Aerobic Visible-Light-Driven Borylation of Heteroarenes in a Gel Nanoreactor.

ABSTRACT: Heteroarene boronate esters constitute valuable intermediates in modern organic synthesis. As building blocks, they can be further applied to the synthesis of new materials, since they can be easily transformed into any other functional group. Efforts toward novel and efficient strategies for their preparation are clearly desirable. Here, we have achieved the borylation of commercially available heteroarene halides under very mild conditions in an easy-to-use gel nanoreactor. Its use of visible light as the energy source at room temperature in photocatalyst-free and aerobic conditions makes this protocol very attractive. The gel network provides an adequate stabilizing microenvironment to support wide substrate scope, including furan, thiophene, selenophene, and pyrrole boronate esters.

Project description:Azo compounds are useful molecules with a wide range of applications in organic chemistry. Here, a novel visible-light-driven oxidative dehydrogenation of alkyl 2-phenylhydrazinecarboxylates is used for the synthesis of azo compounds. This synthetic method was conducted under an aerobic environment with mild reaction conditions. Sodium anthraquinone sulfonate (SAQS) was employed as the crucial organic photocatalyst in a visible-light-driven reaction to generate various azo compounds in high yields. In addition, aerobic transformation of hydrazobenzenes to azobenzenes using visible light was successfully carried out under SAQS-mediated reaction conditions. This procedure is a practical and promising synthetic approach to produce useful azo compounds.

Visible light C-H amidation of heteroarenes with benzoyl azides.

Project description:Benzoyl azides were used for the direct and atom economic C-H amidation of electron rich heteroarenes in the presence of phosphoric acid, a photocatalyst and visible light. Hetero-aromatic amides are obtained in good yields at very mild reaction conditions with dinitrogen as the only by-product. The reaction allows the use of aryl-, heteroaryl- or alkenyl acyl azides and has a wide scope for heteroarenes, including pyrroles, indole, furan, benzofuran and thiophene giving good regio-selectivities and yields.

Effective Carbon/TiO2 Gel for Enhanced Adsorption and Demonstrable Visible Light Driven Photocatalytic Performance.

Project description:A new strategy to synthesise carbon/TiO2 gel by a sol-gel method is proposed. Textural, morphological, and chemical properties were characterised in detail and the synthesised material was proven to be an active adsorbent, as well as a visible light photocatalyst. Homogenously distributed TiO2 is mesoporous with high surface area and, hence, exhibited a high adsorption capacity. The adsorption equilibrium experimental data were well explained by the Sips isotherm model. Kinetic experiments demonstrated that experimental data fitted a pseudo second order model. The modification in electronic structure of TiO2 resulted in a reduced bandgap compared to commercial P25. The absorption edge studied through UV-Vis shifted to the visible region, hence, daylight photocatalytic activity was efficient against degradation of MB dye, as an example pollutant molecule. The material was easily removed post treatment, demonstrating potential for employment in industrial water treatment processes.

Visible Light-Mediated Direct C-H Aroylation and Alkylation of Heteroarenes.

Project description:Herein, we describe the photocatalytic generation of nucleophilic aroyl radicals from simple aroyl chlorides as a universal and efficient cross-coupling strategy for the direct aroylation of heteroarenes. Furthermore, visible light-mediated direct alkylation of heteroarenes has also been achieved using unactivated bromoalkanes as radical precursors. These two strategies feature high functional group tolerance, exclusive regioselectivity for reaction at the more electrophilic position of heteroarenes, easily accessible substrates, and mild reaction conditions. Moreover, mechanism studies of two reactions are carried out to support our hypotheses.

Zinc catalysed electrophilic C-H borylation of heteroarenes.

Project description:Cationic zinc Lewis acids catalyse the C-H borylation of heteroarenes using pinacol borane (HBPin) or catechol borane (HBCat). An electrophile derived from [IDippZnEt][B(C6F5)4] (IDipp = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) combined with N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (DMT) proved the most active in terms of C-H borylation scope and yield. Using this combination weakly activated heteroarenes, such as thiophene, were amenable to catalytic C-H borylation using HBCat. Competition reactions show these IDipp-zinc cations are highly oxophilic but less hydridophilic (relative to B(C6F5)3), and that borylation proceeds via activation of the hydroborane (and not the heteroarene) by a zinc electrophile. Based on DFT calculations this activation is proposed to proceed by coordination of a hydroborane oxygen to the zinc centre to generate a boron electrophile that effects C-H borylation. Thus, Lewis acid binding to oxygen sites of hydroboranes represents an under-developed route to access reactive borenium-type electrophiles for C-H borylation.

Visible Light-Induced Borylation of C-O, C-N, and C-X Bonds.

Project description:Boronic acids are centrally important functional motifs and synthetic precursors. Visible light-induced borylation may provide access to structurally diverse boronates, but a broadly efficient photocatalytic borylation method that can effect borylation of a wide range of substrates, including strong C-O bonds, remains elusive. Herein, we report a general, metal-free visible light-induced photocatalytic borylation platform that enables borylation of electron-rich derivatives of phenols and anilines, chloroarenes, as well as other haloarenes. The reaction exhibits excellent functional group tolerance, as demonstrated by the borylation of a range of structurally complex substrates. Remarkably, the reaction is catalyzed by phenothiazine, a simple organic photocatalyst with MW < 200 that mediates the previously unachievable visible light-induced single electron reduction of phenol derivatives with reduction potentials as negative as approximately - 3 V versus SCE by a proton-coupled electron transfer mechanism. Mechanistic studies point to the crucial role of the photocatalyst-base interaction.

Visible Light-Induced Room-Temperature Heck Reaction of Functionalized Alkyl Halides with Vinyl Arenes/Heteroarenes.

Project description:The first visible light-induced Pd-catalyzed Heck reaction of α-heteroatom substituted alkyl iodides and -bromides with vinyl arenes/heteroarenes has been developed. This transformation efficiently proceeds at room temperature and enables synthesis of valuable functionalized allylic systems, such as allylic silanes, boronates, germanes, stannanes, pivalates, phosphonates, phthalimides, and tosylates from the corresponding α-substituted methyl iodides. Notably, synthesis of the latter substrates failed under existing thermally induced Pd-catalyzed conditions, which highlights the importance of visible light for this transformation.

Visible light-driven CdSe nanotube array photocatalyst.

Project description:Large-scale CdSe nanotube arrays on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass have been synthesized using ZnO nanorod template. The strong visible light absorption in CdSe, its excellent photoresponse, and the large surface area associated with the tubular morphology lead to good visible light-driven photocatalytic capability of these nanotube arrays. Compared to freestanding nanoparticles, such one-piece nanotube arrays on ITO make it very convenient for catalyst recycling after their usage.

Organocatalyzed Birch Reduction Driven by Visible Light.

Project description:The Birch reduction is a powerful synthetic methodology that uses solvated electrons to convert inert arenes to 1,4-cyclohexadienes-valuable intermediates for building molecular complexity. Birch reductions traditionally employ alkali metals dissolved in ammonia to produce a solvated electron for the reduction of unactivated arenes such as benzene (Ered < -3.42 V vs SCE). Photoredox catalysts have been gaining popularity in highly reducing applications, but none have been reported to demonstrate reduction potentials powerful enough to reduce benzene. Here, we introduce benzo[ghi]perylene imides as new organic photoredox catalysts for Birch reductions performed at ambient temperature and driven by visible light from commercially available LEDs. Using low catalyst loadings (<1 mol percent), benzene and other functionalized arenes were selectively transformed to 1,4-cyclohexadienes in moderate to good yields in a completely metal-free reaction. Mechanistic studies support that this unprecedented visible-light-induced reactivity is enabled by the ability of the organic photoredox catalyst to harness the energy from two visible-light photons to affect a single, high-energy chemical transformation.

Metal-Free C-H Borylation of N-Heteroarenes by Boron Trifluoride.

Project description:Organoboron compounds are essential reagents in modern C-C coupling reactions. Their synthesis via catalytic C-H borylation by main group elements is emerging as a powerful tool alternative to transition metal based catalysis. Herein, a straightforward metal-free synthesis of aryldifluoroboranes from BF3 and heteroarenes is reported. The reaction is assisted by sterically hindered amines and catalytic amounts of thioureas. According to computational studies the reaction proceeds via frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) mechanism. The obtained aryldifluoroboranes are further stabilized against destructive protodeborylation by converting them to the corresponding air stable tetramethylammonium organotrifluoroborates.
