The complete mitochondrial genome of Tetramorium tsushimae (Emery, 1925) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

ABSTRACT: Tetramorium tsushimae (Emery, 1925) is an omnivorous ant species native to East Asia and has been introduced to North America. The mitochondrial genome of T. tsushimae is 19,207 bp in length with an A + T content of 81.3% and includes 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNAs, and a control region. This sequence data would play an important role in the investigation of mitochondrial evolution of the subfamily Myrmicinae.

Complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Tapinoma melanocephalum (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Project description:Tapinoma melanocephalum is a ubiquitous invasive species and widely distributed in subtropical and tropical regions around the world. Here, we sequenced and annotated the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of T. melanocephalum. This mitogenome was 15,499 bp long and encoded 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and 2 ribosomal RNA unit genes (rRNAs). Compared to other Formicidae species, gene order of T. melanocephalum was not conserved and one tRNA cluster trnW-trnC-trnY converted to trnW-trnY-trnC. The whole mitogenome exhibited heavy AT nucleotide bias (79.5%). All PCGs started with the standard ATN codons. Except for cox1 and nad5 end with the incomplete codon T-, all PCGs terminated with the stop codon TAA. Phylogenetic analysis showed that T. melanocephalum got together with three same subfamily Dolichoderinae species and one Dorylinae species, indicating the close relationship of Dolichoderinae and Dorylinae.

Project description:Aphaenogaster famelica (Smith, 1874) is a slender ant found in Korea. We have completed the mitochondrial genome of A. famelica of which length is 19,464 bp, the third longest ant mitogenome so far. It was AT-biased (GC ratio is 18.0%) and includes 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and a control region. The extra bases of A. famelica are placed in intergenic regions each between trnV-trnM and trnI-trnQ. Gene order of A. famelica is identical to other Myrmicinae ants. Phylogenetic trees show that tribe Stenammini and tribe Myrmicini are closely related.

We have completed mitochondrial genome of N. flavipes of which length is 16,687 bp including 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNAs, and a control region. The base composition was AT-biased (GC ratio is 18.9%). Gene order of N. flavipes presents a unique inversion of trnP in comparison to Camponotus species. Our phylogenetic trees together with phylogenomic analysis suggest that the gene order rearrangements occurred independently in Camponotus and N. flavipes.

Project description:Ochetellus glaber (Mayr, 1867) is a dolichoderine ant found in the warm regions of Asia and Australia. We have determined the mitochondrial genome of O. glaber whose length is 16,259 bp including 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNAs, and a single large control region. The base composition was AT-biased (GC ratio is 17.8%). Gene order of O. glaber is identical to other species of the subfamily Dolichoderinae. Phylogenetic trees show that O. glaber is nested in other mitochondrial genomes of tribe Leptomyrmecini, implying the neotropical genera are ancestral to Australian genera such as Ochetellus.

Japanese Tetramorium queens: identification key and species diagnoses (Hymenoptera, Formicidae, Myrmicinae)

Project description:Abstract In Japan, nine species have been known in the ant genus Tetramorium, of which five or more are considered tramps. A key to the queens of nine Tetramorium species found in Japan is presented. The tramp species T.tonganum Mayr, 1870 is excluded from the key because no queen was available for us, while T.pacificum Mayr, 1870 is included because it was once intercepted at a port in Japan and exotic queens were available. Diagnosis of the queen of each species is provided together with differences between the two female castes. Tetramoriumtanakai Bolton, 1977 is resurrected from synonymy with T.kraepelini Forel, 1905 based mainly on the queen characters.

The complete mitochondrial genome of yellow crazy ant, Anoplolepis gracilipes (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Project description:The yellow crazy ant Anoplolepis gracilipes is an invasive species that threatens biodiversity in introduced ecosystems. We sequenced the A. gracilipes mitogenome using next-generation sequencing methods. The circular mitogenome of A. gracilipes was 16,943 bp included 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNAs, and a single large non-coding region of 893 bp. The base composition was AT-biased (72%). Three genomic rearrangements compared to ancestral insects were found. Phylogenetic analysis based on the concatenated nucleotide sequences of the 13 protein-coding genes supports A. gracilipes belonging to the Formicinae subfamily. We announce the A. gracilipes mitogenome as a DNA reference for further population genetic, phylogenetic, and evolutionary analyses.

The complete mitochondrial genome of a parthenogenetic ant Monomorium triviale (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Project description:Monomorium is one of the most species-rich yet taxonomically problematic ant genus. An East Asian species, M. triviale Wheeler, W.M., 1906, is reproduced by obligate thelytokous parthenogenesis and performs strict reproductive division of labor. We sequenced the M. triviale mitogenome using next-generation sequencing methods. The circular mitogenome of M. triviale was 16,290 bp in length, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNAs, and a single non-coding region of 568 bp. The base composition was AT-biased (82%). Gene order rearrangements were detected and likely to be unique to the genus Monomorium. We announce the M. triviale mitogenome as additional genomic resources for elucidating phylogenetic and taxonomic problems of Monomorium and comparative genomics of parthenogenetic ant species.

Mitochondrial genome evolution in fire ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Project description:BackgroundComplete mitochondrial genome sequences have become important tools for the study of genome architecture, phylogeny, and molecular evolution. Despite the rapid increase in available mitogenomes, the taxonomic sampling often poorly reflects phylogenetic diversity and is often also biased to represent deeper (family-level) evolutionary relationships.ResultsWe present the first fully sequenced ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) mitochondrial genomes. We sampled four mitogenomes from three species of fire ants, genus Solenopsis, which represent various evolutionary depths. Overall, ant mitogenomes appear to be typical of hymenopteran mitogenomes, displaying a general A+T-bias. The Solenopsis mitogenomes are slightly more compact than other hymentoperan mitogenomes (~15.5 kb), retaining all protein coding genes, ribosomal, and transfer RNAs. We also present evidence of recombination between the mitogenomes of the two conspecific Solenopsis mitogenomes. Finally, we discuss potential ways to improve the estimation of phylogenies using complete mitochondrial genome sequences.ConclusionsThe ant mitogenome presents an important addition to the continued efforts in studying hymenopteran mitogenome architecture, evolution, and phylogenetics. We provide further evidence that the sampling across many taxonomic levels (including conspecifics and congeners) is useful and important to gain detailed insights into mitogenome evolution. We also discuss ways that may help improve the use of mitogenomes in phylogenetic analyses by accounting for non-stationary and non-homogeneous evolution among branches.

Complete mitochondrial genome of the acrobat ant Crematogaster teranishii Santschi, 1930 (Formicidae; Hymenoptera).

Project description:The genus Crematogaster is a diverse group of ants found around the world. We have completed the mitochondrial genome of Crematogaster teranishii, which is the first mitochondrial genome of the genus. The mitochondrial genome is 17,442 bp long and 20.3% in GC ratio, which is similar to those of other ants. It contains 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNAs, 22 transfer RNAs, and a control region with same gene order to other myrmicine species. The intergenic region between nad3 and trnA was unusually long compared to other ant species. Phylogenetic analysis showed that C. teranishii was closely related to other members of tribe Crematogastrini.
