Synthesis and robocasting of YAG xerogel: one-step conversion of ceramics.

ABSTRACT: An optimized sol-gel protocol was carried out to produce an yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) xerogel from aluminum alkoxide and an yttrium salt on a semi-pilot scale. This xerogel was successfully used without prior pyrolysis as a solid load with the aid of additives in the preparation of pastes. Thermal treatment of the green bodies, obtained by robocasting of the paste, led to cohesive single-phase YAG ceramics. Manufacturing ceramic pieces by additive methods will allow shaping complex forms, while the single step conversion/consolidation would simplify the technological process, reducing global energy costs. Since YAG possesses high strength and good creep behavior at high temperatures, these refractory pieces could replace the metal alloys used in turbine blades for deep space exploration. Structural, thermal and chemical characterizations were performed on xerogel powders, pastes, and YAG ceramics.

One-Step Synthesis of Eu3+-Modified Cellulose Acetate Film and Light Conversion Mechanism.

Project description:A CA-Eu(III) complex was synthesized by the coordination reaction of cellulose acetate (CA) and Eu3+ to obtain a CA-Eu light conversion film. This product was then doped with Tb(III) to sensitize the luminescence of Eu3+, which could functionalize the CA film. FTIR and XPS showed that the oxygen atoms in C=O, C-O (O=C-O), and O-H were involved in the complexation with Eu3+ and formed a Eu-O bond. SEM revealed that Eu3+ filled in the pores of the CA film. By changing the experimental conditions, the best fluorescence performance was obtained at the CA: Eu3+ ratio of 3:1 with a reaction time of 65 min. The energy transfer between Tb3+-Eu3+ could be realized by doping Tb3+ to enhance the luminescence of Eu3+. The best fluorescence performance of the CA-Eu-Tb light conversion film was at a Eu3+:Tb3+ ratio of 3:1. Compared with the CA film, the light conversion film has high transparency, high tensile strength, and good flexibility. It can convert the ultraviolet light harmful to plants into red light that is beneficial to photosynthesis. This offers high efficiency and environmental protection in the field of agricultural films.

One-step synthesis of carbon-supported electrocatalysts.

Project description:Cost-efficiency, durability, and reliability of catalysts, as well as their operational lifetime, are the main challenges in chemical energy conversion. Here, we present a novel, one-step approach for the synthesis of Pt/C hybrid material by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD). The platinum loading, degree of oxidation, and the very narrow particle size distribution are precisely adjusted in the Pt/C hybrid material due to the simultaneous deposition of platinum and carbon during the process. The as-synthesized Pt/C hybrid materials are promising electrocatalysts for use in fuel cell applications as they show significantly improved electrochemical long-term stability compared to the industrial standard HiSPEC 4000. The PE-CVD process is furthermore expected to be extendable to the general deposition of metal-containing carbon materials from other commercially available metal acetylacetonate precursors.

One-step synthesis of oxazoline and dihydrooxazine libraries.

Project description:The reactions of 1,2- and 1,3-hydroxyalkyl azides and aldehydes in the presence of Lewis acid result in the one-step construction of oxazolines and dihydrooxazines, respectively. The reaction was adapted to parallel synthesis using a polymer-bound phosphine to scavenge excess hydroxyalkyl azide. Thus, a 60-member library of various disubstituted oxazolines and di- and trisubstituted dihydrooxazines was generated.

One-pot, two-step cascade synthesis of quinazolinotriazolobenzodiazepines.

Project description:An operationally simple, one-pot, two-step cascade method has been developed to afford quinazolino[1,2,3]triazolo[1,4]benzodiazepines. This unique, atom-economical transformation engages five reactive centers (amide, aniline, carbonyl, azide, and alkyne) and employs environmentally benign iodine as a catalyst. The method proceeds via sequential quinazolinone-forming condensation and intramolecular azide-alkyne 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions. Substrate scope, multicomponent examples, and mechanistic insights are discussed.

Conversion of pepsinogen into pepsin is not a one-step process.

Monolithic carbon xerogel with co-continuous hierarchical porosity <i>via</i> one-step, template- and catalyst-free hydrothermal reaction with resorcinol and formaldehyde.

Project description:Monolithic carbon xerogel (MCX) with co-continuous hierarchical porosity was prepared via a one-step, template- and catalyst-free hydrothermal polycondensation reaction with resorcinol (R), formaldehyde (F) and distilled water (W), followed by pyrolysis and CO2 activation. The reaction was carried out in a pressurized Teflon mold at 100 °C for 6 h, while F/R (2.2, 2.4, 2.6, and 2.8) and R/W ratios (40 and 45) were varied to obtain a co-continuous pore structure with interconnected particles. Next, the gels were dried at 60 °C for 36 h and then at 100 °C for 12 h to produce xerogels, which were then subjected to pyrolysis at 900 °C for 2 h and CO2 activation at 1000 °C for 2, 4 or 6 h. A co-continuous pore structure with interconnected particles was observed in gels with F/R = 2.4 and 2.6 at R/W = 40 and with F/R = 2.2 at R/W = 45, but the gel with F/R = 2.4 at R/W = 40 was the only one that showed no crack generation upon 6 h CO2 activation. Thus, this gel was subjected to a N2 sorption study, which resulted in a specific surface area (SSA) of 1418, 2489 and 3418 m2 g-1 at 2, 4 and 6 h activation, respectively. This was attributed to the introduction of micro-pores via activation, which also generated meso- and macro-pores to form hierarchical porosity.

One-step multicomponent synthesis of chiral oxazolinyl-zinc complexes.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Typically, oxazolinyl metal complexes are synthesized in two steps, where the free ligand is prepared by the condensation reaction between a functionalized nitrile and an amino alcohol in the presence of a Lewis or Brønsted acid catalyst, followed by a further reaction with metal salts to obtain the corresponding metal complexes. Very often, the yield afforded by the two-step procedure is not high, and very few oxazolinyl zinc complexes have been prepared by this route. Given that metal-oxazoline complexes often contain Lewis acidic metals, it is conceivable that the two steps may be telescoped. RESULTS:A series of novel chiral organozinc complexes 1-15 were assembled in a single step, All crystalline compounds were fully characterized, including the report of 15 X-ray crystal structures, including a wide structural diversity. CONCLUSIONS:A series of novel chiral organozinc complexes were assembled in a single step, from nitriles, chiral D/L amino alcohols, and a stoichiometric amount of ZnCl2, with moderate to high yields (20-90%).

One-Step Hydrothermal Synthesis of Comb-Like ZnO Nanostructures.

Project description:Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nano-superstructures (NSSs) have attracted intense research interests due to their large surface areas and unique properties. In this work, we report an original approach to synthesize ZnO NSSs in a one-step manner with a hydrothermal method. The crystalline structures and growth mechanism can be understood by surface energy calculations. The reaction kinetics was investigated for the control of the morphology of ZnO NSSs. The critical role of the morphology of Au catalysts in the synthesis of ZnO nanostructures has been demonstrated. Such ZnO NSSs can be fabricated on various rigid and flexible substrates for applications in electronics, solar cells and piezoelectric devices.

One-step synthesis of imidazoles from Asmic (anisylsulfanylmethyl isocyanide).

Project description:Substituted imidazoles are readily prepared by condensing the versatile isocyanide Asmic, anisylsulfanylmethylisocyanide, with nitrogenous π-electrophiles. Deprotonating Asmic with lithium hexamethyldisilazide effectively generates a potent nucleophile that efficiently intercepts nitrile and imine electrophiles to afford imidazoles. In situ cyclization to the imidazole is promoted by the conjugate acid, hexamethyldisilazane, which facilitates the requisite series of proton transfers. The rapid formation of imidazoles and the interchange of the anisylsulfanyl for hydrogen with Raney nickel make the method a valuable route to mono- and disubstituted imidazoles.

One-step templated synthesis of chiral organometallic salicyloxazoline complexes.

Project description:BackgroundThe general approach to the synthesis of metal complexes begins with ligand synthesis, followed by ligand reaction with metal salts to afford organometallic complexes. Our research group first reported a one-pot multicomponent synthesis of chiral oxazolinyl-zinc complexes, in the presence of a large amount of ZnCl2 (0.4-2.6 equiv.), with the yields of some products reaching 90%.ResultsOur prior strategy was extended to use copper, cobalt, nickel, manganese, palladium or platinum salts as the third component. The one-step method used 1.0 equivalent of a metal salt, such as M(OAc)2·nH2O or MCl2·nH2O (M: Cu, Co, Ni, Pd or Pt, n = 1, 2 or 4), as a reagent to generate chiral salicyloxazoline complexes 1-8 in the reaction of 2-cyanophenol with different d- and l-amino alcohols.ConclusionComplexes 1-8 were obtained using a one-pot method with a sequential strategy. The reaction outcome was demonstrated for three-component reactions between metal salts, amino alcohols and 2-hydroxybenzonitrile to afford organometallic complexes in good yields (65-95%).
