Project description:The synergy of sulfonated hydrothermal carbon and microwave (MW) irradiation was applied for the esterification of oleic acid with methanol (MeOH) to produce biodiesel. The effects of temperature, reaction time, ratio of oleic acid to methanol, and catalyst loading were investigated at a fixed MW power of 400 W. The addition of hexane, serving as a co-solvent and separator, was also investigated. The optimum conditions for the proposed process were oleic acid-to-methanol molar ratio of 1:5 and hexane-to-methanol ratio of 0.5 (v/v) in the presence of a 5 wt % catalyst, at 100 °C for 60 min, obtaining a 97% yield of oleic acid methyl ester. The addition of slight amounts of hexane resulted into an eightfold reduction in the amount of MeOH needed to obtain a yield above 90%, which normally required a MeOH-to-oil ratio of 40:1. This proposed novel approach could provide a more cost-effective method for the esterification of oil to produce biodiesel, that is, reactive separation utilizing carbon-based catalysts under MW irradiation.

Project description:Scutellarin (1) has been widely used to treat acute cerebral infarction in clinic, but poor aqueous solubility decreases its bioavailability. Interestingly, scutellarin (1) could be metabolized into scutellarein (2) in vivo. In this study, a sulfonic group was introduced at position C-8 of scutellarein (2) to enhance the aqueous solubility of the obtained derivative (3). DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl)-radical scavenging ability and antithrombic activity were also conducted to determine its bioactivity. The result showed that scutellarein derivate (3) could be a better agent for ischemic cerebrovascular disease treatment.

Project description:DCID (Dichloroimidazolidinedione) 2 is used as a novel coupling reagent for the esterification of carboxylic acids with alcohols at room temperature. The reaction represents the first DCID-promoted esterification under mild conditions with good to excellent yields. Reactions can proceed smoothly with those bearing electron-withdrawing and donating group(s) on the carboxylic acids and benzyl alcohols at ambient temperature. Furthermore, we proposed a plausible mechanism and confirmed it by isolating and characterizing intermediates 3a and 7. The structures of the synthesized compounds were confirmed by comparison of melting points and NMR spectra.

Project description:Dehydrogenative cross-coupling of aldehydes with alcohols as well as dehydrogentive cross-coupling of primary alcohols to produce esters have been developed using a Rh-terpyridine catalyst. The catalyst demonstrates broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance, affording esters highly selectively. The high chemoselectivity of the catalyst stems from its preference for dehydrogenation of benzylic alcohols over aliphatic ones. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that the active catalyst is a dimeric Rh(ii) species, operating via a mechanism involving metal-base-metal cooperativity.

Project description:Historically accessed through two-electron, anionic chemistry, ketones, alcohols, and amines are of foundational importance to the practice of organic synthesis. After placing this work in proper historical context, this Article reports the development, full scope, and a mechanistic picture for a strikingly different way of forging such functional groups. Thus, carboxylic acids, once converted to redox-active esters (RAEs), can be utilized as formally nucleophilic coupling partners with other carboxylic derivatives (to produce ketones), imines (to produce benzylic amines), or aldehydes (to produce alcohols). The reactions are uniformly mild, operationally simple, and, in the case of ketone synthesis, broad in scope (including several applications to the simplification of synthetic problems and to parallel synthesis). Finally, an extensive mechanistic study of the ketone synthesis is performed to trace the elementary steps of the catalytic cycle and provide the end-user with a clear and understandable rationale for the selectivity, role of additives, and underlying driving forces involved.

Project description:We investigated the influence of two anionic surfactants, namely, sodium dodecyl sulfate and sodium decyl sulfate, on acrylamide-based microgels consisting of N-n-propylacrylamide. In this context, the main focus was on the influence of surfactant addition on the size of the microgels. The surfactant was added to the reaction mixture before or during the polymerization at different points in time. Microgels were characterized via photon correlation spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. All results were compared to those for other more common acrylamide-based microgels consisting of N-isopropylacrylamide and N-isopropylmethacrylamide. A significant difference between the three microgels and a strong dependence on the surface activity of the surfactant was found.

Project description:Hypervalent iodine heterocycles represent one of the important classes of hypervalent iodine reagents with many applications in organic synthesis. This paper reports a simple and convenient synthesis of benziodazolones by the reaction of readily available iodobenzamides with m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid in acetonitrile at room temperature. The structure of one of these new iodine heterocycles was confirmed by X-ray analysis. In combination with PPh3 and pyridine, these benziodazolones can smoothly react with alcohols or amines to produce the corresponding esters or amides of 3-chlorobenzoic acid, respectively. It was found that the novel benziodazolone reagent reacts more efficiently than the analogous benziodoxolone reagent in this esterification.

Project description:Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), as two anionic surfactants, have diffused into environments such as surface water and ground water due to extensive and improper use. The effects on the removal performance and microbial community of sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) need to be investigated in the treatment of saline wastewater containing 20 g/L NaCl. The presence of SDS and SDBS could decrease the removal efficiencies of ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus, and the effect of SDS was more significant. The effect of surfactants on the removal mainly occurred during the aeration phase. Adding SDS and SDBS can reduce the content of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). In addition, SDS and SDBS also can reduce the inhibition of high salinity on sludge activity. A total of 16 s of rRNA sequencing analysis showed that the addition of surfactants reduced the diversity of microbial communities; besides, the relative abundance value of the dominant population Proteobacteria increased from 91.66% to 97.12% and 93.48% when SDS and SDBS were added into the system, respectively.

Project description:This study is an attempt to develop a theoretical methodology to elucidate or predict the structural characteristics and the physical properties of an isolated polymeric chain and its crystalline state precisely and quantitatively. To be more specific, conformational characteristics of a biobased and biodegradable polyamide, nylon 4, in the free state have been revealed by not only ab initio molecular orbital calculations on its model compound but also nuclear magnetic resonance experiments for the model and nylon 4. Furthermore, the crystal structure and solid-state properties of nylon 4 have been elucidated by density functional theory calculations with a dispersion force correction under periodic boundary conditions. In the free state, the nylon 4 chain forms intramolecular N-H···O=C hydrogen bonds, which force the polymeric chain into distorted conformations including a number of gauche bonds, whereas nylon 4 crystallizes in the fully extended all-trans structure (α form) that is stabilized by intermolecular N-H···O=C hydrogen bonds. The intermolecular interaction energy (ΔE CP) in the crystal was accurately calculated via a counterpoise (CP) method contrived here to correct the basis set superposition error, and the ultimate crystalline modulus (E b ) in the chain axis (b axis) direction at 0 K was also evaluated theoretically. The results were compared with those obtained from the α and γ crystalline forms of nylon 6, and, consequently, the superiority of nylon 4 to nylon 6 in thermal stability and mechanical properties was indicated: the ΔE CP and E b values are, respectively, -214 cal g-1 and 334 GPa (nylon 4), -191 cal g-1 and 316 GPa (α form of nylon 6), and -184 cal g-1 and 120 GPa (γ form of nylon 6). In conclusion, nylon 4 is expected to be put to practical use as a tough environmentally friendly polyamide.

Project description:Thermoelectric generators based on single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have great potential for use in wearable and skin electronics because of their lightweight and mechanically soft structure. However, the fabrication of air-stable n-type thermoelectric SWCNTs using conventional processes is challenging. Herein, we propose a facile process for fabricating air-stable n-type SWCNT films with anionic surfactants via drop casting followed by heat treatment. We examined different surfactants (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate, Sodium Dodecylbenzene Sulfonate, and Sodium Cholate) and heat-treatment temperatures. The optimal SWCNT film maintained the n-type Seebeck coefficient for 35 days. Moreover, to further extend the n-type Seebeck coefficient maintenance, we periodically reheated the SWCNT film with a surfactant that had returned to the p-type Seebeck coefficient. The reheated film recovered the n-type Seebeck coefficient, and the effect of the reheating treatment lasted for several reheating cycles. Finally, we elucidated a simple mechanism for realizing an air-stable n-type Seebeck coefficient based on spectroscopic analyses of the SWCNT films.
