Synthesis and characterization of a ZnGa₂O₄:Cr³⁺-based aerogel.

ABSTRACT: A ZnGa₂O₄:Cr³⁺-based aerogel was prepared by using polyacrylic acid (PAA) as a dispersant and propylene oxide (PO) as a crosslinking agent via CO₂ supercritical drying. The results of BET and SEM show that there is a certain degree of macroporosity (d > 50 nm) in the aerogel. It has a dendritic structure and the interior is relatively loose. EDS mapping illustrates that the elements Zn, Ga, and Cr are evenly distributed in the aerogel. In addition, the diffuse reflectance spectra and the emission spectrum of samples with different calcination temperatures were also characterized. Both demonstrated, when the calcination temperature is greater than 600 °C, that the sample crystallizes and has a significant emission, which is consistent with the XRD and TG-DSG results. Finally, the ZnGa₂O₄:Cr³⁺-based aerogel also exhibits excellent long afterglow performance and high photocatalytic performance with 80.1% methylene blue (MB) degradation at 20 min.

Luminescence properties of ZnGa2O4:Cr3+,Bi3+ nanophosphors for thermometry applications.

Project description:Chromium(iii) and bismuth(iii) co-doped ZnGa2O4 nanoparticles are synthesized by a hydrothermal method assisted by microwave heating. The obtained nanoparticles, with a diameter smaller than 10 nm, present good luminescence emission in the deep red range centered at 695 nm after coating with a silica layer and calcination at 1000 °C during 2 h. Persistent luminescence and photoluminescence properties are investigated at several temperatures. Bandwidth and luminescence intensity ratio of persistent emission do not present enough change with temperature to obtain a competitive nanothermometer with high sensitivity. Nevertheless, persistent luminescence decay curves present a significant shape change since the trap levels involved in the deexcitation mechanism are unfilled with increase of temperature. Even if the sensitivity reaches 1.7% °C-1 at 190 °C, the repeatability is not optimal. Furthermore, photoluminescent lifetime in the millisecond range extracted from the photoluminescence decay profiles drastically decreases with temperature increase. This variation is attributed to the thermal equilibrium between two thermally coupled chromium(iii) levels (2E and 4T2) that have very different deexcitation lifetimes. For ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ 0.5%,Bi3+ 0.5%, the temperature sensitivity reaches 1.93% °C-1 at 200 °C. Therefore, this kind of nanoparticle is a very promising thermal sensor for temperature determination at the nanoscale.

Trap Depth Distribution Determines Afterglow Kinetics: A Local Model Applied to ZnGa2O4:Cr3.

Project description:Persistent luminescence materials have applications in diverse fields such as smart signaling, anticounterfeiting, and in vivo imaging. However, the lack of a thorough understanding of the precise mechanisms that govern persistent luminescence makes it difficult to develop ways to optimize it. Here we present an accurate model to describe the various processes that determine persistent luminescence in ZnGa2O4:Cr3+, a workhorse material in the field. A set of rate equations has been solved, and a global fit to both charge/discharge and thermoluminescence measurements has been performed. Our results establish a direct link between trap depth distribution and afterglow kinetics and shed light on the main challenges associated with persistent luminescence in ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ nanoparticles, identifying low trapping probability and optical detrapping as the main factors limiting the performance of ZnGa2O4:Cr3+, with a large margin for improvement. Our results highlight the importance of accurate modeling for the design of future afterglow materials and devices.

Single-Stage Microfluidic Synthesis Route for BaGdF5:Tb3+-Based Nanocomposite Materials: Synthesis, Characterization and Biodistribution.

Project description:Rare-earth-doped nanoscaled BaGdF5 is known as an efficient contrasting agent for X-ray micro-CT and NMR as well as a promising candidate for X-ray photodynamic therapy, thereby opening an opportunity for theragnostic applications. Conventional synthesis of Ln-doped BaGdF5 consider a long-lasting batch procedure, while a conjugation with photosensitizer usually implies a separate stage requiring active mixing. To the best of our knowledge, in this work, we for the first time obtain BaGdF5:Tb3+ nanophosphors in a microfluidic route at temperatures as low as 100 °C while decreasing the time of thermal treatment down to 6 min. The proposed synthesis route allows for the obtaining of single-phase and monodisperse BaGd1-xF5:Tbx3+ nanoparticles with an averaged particle size of ca. 7-9 nm and hydrodynamic radius around 22 nm, as estimated from TEM and DLS, respectively. In addition, X-ray-excited optical luminescence has been recorded in situ for the series of nanophosphors synthesis with varied flow rates of Tb3+ and Gd3+ stock solutions, thereby anticipating a possible application of microfluidics for screening a wide range of possible co-dopants and reaction conditions and its effect on the optical properties of the synthesized materials. Moreover, we demonstrated that BaGd1-xF5:Tbx3+@RoseBengal conjugates might be obtained in a single-stage route by implementing an additional mixer at the synthesis outcome, namely, by mixing the resulting reaction mixture containing nanoparticles with an equivalent flow of photosensitizer aqueous solution. In vitro cytotoxicity test declares moderate toxicity effect on different cell lines, while the results of flow cytometry indirectly confirm cellular uptake. Finally, we report long-term biodistribution monitoring of the synthesized nanocomposites assessed by X-ray micro-CT in the in vivo experiments on balb/c mice, which depicts an unusual character of agents' accumulation.

Deep-Ultraviolet Photodetectors Based on Epitaxial ZnGa2O4 Thin Films.

Project description:A single-crystalline ZnGa2O4 epilayer was successfully grown on c-plane (0001) sapphire substrate by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. This epilayer was used as a ternary oxide semiconductor for application in high-performance metal-semiconductor-metal photoconductive deep-ultraviolet (DUV) photodetectors (PDs). At a bias of 5 V, the annealed ZnGa2O4 PDs showed better performance with a considerably low dark current of 1 pA, a responsivity of 86.3 A/W, cut-off wavelength of 280 nm, and a high DUV-to-visible discrimination ratio of approximately 107 upon exposure to 230 nm DUV illumination than that of as-grown ZnGa2O4 PDs. The as-grown PDs presented a dark current of 0.5 mA, a responsivity of 2782 A/W at 230 nm, and a photo-to-dark current contrast ratio of approximately one order. The rise time of annealed PDs was 0.5 s, and the relatively quick decay time was 0.7 s. The present results demonstrate that annealing process can reduce the oxygen vacancy defects and be potentially applied in ZnGa2O4 film-based DUV PD devices, which have been rarely reported in previous studies.

Heteroleptic mer-[Cr(N∩N∩N)(CN)3] complexes: synthetic challenge, structural characterization and photophysical properties.

Project description:The substitution of three water molecules around trivalent chromium in CrBr3·6H2O with the tridentate 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (tpy), N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-di(pyridine-2-yl)pyridine-2,6-diamine (ddpd) or 2,6-di(quinolin-8-yl)pyridine (dqp) ligands gives the heteroleptic mer-[Cr(L)Br3] complexes. Stepwise treatments with Ag(CF3SO3) and KCN under microwave irradiations provide mer-[Cr(L)(CN)3] in moderate yields. According to their X-ray crystal structures, the associated six-coordinate meridional [CrN3C3] chromophores increasingly deviate from a pseudo-octahedral arrangement according to L = ddpd ≈ dpq ≪ tpy; a trend in line with the replacement of six-membered with five-membered chelate rings around CrIII. Room-temperature ligand-centered UV-excitation at 18 170 cm-1 (λexc = 350 nm), followed by energy transfer and intersystem crossing eventually yield microsecond metal-centered Cr(2E → 4A2) phosphorescence in the red to near infrared domain 13 150-12 650 cm-1 (760 ≤ λem ≤ 790 nm). Decreasing the temperature to liquid nitrogen (77 K) extends the emission lifetimes to reach the millisecond regime with a record of 4.02 ms for mer-[Cr(dqp)(CN)3] in frozen acetonitrile.

Solvothermal Synthesis of [Cr7 S8 (en)8 Cl2 ]Cl3 ⋅ 2H2 O with Magnetically Frustrated [Cr7 S8 ]5+ Double-Cubes.

Project description:A novel transition metal chalcohalide [Cr7 S8 (en)8 Cl2 ]Cl3 ⋅ 2H2 O, with [Cr7 S8 ]5+ dicubane cationic clusters, has been synthesized by a low temperature solvothermal method, using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and ethylenediamine (en) solvents. Ethylenediamine ligand exhibits bi- and monodentate coordination modes; in the latter case ethylenediamine coordinates to Cr atoms of adjacent clusters, giving rise to a 2D polymeric structure. Although magnetic susceptibility shows no magnetic ordering down to 1.8 K, a highly negative Weiss constant, θ=-224(2) K, obtained from Curie-Weiss fit of inverse susceptibility, suggests strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between S=3/2 Cr(III) centers. Due to the complexity of the system with (2S+1)7 =16384 microstates from seven Cr3+ centers, a simplified model with only two exchange constants was used for simulations. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations yielded the two exchange constants to be J1 =-21.4 cm-1 and J2 =-30.2 cm-1 , confirming competing AFM coupling between the shared Cr3+ center and the peripheral Cr3+ ions of the dicubane cluster. The best simulation of the experimental data was obtained with J1 =-20.0 cm-1 and J2 =-21.0 cm-1 , in agreement with the slightly stronger AFM exchange within the triangles of the peripheral Cr3+ ions as compared to the AFM exchange between the central and peripheral Cr3+ ions. This compound is proposed as a synthon towards magnetically frustrated systems assembled by linking dicubane transition metal-chalcogenide clusters into polymeric networks.

The Impact of Cr3+ Doping on Temperature Sensitivity Modulation in Cr3+ Doped and Cr3+, Nd3+ Co-doped Y3Al5O12, Y3Al2Ga3O12, and Y3Ga5O12 Nanothermometers.

Project description:A new approach to enhance the sensitivity of transition metal ion based nanocrystalline luminescent thermometer is presented. It was shown that the increase of Cr3+ concentration in three types of garnet host namely Y3Al5O12, Y3Ga5O12, and Y3Al2Ga3O12 allows for significant enhancement of their performance in non-contact thermometry. This phenomenon is related to the weakening of the crystal field strength due to enlargement of average Cr3+-O2- distance at higher Cr3+ concentrations. By increasing Cr3+ concentration from 0.6 to 30%, the sensitivity increased by over one order of magnitude from S = 0.2%/°C to S = 2.2%/°C at 9°C in Y3Al2Ga3O12 nanocrystals. Moreover, it was found that due to the Cr3+ → Nd3+ energy transfer in the Cr3+, Nd3+ co-doped system, the usable Cr3+ concentration, for which its emission can be detected, is limited to 10% while the sensitivity at -50°C was doubled (from 1.3%/°C for Y3Al2Ga3O12:10%Cr3+ to 2.2%/°C Y3Al2Ga3O12:10%Cr3+, 1%Nd3+ nanocrystals).

Synthesis and Characterization of Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Magnetic MoS2@Fe3O4 Nanoparticles for Adsorption of Cr(VI)/Cr(III).

Project description:Recently, two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received tremendous attention in many fields including environmental remediation. Magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4NPs) decorated with MoS2 (MoS2@Fe3O4NPs) have been synthesized via a new one-step synthesis route and utilized as an efficient adsorbent for removal of Cr(VI)/Cr(III) from aqueous solutions. The obtained MoS2@Fe3O4NPs with numerous surface hydroxyl groups show uniform size and shape, excellent water-dispersibility, and superior magnetic property to enhance the adsorption. The physicochemical properties of the adsorbent prior to and after adsorption of Cr(VI)/Cr(III) were extensively characterized using several advanced instrumental techniques.The adsorption of Cr(VI)/Cr(III) on MoS2@Fe3O4NPs was performed under batch conditions aiming at identification of optimal contact time, pH value of chromium solution, and influence of the presence of competitive ions. This study was supported by modeling of adsorption equilibrium and kinetics by using empirical equations.

Synthesis and Electrochemical Properties of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Cathode Materials with Cr3+ and F- Composite Doping for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:A Cr3+ and F- composite-doped LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode material was synthesized by the solid-state method, and the influence of the doping amount on the material's physical and electrochemical properties was investigated. The structure and morphology of the cathode material were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, and HRTEM, and the results revealed that the sample exhibited clear spinel features. No Cr3+ and F- impurity phases were found, and the spinel structure became more stable. The results of the charge/discharge tests, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test results suggested that LiCr0.05Ni0.475Mn1.475O3.95F0.05 in which the Cr3+ and F- doping amounts were both 0.05, had the optimal electrochemical properties, with discharge rates of 0.1, 0.5, 2, 5, and 10 C and specific capacities of 134.18, 128.70, 123.62, 119.63, and 97.68 mAh g-1 , respectively. After 50 cycles at a rate of 2 C, LiCr0.05Ni0.475Mn1.475O3.95F0.05 showed extremely good cycling performance, with a discharge specific capacity of 121.02 mAh g-1 and a capacity retention rate of 97.9%. EIS test revealed that the doping clearly decreased the charge-transfer resistance.

Synthesis and characterization of a nanocrystalline diamond aerogel.

Project description:Aerogel materials have myriad scientific and technological applications due to their large intrinsic surface areas and ultralow densities. However, creating a nanodiamond aerogel matrix has remained an outstanding and intriguing challenge. Here we report the high-pressure, high-temperature synthesis of a diamond aerogel from an amorphous carbon aerogel precursor using a laser-heated diamond anvil cell. Neon is used as a chemically inert, near-hydrostatic pressure medium that prevents collapse of the aerogel under pressure by conformally filling the aerogel's void volume. Electron and X-ray spectromicroscopy confirm the aerogel morphology and composition of the nanodiamond matrix. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements of recovered material reveal the formation of both nitrogen- and silicon- vacancy point-defects, suggesting a broad range of applications for this nanocrystalline diamond aerogel.
