Pyroptosis is an inflammatory type of regulated cell death that is dependent on inflammasome activation and downstream proteases such as caspase-1 or caspase 4/5/11. The main executors are gasdermins, which have an inherent pore-forming function on the membrane and release inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-18 and high mobility group box 1.
