Data on the hydrodynamics and power consumption induced by modified anchor impellers in cylindrical tanks.

ABSTRACT: In the present paper, the data assembled concerning the stirring of a viscous Newtonian fluid in cylindrical and unbaffled tanks is disclosed. The stirring is ensured by close-clearance impellers rotating at low speeds. This is a comparative study between three modified geometries of anchor impellers aiming to enhance the fluid circulation in the whole vessel volume, and especially at the lower part of the vessel. The suggested geometrical configurations aim also to keep the energy consumption at its minimum. The data summarized here provides an additional knowledge for the best selection of stirrers for a specified industrial application.

Homogeneous microwave near-field power focusing using a cylindrical antenna array.

Project description:This paper presents an investigation of a microwave near-field power focusing (NFPF) analytical approach utilizing a cylindrical array of electric line sources along the z-axis, applicable to any arbitrary homogeneous linear medium. A novel parameter, termed the "focus ability" (FA), is introduced to quantitatively assess a method's capabilities in achieving power focusing. In the following, the phases and amplitudes of the excitation signals of the array elements are obtained with optimization to maximize FA over a certain studied area. Each stage of the theoretical analysis is supported through COMSOL full-wave simulations, ensuring the validity of the results. Theoretical results relevant to focused power are then compared to outcomes obtained from CST full-wave simulations with the same array configuration while employing half-wave dipole antenna elements with excitations obtained via optimization. These comparisons indicate that the excitation signals obtained by theoretical analysis can be used for power focusing when the array of half-wave dipole antenna sources is utilized. Furthermore, the proposed method leads to a significant reduction in the optimization time. Also, in the provided examples, the FA parameter and NFPF are investigated for the different conditions consisting of the type of the homogeneous medium and the number of antennas.

A data set for electric power consumption forecasting based on socio-demographic features: Data from an area of southern Colombia.

Project description:In this article, we introduce a data set concerning electric-power consumption-related features registered in seven main municipalities of Nariño, Colombia, from December 2010 to May 2016. The data set consists of 4427 socio-demographic characteristics, and 7 power-consumption-referred measured values. Data were fully collected by the company Centrales Eléctricas de Nariño (CEDENAR) according to the client consumption records. Power consumption data collection was carried following a manual procedure wherein company workers are in charge of manually registering the readings (measured in kWh) reported by the electric energy meters installed at each housing/building. Released data set is aimed at providing researchers a suitable input for designing and assessing the performance of forecasting, modelling, simulation and optimization approaches applied to electric power consumption prediction and characterization problems. The data set, so-named in shorthand PCSTCOL, is freely and publicly available at https://doi.org/10.17632/xbt7scz5ny.3.

Hydrodynamics control shear-induced pattern formation in attractive suspensions.

Project description:Dilute suspensions of repulsive particles exhibit a Newtonian response to flow that can be accurately predicted by the particle volume fraction and the viscosity of the suspending fluid. However, such a description fails when the particles are weakly attractive. In a simple shear flow, suspensions of attractive particles exhibit complex, anisotropic microstructures and flow instabilities that are poorly understood and plague industrial processes. One such phenomenon, the formation of log-rolling flocs, which is ubiquitously observed in suspensions of attractive particles that are sheared while confined between parallel plates, is an exemplar of this phenomenology. Combining experiments and discrete element simulations, we demonstrate that this shear-induced structuring is driven by hydrodynamic coupling between the flocs and the confining boundaries. Clusters of particles trigger the formation of viscous eddies that are spaced periodically and whose centers act as stable regions where particles aggregate to form flocs spanning the vorticity direction. Simulation results for the wavelength of the periodic pattern of stripes formed by the logs and for the log diameter are in quantitative agreement with experimental observations on both colloidal and noncolloidal suspensions. Numerical and experimental results are successfully combined by means of rescaling in terms of a Mason number that describes the strength of the shear flow relative to the rupture force between contacting particles in the flocs. The introduction of this dimensionless group leads to a universal stability diagram for the log-rolling structures and allows for application of shear-induced structuring as a tool for assembling and patterning suspensions of attractive particles.

From cockroaches to tanks: The same power-mass-speed relation describes both biological and artificial ground-mobile systems.

Project description:This paper explores whether artificial ground-mobile systems exhibit a consistent regularity of relation among mass, power, and speed, similar to that which exists for biological organisms. To this end, we investigate an empirical allometric formula proposed in the 1980s for estimating the mechanical power expended by an organism of a given mass to move at a given speed, applicable over several orders of magnitude of mass, for a broad range of species, to determine if a comparable regularity applies to a range of vehicles. We show empirically that not only does a similar regularity apply to a wide variety of mobile systems; moreover, the formula is essentially the same, describing organisms and systems ranging from a roach (1 g) to a battle tank (35,000 kg). We also show that for very heavy vehicles (35,000-100,000,000 kg), the formula takes a qualitatively different form. These findings point to a fundamental similarity between biological and artificial locomotion that transcends great differences in morphology, mechanisms, materials, and behaviors. To illustrate the utility of this allometric relation, we investigate the significant extent to which ground robotic systems exhibit a higher cost of transport than either organisms or conventional vehicles, and discuss ways to overcome inefficiencies.

Detection of Potentially Compromised Computer Nodes and Clusters Connected on a Smart Grid, Using Power Consumption Data.

Project description:Monitoring what application or type of applications running on a computer or a cluster without violating the privacy of the users can be challenging, especially when we may not have operator access to these devices, or specialized software. Smart grids and Internet of things (IoT) devices can provide power consumption data of connected individual devices or groups. This research will attempt to provide insides on what applications are running based on the power consumption of the machines and clusters. It is therefore assumed that there is a correlation between electric power and what software application is running. Additionally, it is believed that it is possible to create power consumption profiles for various software applications and even normal and abnormal behavior (e.g., a virus). In order to achieve this, an experiment was organized for the purpose of collecting 48 h of continuous real power consumption data from two PCs that were part of a university computer lab. That included collecting data with a one-second sample period, during class as well as idle time from each machine and their cluster. During the second half of the recording period, one of the machines was infected with a custom-made virus, allowing comparison between power consumption data before and after infection. The data were analyzed using different approaches: descriptive analysis, F-Test of two samples of variance, two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA). The results show that it is possible to detect what type of application is running and if an individual machine or its cluster are infected. Additionally, we can conclude if the lab is used or not, making this research an ideal management tool for administrators.

Influence of Hydrodynamics and Hematocrit on Ultrasound-Induced Blood Plasmapheresis.

Project description:Acoustophoretic blood plasma separation is based on cell enrichment processes driven by acoustic radiation forces. The combined influence of hematocrit and hydrodynamics has not yet been quantified in the literature for these processes acoustically induced on blood. In this paper, we present an experimental study of blood samples exposed to ultrasonic standing waves at different hematocrit percentages and hydrodynamic conditions, in order to enlighten their individual influence on the acoustic response of the samples. The experiments were performed in a glass capillary (700 µm-square cross section) actuated by a piezoelectric ceramic at a frequency of 1.153 MHz, hosting 2D orthogonal half-wavelength resonances transverse to the channel length, with a single-pressure-node along its central axis. Different hematocrit percentages Hct = 2.25%, 4.50%, 9.00%, and 22.50%, were tested at eight flow rate conditions of Q = 0:80 µL/min. Cells were collected along the central axis driven by the acoustic radiation force, releasing plasma progressively free of cells. The study shows an optimal performance in a flow rate interval between 20 and 80 µL/min for low hematocrit percentages Hct ≤ 9.0%, which required very short times close to 10 s to achieve cell-free plasma in percentages over 90%. This study opens new lines for low-cost personalized blood diagnosis.

Efficient strategies to reduce power consumption in MANETs.

Project description:In current circumstances, where amelioration in technology is elevating, power optimization is of grave concern, whilst perceiving portable conditions. The focus is to design an efficient system with an aim to reduce power consumption and improve performance of other metrics. Heterogeneous wireless systems will command in the next-generation wireless networks with the aggregation of different remote access mechanisms. A node in MANET (Mobile Adhoc NETworks) while consuming significant amount of energy practices data transmission and data retrieval process whilst bonding with other neighboring nodes that are within its range. The proposed work implements User Specified energy model and DYMO (DYnamic Manet On-demand) routing protocol. Further, additional features of IEEE 802.11 i.e., Power Saving Mode is employed. To obtain enhanced coverage at targeted areas, multi-hop relay strategy is taken into account, also to achieve a less power consuming network with a greater service life. Consequently, the efficiency of the devices is monitored by opting Residual Life Accurate battery model, by using different datasets of Duracell AA and AAA batteries. Simultaneously, battery model, energy model and DYMO (DYnamic Manet On-demand) are applied for IEEE 802.16 to get a comparative assessment of power consumption between IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.16. Results are generated for both the architectures i.e., 802.11 and 802.16 for metrics such as residual amount of energy for varying simulation time for all the nodes and for energy consumption in AODV (Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector) and DYMO (DYnamic Manet On-demand) routing protocol using Qualnet version 7.4.

Monitoring of a micro-smart grid: Power consumption data of some machineries of an agro-industrial test site.

Project description:For the management of a (micro)-smart grid it is important to know the patters of the load profiles and of the generators. In this article the power consumption data obtained through a monitoring activity developed on a micro-smart grid in an agro-industrial test-site are presented. In particular, this reports the synthesis of the monitoring results of 5 loads (5 industrial machineries for crop micronization, corncob crashing and other similar processes). How these data were used within a monitoring and managing scheme of a micro-smart grid can be found in (E. Fabrizio, V. Branciforti, A. Costantino, M. Filippi, S. Barbero, G. Tecco, P. Mollo, A. Molino, 2017) [1]. The data can be useful for other researchers in order to create benchmarks of energy use input appropriate energy demand values in optimization tools for the industrial sector.
