Fabrication of chemically stable hydrogen- and niobium-codoped ZnO transparent conductive films.

ABSTRACT: H- and Nb-doped ZnO (HNZO) thin films were fabricated on glass substrates with radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The effect of the flow rate of H₂ has been investigated by analyzing the structural, optical, and electrical properties. The incorporation of H during the deposition of Nb-incorporated ZnO films significantly improved their crystallinity, conductivity, and transmittance. The crystallites of the HNZO films were preferentially oriented in the c-axis direction; the films possess high transmittance (approximately 85%) in the visible and near-infrared regions (400 to 1400 nm). The lowest room-temperature resistivity of the HNZO films was measured as 1.28 × 10^-3 Ω cm. Such optical and electrical properties along with the remarkable chemical stability of the HNZO films make them a promising candidate for applications in solar cells.

Synthesis and Characterization of Optically Transparent and Electrically Conductive Mo-Doped ZnO, F-Doped ZnO, and Mo/F-Codoped ZnO Thin Films via Aerosol-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition.

Project description:Mo-doped ZnO (MZO), F-doped ZnO (FZO), and Mo/F-codoped ZnO (MFZO) films have been deposited using a simple, cheap, and effective thin-film preparation route, aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD). ZnO was successfully doped with Mo and/or F, confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and by a decrease in unit cell parameters from X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD also confirmed that all of the films had hexagonal wurtzite ZnO structures. Scanning electron microscopy showed that all of the films had well-defined surface features. The undoped ZnO film had a high resistivity of ∼102 Ω·cm, determined by Hall effect measurements, and a visible light transmittance of 72%, determined by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis)-IR spectroscopy. The transmittance of the doped and codoped films was improved to 75-85%. The ZnO film codoped with 6.2 atom% Mo and 3.6 atom% F, deposited at 550 °C achieved the minimum resistance (5.084 × 10-3 Ω·cm) with a significant improvement in carrier concentration (5.483 × 1019 cm-3) and mobility (21.78 cm2 V-1 s-1).

Low-Cost One-Step Fabrication of Highly Conductive ZnO:Cl Transparent Thin Films with Tunable Photocatalytic Properties via Aerosol-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition.

Project description:Low-cost, high-efficiency, and high quality Cl-doped ZnO (ZnO:Cl) thin films that can simultaneously function as transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) and photocatalysts are described. The films have been fabricated by a facile and inexpensive solution-source aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition technique using NH4Cl as an effective, cheap, and abundant source of Cl. Successful ClO substitutional doping in the ZnO films was evident from powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry results, while scanning electron microscopy reveals the impact of Cl doping on the ZnO thin film morphology. All ZnO:Cl films deposited were transparent and uncolored; optical transmittance in the visible region (400-700 nm) exceeded 80% for depositions using 5-20 mol % Cl. Optimal electrical properties were achieved when using 5 mol % Cl with a minimum measured resistivity of (2.72 ± 0.04) × 10-3 Ω·cm, in which the charge carrier concentration and mobility were measured at (8.58 ± 0.16) × 1019 cm-3 and 26.7 ± 0.1 cm2 V-1 s-1 respectively, corresponding to a sheet resistance (R sh) of 41.9 Ω□-1 at a thickness of 650 nm. In addition to transparent conducting properties, photocatalytic behavior of stearic acid degradation in the ZnO:Cl films was also observed with an optimal Cl concentration of 7 mol % Cl, with the highest formal quantum efficiency (ξ) measured at (1.63 ± 0.03) × 10-4 molecule/photon, while retaining a visible transparency of 80% and resistivity ρ = (9.23 ± 0.13) × 10-3 Ω·cm. The dual functionality of ZnO:Cl as both a transparent conductor and an efficient photocatalyst is a unique combination of properties making this a particularly unusual material.

Scalable Solution-Processed Fabrication Approach for High-Performance Silver Nanowire/MXene Hybrid Transparent Conductive Films.

Project description:The transparent conductive films (TCFs) based on silver nanowires are expected to be a next-generation electrode for flexible electronics. However, their defects such as easy oxidation and high junction resistance limit its wide application in practical situations. Herein, a method of coating Ti3C2Tx with different sizes was proposed to prepare silver nanowire/MXene composite films. The solution-processed silver nanowire (AgNW) networks were patched and welded by capillary force effect through the double-coatings of small and large MXene nanosheets. The sheet resistance of the optimized AgNW/MXene TCFs was 15.1 Ω/sq, the optical transmittance at 550 nm was 89.3%, and the figure of merit value was 214.4. Moreover, the AgNW/MXene TCF showed higher stability at 1600 mechanical bending, annealing at 100 °C for 50 h, and exposure to ambient air for 40 days. These results indicate that the novel AgNW/MXene TCFs have a great potential for high-performance flexible optoelectronic devices.

Moire-fringeless Transparent Conductive Films with a Random Serpentine Network of Medium-Field Electrospun, Chemically Annealed Silver Microfibres.

Project description:Low-cost flexible transparent conductive films (TCFs) with direct writing of metal grids have been explored as a promising alternative to conventional indium-tin-oxide-based TCFs for future flexible electronics. However, flexible TCFs have raised technical concerns because of their disadvantages, such as low resolution, low productivity, poor optoelectrical performance, poor thermal stability, and adverse moiré fringes, which primarily arise from the superposition of periodic patterns. Herein, a facile and highly productive method to fabricate moiré-fringeless TCFs with good optoelectrical characteristics and excellent thermal stability is presented using a single-pass printed random serpentine network of medium-field electrospun silver microfibres (AgMFs) with a line width of 2.32 ± 0.97 μm by exploiting the random serpentine motion of medium-field electrospinning, enabling moiré-fringeless TCFs. The electrical in-plane anisotropy of the TCFs can be kept well below 110.44 ± 1.26% with the in situ junction formation of the AgMFs in the transverse direction. Combined thermal and chemical annealing of the AgMFs enables high productivity by reducing the thermal annealing time by 40%. The good optoelectrical performance, fair electrical in-plane anisotropy, high productivity, and superior thermal stability of the TCFs with the single-pass printed random serpentine network of medium-field electrospun AgMFs are suitable properties for flexible electronics such as ultra-large digital signage with LEDs.

Fabrication of Transparent and Conductive SWCNT/SiO2 Composite Thin-Film by Photo-Irradiation of Molecular Precursor Films.

Project description:A single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)-silica composite thin film on a quartz glass was formed by ultraviolet irradiation (20-40 °C) onto a spin-coated precursor film. With 7.4 mass% SWCNTs, the electrical resistivity reached 7.7 × 10-3 Ω·cm after UV-irradiation. The transmittance was >80% at 178-2600 nm, and 79%-73% at 220-352 nm. Heat treatment increased the transparency and pencil hardness, without affecting the low electrical resistivity. Raman spectroscopy and microscopic analyses revealed the excellent film morphology with good SWCNT dispersal. The low refractive index (1.49) and haze value (<1.5%) are invaluable for transparent windows for novel optoelectronic devices.

Chemically Stable Group IV-V Transition Metal Carbide Thin Films in Hydrogen Radical Environments.

Project description:Hydrogen is a crucial element in the green energy transition. However, its tendency to react with and diffuse into surrounding materials poses a significant challenge. Therefore, developing coatings to protect system components in hydrogen environments (molecular, radicals (H*), and plasma) is essential. In this work, we report group IV-V transition metal carbide (TMC) thin films as potential candidates for protective coatings in H* environments at elevated temperatures. We expose TiC, ZrC, HfC, VC, NbC, TaC, and Co2C thin films, with native surface oxycarbides/oxides (TMO x C y /TMO x ), to H* at elevated temperatures. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy performed on the samples before and after H*-exposure, we identify three classes of TMCs. HfC, ZrC, TiC, TaC, NbC, and VC (class A) are found to have a stable carbidic-C (TM-C) content, with a further subdivision into partial (class A1: HfC, ZrC, and TiC) and strong (class A2: TaC, NbC, and VC) surface deoxidation. In contrast to class A, a strong carbide reduction is observed in Co2C (class B), along with a strong surface deoxidation. The H* interaction with TMC/TMO x C y /TMO x is hypothesized to entail three processes: (i) hydrogenation of surface C/O atoms, (ii) formation of CH x /OH x species, and (iii) subsurface C/O atom diffusion to the surface vacancies. The number of adsorbed H atoms required to form CH x /OH x species (i) and the corresponding thermodynamic energy barriers (ii) are estimated based on the change in the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) for the reduction reactions of TMCs and TMO x . Hydrogenation of surface carbidic-C atoms is proposed to limit the reduction of TMCs, whereas the deoxidation of TMC surfaces is governed by the thermodynamic energy barrier for forming H2O.

Stretchable Transparent Conductive Films from Long Carbon Nanotube Metals.

Project description:Flexible transparent conductors are an enabling component for large-area flexible displays, wearable electronics, and implantable medical sensors that can wrap around and move with the body. However, conventional conductive materials decay quickly under tensile strain, posing a significant hurdle for functional flexible devices. Here, we show that high electrical conductivity, mechanical stretchability, and optical transparency can be simultaneously attained by compositing long metallic double-walled carbon nanotubes with a polydimethylsiloxane substrate. When stretched to 100% tensile strain, thin films incorporating these long nanotubes (≈3.2 µm on average) achieve a record high conductivity of 3316 S cm-1 at 100% tensile strain and 85% optical transmittance, which is 194 times higher than that of short nanotube controls (≈0.8 µm on average). Moreover, the high conductivity can withstand more than 1000 repeated stretch-release cycles (switching between 100% and 0% strain) with a retention approaching 96%, whereas the short nanotube controls exhibit only 10%. Mechanistic studies reveal that long tubes can bridge the microscale gaps generated during stretching, thereby maintaining high electrical conductivity. When mounted on human joints, this elastic transparent conductor can accommodate large motions to provide stable, high current output. These results point to transparent conductors capable of attaining high electrical conductivity and optical transmittance under mechanical strain to allow large shape changes that may take place in the operation and use of flexible electronics.

Transparent Conductive Two-Dimensional Titanium Carbide Epitaxial Thin Films.

Project description:Since the discovery of graphene, the quest for two-dimensional (2D) materials has intensified greatly. Recently, a new family of 2D transition metal carbides and carbonitrides (MXenes) was discovered that is both conducting and hydrophilic, an uncommon combination. To date MXenes have been produced as powders, flakes, and colloidal solutions. Herein, we report on the fabrication of ∼1 × 1 cm2 Ti3C2 films by selective etching of Al, from sputter-deposited epitaxial Ti3AlC2 films, in aqueous HF or NH4HF2. Films that were about 19 nm thick, etched with NH4HF2, transmit ∼90% of the light in the visible-to-infrared range and exhibit metallic conductivity down to ∼100 K. Below 100 K, the films' resistivity increases with decreasing temperature and they exhibit negative magnetoresistance-both observations consistent with a weak localization phenomenon characteristic of many 2D defective solids. This advance opens the door for the use of MXenes in electronic, photonic, and sensing applications.

Optoelectronic and Electrothermal Properties of Transparent Conductive Silver Nanowires Films.

Project description:Silver nanowires (AgNWs) show promise for fabricating flexible transparent conductors owing to their excellent conductivity, high transparency, and good mechanical properties. Here, we present the fabrication of transparent films composed of AgNWs with diameters of 20-30 nm and lengths of 25-30 μm on polyethylene terephthalate substrates and glass slides substrates using the Meyer rod method. We systematically investigated the films' optoelectronic and electrothermal properties. The morphology remained intact when heated at 25-150 °C and the AgNWs film showed high conductivity (17.6-14.3 Ω∙sq-1), excellent transmittance (93.9-91.8%) and low surface roughness values (11.2-14.7 nm). When used as a heater, the transparent AgNW conductive film showed rapid heating at low input voltages owing to a uniform heat distribution across the whole substrate surface. Additionally, the conductivity of the film decreased with increasing bending cycle numbers; however, the film still exhibited a good conductivity and heating performances after repeated bending.

Sol-Gel-Deposited Ti-Doped ZnO: Toward Cell Fouling Transparent Conductive Oxides.

Project description:Ti-doped ZnO thin films were obtained with the aim of tailoring ZnO film bioadhesiveness and making the optoelectronic properties of ZnO materials transferable to biological environments. The films were prepared on silicon substrates by sol-gel spin-coating and subsequent annealing. A Ti-O segregation limits the ZnO crystallite growth and creates a buffer out-layer. Consequently, the Ti-doped ZnO presents slightly increased resistivity, which remains in the order of 10-3 Ω·cm. The strong biochemical interference of Zn2+ ions released from pure ZnO surfaces was evidenced by culturing Staphylococcus epidermidis with and without the Zn2+ coupling agent clioquinol. The Ti-doped ZnO surfaces showed a considerable increase of bacterial viability with respect to pure ZnO. Cell adhesion was assayed with human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Although hMSCs find difficulties to adhere to the pure ZnO surface, they progressively expand on the surface of ZnO when the Ti doping is increased. A preliminary microdevice has been built on the Si substrate with a ZnO film doped with 5% Ti. A one-dimensional micropattern with a zigzag structure shows the preference of hMSCs for adhesion on Ti-doped ZnO with respect to Si. The induced contrast of surface tension further induces a cell polarization effect on hMSCs. It is suggested that the presence of Ti-O covalent bonding on the doped surfaces provides a much more stable ground for bioadhesion. Such fouling behavior suggests an influence of Ti doping on film bioadhesiveness and sets the starting point for the selection of optimal materials for implantable optoelectronic devices.
