Sol-Gel Combustion-Assisted Electrostatic Spray Deposition for Durable Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Cathodes.

ABSTRACT: The chemical instability of perovskite oxides containing Sr is a critical issue for the long-term operation of solid oxide fuel cells. In this study, we demonstrate a remarkable improvement in the chemical and electrochemical stability of a heterostructured La_0.6Sr_0.4CoO_3-δ (LSC)-Ce_0.9Gd_0.1O_1.95 (GDC) electrode. Electrostatic spray deposition was employed to fabricate heterostructured nanoparticles in a single step with a coaxial nozzle supplying the LSC powders in the core nozzle and the GDC precursors in the shell nozzle. Moreover, the reducing fuel added to the GDC precursor solution induced the sol-gel combustion reaction in the droplet to form a uniform nanocrystalline GDC coating with high surface coverage. The high surface coverage of GDC on the LSC more significantly improved long-term stability compared with than of the bare LSC cathode at a constant current density of 1 A/cm² at 600°C for 100 h.

Investigation of Electrochemical Assisted Deposition of Sol-Gel Silica Films for Long-Lasting Superhydrophobicity.

Project description:Current methods for the protection of metal surfaces utilize harsh chemical processes, such as organic paint or electro-plating, which are not environment-friendly and require extensive waste treatments. In this study, a two-step approach consisting of electrochemical assisted deposition (EAD) of an aqueous silane solution and a dip coating of a low surface energy silane for obtaining a superhydrophobic self-cleaning surface for the enhanced protection of copper substrate is presented. A porous and hierarchical micro-nanostructured silica basecoat (sol-gel) was first formed by EAD of a methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) precursor solution on a copper substrate. Then, a superhydrophobic top-coat (E-MTES/PFOTS) was prepared with 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PFOTS) for low surface energy. The superhydrophobic coating exhibited anti-stain properties against milk, cola, and oil, with contact angles of 151°, 151.5°, and 129°, respectively. The EAD deposition potential and duration were effective in controlling the microscopic morphology, surface roughness, and coating thickness. The E-MTES/PFOTS coatings exhibited chemical stability against acids, bases, and abrasion resistance by sandpaper. The proposed 2-layer coating system exhibited strong chemical bonding at the two interfaces and provided a brush-like surface morphology with long-lasting superhydrophobicity. The developed method would provide an environment-friendly and expedient process for uniform protective coatings on complex surfaces.

Microwave-Assisted Sol-Gel Preparation of the Nanostructured Magnetic System for Solid-Phase Synthesis.

Project description:This work describes a new synthesis method for core-shell magnetite nanoparticles with a secondary silica shell, functionalized with a linker system (Fe3O4-PABA-SiO2-linker) using a microwave-assisted heating technique. The functionalized solid nanomaterial was used for the nanophase synthesis of peptides (Fmoc route) as a solid support. The co-precipitation method was selected to obtain magnetite nanoparticles and sol-gel technique for silica coating using a microwave-assisted (MW) procedure. The magnetic properties of the nanoparticle core offer the advantage of a quick and easy alternative for the magnetic separation of the product from the reaction mixture, facilitating all the intermediary washing and separation operations. The intermediate and final materials were analyzed by advanced characterization methods. The effectiveness of the nanophase peptide synthesis using this nanostructured material as solid support was demonstrated for a short peptide sequence.

Copper-/Zinc-Doped TiO2 Nanopowders Synthesized by Microwave-Assisted Sol-Gel Method.

Project description:Using the microwave-assisted sol-gel method, Zn- and Cu-doped TiO2 nanoparticles with an anatase crystalline structure were prepared. Titanium (IV) butoxide was used as a TiO2 precursor, with parental alcohol as a solvent and ammonia water as a catalyst. Based on the TG/DTA results, the powders were thermally treated at 500 °C. XRD and XRF revealed the presence of a single-phase anatase and dopants in the thermally treated nanoparticles. The surface of the nanoparticles and the oxidation states of the elements were studied using XPS, which confirmed the presence of Ti, O, Zn, and Cu. The photocatalytic activity of the doped TiO2 nanopowders was tested for the degradation of methyl-orange (MO) dye. The results indicate that Cu doping increases the photoactivity of TiO2 in the visible-light range by narrowing the band-gap energy.

Solid-State Fluorescent Selenium Quantum Dots by a Solvothermal-Assisted Sol-Gel Route for Curcumin Sensing.

Project description:Toward the need for solid-state fluorescent quantum dots, resistant to self-quenching, we describe a solvothermal-assisted sol-gel method to synthesize Se quantum dots. Morphological and crystalline characterizations reveal that Se quantum dots (average size 3-8 nm) have a trigonal crystal structure. The presence of planar defects (dislocations, stacking faults, twins, and grain boundaries) suggests formation of Se nanocrystallites through aggregation-based crystal growth mechanisms. Under ultraviolet excitation, the quantum dots exhibit an excitation wavelength-dependent solid-state blue emission with an average lifetime of 1.96 ns. Depending on fluorescence quenching by curcumin, selenium quantum dots act as ideal candidates for inner filter effect-based curcumin sensing.

Tailoring Mesoporous Titania Features by Ultrasound-Assisted Sol-Gel Technique: Effect of Surfactant/Titania Precursor Weight Ratio.

Project description:A mesoporous titania structure has been prepared using the ultrasound-assisted sol-gel technique in order to find out a way to tailor its structure. The TiO2 obtained was compared to the same version of titania but synthesized by a conventional sol-gel method with the objective of understanding the effect of ultrasound in the synthesis process. All synthesis experiments were focused on the preparation of a titania photocatalyst. Thus, the anatase photocatalytic active phase of titania was proven by X-ray diffraction. Additionally, the ultrasonation treatment proved to increase the crystallinity of titania samples, being one of the requirements to having good photocatalytic activity for titania. The influence of surfactant/titania precursor weight ratio on the structural (XRD), textural (N2-sorption measurements), morphological (TEM), surface chemistry (FTIR) and optical properties (UVDR) was investigated. It was observed that the crystallite size, specific surface area, band gap energy and even photocatalytic activity was affected by the synergism occurring between cavitation effect and the surfactant/titania precursor weight ratio. The study yielded interesting great results that could be considered for further application of ultrasound to tailor mesoporous titania features via sol-gel soft template synthesis, against conventional sol-gel process.

Inorganic Sol-Gel Polymerization for Hydrogel Bioprinting.

Project description:An inorganic sol-gel polymerization process was used as a cross-linking reaction during three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting of cell-containing hydrogel scaffolds. Hybrid hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), with a controlled ratio of silylation, was prepared and isolated as a 3D-network precursor. When dissolved in a biological buffer containing human mesenchymal stem cells, it yields a bioink that can be printed during polymerization by extrusion. It is worth noting that the sol-gel process proceeded at pH 7.4 using biocompatible mode of catalysis (NaF and glycine). The printing window was determined by rheology and viscosity measurements. The physicochemical properties of hydrogels were studied. Covalent functionalization of the network can be easily performed by adding a triethoxysilyl-containing molecule; a fluorescent hybrid molecule was used as a proof of concept.

Foldable and Cytocompatible Sol-gel TiO2 Photonics.

Project description:Integrated photonics provides a miniaturized and potentially implantable platform to manipulate and enhance the interactions between light and biological molecules or tissues in in-vitro and in-vivo settings, and is thus being increasingly adopted in a wide cross-section of biomedical applications ranging from disease diagnosis to optogenetic neuromodulation. However, the mechanical rigidity of substrates traditionally used for photonic integration is fundamentally incompatible with soft biological tissues. Cytotoxicity of materials and chemicals used in photonic device processing imposes another constraint towards these biophotonic applications. Here we present thin film TiO2 as a viable material for biocompatible and flexible integrated photonics. Amorphous TiO2 films were deposited using a low temperature (<250 °C) sol-gel process fully compatible with monolithic integration on plastic substrates. High-index-contrast flexible optical waveguides and resonators were fabricated using the sol-gel TiO2 material, and resonator quality factors up to 20,000 were measured. Following a multi-neutral-axis mechanical design, these devices exhibit remarkable mechanical flexibility, and can sustain repeated folding without compromising their optical performance. Finally, we validated the low cytotoxicity of the sol-gel TiO2 devices through in-vitro cell culture tests. These results demonstrate the potential of sol-gel TiO2 as a promising material platform for novel biophotonic devices.

Effects of Additives on Electrochromic Properties of Nanocrystalline Tungsten Oxide Films Prepared by Complexation-Assisted Sol-Gel Method.

Project description:To improve the electrochromic (EC) properties of sol-gel-derived WO3 films, a series of organic small molecules, such as dopamine (DA), catechol, tyramine, phenol and 2-phenylethylamine, were added into peroxotungstic acid precursor sols as structure-directing additives, and five modified WO3 films were prepared by a simple and low-cost complexation-assisted sol-gel method. The effects of the above additives on the EC properties of the modified WO3 films have been studied in detail. Compared with the pure WO3 polycrystalline film, all the modified films combine the advantages of nanocrystalline and amorphous phases and show higher EC properties attributed to the unique nanocrystal-embedded amorphous structure. The results indicate that different additives with different numbers and types of functional groups (hydroxyl and amino groups) can change the microstructure, morphology, and thus electrochemical and EC properties of the films in various degrees. The additives, in order of their strong interactions with the sols, are DA, catechol, tyramine, phenol and 2-phenylethylamine, primarily depending on the number of hydroxyl groups. Of all the additives, DA with both catechol hydroxyl and amino groups shows the most positive effect; that is, the WO3 film modified with DA exhibits the best EC properties in terms of contrast, switching speed, stability, and coloration efficiency.

Photoluminescence and afterglow of Dy3+ doped CaAl2O4 derived via sol-gel combustion.

Project description:With doping concentration varying from 0.1 to 5.0 mol%, a series of Dy3+ doped calcium aluminate (CaAl2O4:Dy3+) phosphors were synthesized via a sol-gel combustion technique. The phase, morphology, photoluminescence (PL), afterglow, and thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves of CaAl2O4:Dy3+ were investigated by means of X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, PL spectroscopy, afterglow spectroscopy, and TL dosimetry, respectively. It is found that: (i) oxygen vacancies and Dy3+ work as two independent sets of luminescence centers of PL for CaAl2O4:Dy3+; (ii) Dy3+ works as the luminescence center of afterglow for CaAl2O4:Dy3+; (iii) the afterglow of CaAl2O4:Dy3+ lasts for about 115 min at the optimal doping concentration of around 0.8 mol%; and (iv) multiple traps, which are sensitive to doping concentration, are present in CaAl2O4:Dy3+. The PL and afterglow mechanisms of CaAl2O4:Dy3+ are discussed to reveal the processes of charged carrier excitation, migration, trapping, detrapping, and radiative recombination in CaAl2O4:Dy3+.
