis of acetylenic carbon-rich nanofibers for active metal-free photocathodes.

Project description:The engineering of acetylenic carbon-rich nanostructures has great potential in many applications, such as nanoelectronics, chemical sensors, energy storage, and conversion, etc. Here we show the synthesis of acetylenic carbon-rich nanofibers via copper-surface-mediated Glaser polycondensation of 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene on a variety of conducting (e.g., copper, graphite, fluorine-doped tin oxide, and titanium) and non-conducting (e.g., Kapton, glass, and silicon dioxide) substrates. The obtained nanofibers (with optical bandgap of 2.51 eV) exhibit photocatalytic activity in photoelectrochemical cells, yielding saturated cathodic photocurrent of ca. 10 µA cm-2 (0.3-0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode). By incorporating thieno[3,2-b]thiophene units into the nanofibers, a redshift (ca. 100 nm) of light absorption edge and twofold of the photocurrent are achieved, rivalling those of state-of-the-art metal-free photocathodes (e.g., graphitic carbon nitride of 0.1-1 µA cm-2). This work highlights the promise of utilizing acetylenic carbon-rich materials as efficient and sustainable photocathodes for water reduction.

"Metal-Free" Fluorescent Supramolecular Assemblies for Distinct Detection of Organophosphate/Organochlorine Pesticides.

Project description:The "metal-free", easy-to-prepare fluorescent supramolecular assemblies based on anthracene/perylene bisamide (PBI) derivatives have been developed for the distinct detection of organophosphate (CPF) and organochlorine (DCN) pesticides in aqueous media. The supramolecular assemblies of anthracene derivative show rapid and highly selective "on-on" response toward organophosphate (CPF), which is attributed to the formation of CPF-induced formation of "closely packed" assemblies. A detection limit in the nanomolar range is observed for CPF. On the other hand, the inner filter effect is proposed as the mechanism for the "on-off" detection of DCN using supramolecular assemblies of the anthracene derivative. This is the first report on the development of fluorescent materials having the potential to differentiate between organophosphate and organochlorine pesticides. The assemblies of anthracene derivative 2 also act as "enzyme mimic" as organophosphate pesticide show a preferential affinity for assemblies of derivative 2 over acetylcholinesterase enzyme. Further, the real-time applications of supramolecular assemblies have also been explored for the detection of CPF and DCN in spiked water and in agricultural products such as grapes and apples.

Label-free detection of C-reactive protein using a carbon nanofiber based biosensor.

Project description:We report the sensitive detection of C-reactive protein (CRP), a biomarker for cardiac disease, using a carbon nanofiber based biosensor platform. Vertically aligned carbon nanofibers were grown using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition to fabricate nanoelectrode arrays in a 3×3 configuration. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used for the CRP detection. The CV responses show a 25% reduction in redox current upon the immobilization of anti-CRP on the electrode where as a 30% increase in charge transfer resistance is seen from EIS. Further reduction in redox current and increase in charge transfer resistance result from binding of CRP on anti-CRP immobilized surface, proportional to the concentration of the CRP target. The detection limit of the sensor is found to be ~90 pM or ~11 ng/ml, which is in the clinically relevant range. Control tests using non-specific myoglobin antigen confirmed the specificity of the present approach.

Synthesis of mesoporous ceria using metal- and halogen-free ordered mesoporous carbon as a hard template.

Project description:Ordered mesoporous cerias were synthesised by employing metal- and halogen-free ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) as the hard templates in a 'nanocasting' procedure. TEM, small angle (SA) and wide angle (WA) XRD, and N2 physisorption analyses were used to characterise the templates, intermediates and ceria products and electron tomography (STEM-HAADF) was used to explore the 3D morphology of the ceria nanostructures grown within the carbon templates. This allowed the relationships between the structures of the OMC templates and the products to be considered in detail as two parameters were varied. These were: the method of impregnation of the ceria precursor; and the temperature of calcination of the OMC template. Of the four impregnation methods tested, the solid-liquid method was found to be the most successful. This gave a high quality product with the highest yield of uniform mesopores, and crystalline nanorods of ceria arrayed in clear long-range order, as viewed by TEM and determined in SA and WAXRD. The specific surface area and pore volume exhibited by this sample were 111 m2 g-1 and 0.39 cm3 g-1, respectively. 3D electron tomography reconstructions revealed the presence of a network of ordered, nanoscale, rod-like structures interlinked in a complex fashion. The effect of calcination temperature of the template on uptake of the ceria precursor during impregnation was studied by calcining OMCs at temperatures from 350 to 800 °C and using these as hard templates for the nanocasting of ceria. Of these, the carbon template calcined at 400 °C gave the highest quality product.

Synthesis of Vitamin B3 through a Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Approach Using Metal-Free Carbon Nitride-Based Catalysts.

Project description:Vitamin B3 (nicotinic acid, VB3) was synthesized through the photocatalytic oxidation of 3-pyridinemethanol (3PM) under visible-light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation using metal-free graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) - based materials. A bulk (GCN) material was prepared by a simple thermal treatment using dicyandiamide as the precursor. A post-thermal treatment under static air and nitrogen flow was employed to obtain the GCN-T and GCN-T-N materials, respectively. The conditions adopted during the post-treatment revealed differences in the resulting materials' morphological, electronic, and optical properties. The post-treated photocatalysts revealed an enhanced efficiency in the oxidation of 3PM into VB3, with the GCN-T-N photocatalyst being the best-performing material. The defective surface, reduced crystallinity, and superior photoabsorption of GCN-T-N account for this material's improved performance in the production of VB3. Nevertheless, the presence of nitrogen vacancies in the carbon nitride structure and, consequently, the creation of mid-gap states also accounts to its highly oxidative ability. The immobilization of GCN-T-N in sodium alginate hydrogel was revealed as a promising strategy to produce VB3, avoiding the need for the photocatalyst separation step. Concerning the mechanism of synthesis of VB3 through the photocatalytic oxidation of 3PM, it was possible to identify the presence of 3-pyridinecarboxaldehyde (3PC) as the intermediary product.

Metal-free formal synthesis of phenoxazine.

Project description:A transition metal-free formal synthesis of phenoxazine is presented. The key step of the sequence is a high-yielding O-arylation of a phenol with an unsymmetrical diaryliodonium salt to provide an ortho-disubstituted diaryl ether. This species was cyclized to acetylphenoxazine in moderate yield. The overall yield in the three-step sequence is 72% based on recovered diaryl ether. An interesting, unusually stable iodine(III) intermediate in the O-arylation was observed by NMR and could be converted to the product upon longer reaction time.

Transition-metal free umpolung carbon-nitrogen vs. carbon-chlorine bond formation.

Project description:The formation of carbon-nitrogen (C-N) bonds via an umpolung substitution reaction has been achieved at -78 °C without the need for catalysts, ligands, or additives. The scope is limited to aryl Grignard reagents with N-chloroamines. The findings in this manuscript serve as a reference point for all C-N bond formation involving N-chloroamines and organometallic reagents. Knowing the yields of uncatalyzed reactions will be useful when determining the success of future catalytic methods.

Nanodisc-to-Nanofiber Transition of Noncovalent Peptide-Phospholipid Assemblies.

Project description:We report a novel molecular architecture of peptide-phospholipid coassemblies. The amphiphilic peptide Ac-18A-NH2 (18A), which was designed to mimic apolipoprotein α-helices, has been shown to form nanodisc structures with phospholipid bilayers. We show that an 18A peptide cysteine substitution at residue 11, 18A[A11C], forms fibrous assemblies with 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-phosphatidylcholine at a lipid-to-peptide (L/P) molar ratio of 1, a fiber diameter of 10-20 nm, and a length of more than 1 μm. Furthermore, 18A[A11C] can form nanodiscs with these lipid bilayers at L/P ratios of 4-6. The peptide adopts α-helical structures in both the nanodisc and nanofiber assemblies, although the α-helical bundle structures were evident only in the nanofibers, and the phospholipids of the nanofibers were not lamellar. Fluorescence spectroscopic analysis revealed that the peptide and lipid molecules in the nanofibers exhibited different solvent accessibility and hydrophobicity from those of the nanodiscs. Furthermore, the cysteine substitution at residue 11 did not result in disulfide bond formation, although it was responsible for the nanofiber formation, suggesting that this free sulfhydryl group has an important functional role. Alternatively, the disulfide dimer of 18A[A11C] preferentially formed nanodiscs, even at an L/P ratio of 1. Interconversions of these discoidal and fibrous assemblies were induced by the stepwise addition of free 18A[A11C] or liposomes into the solution. Furthermore, these structural transitions could also be induced by the introduction of oxidative and reductive stresses to the assemblies. Our results demonstrate that heteromolecular lipid-peptide complexes represent a novel approach to the construction of controllable and functional nanoscale assemblies.
