Project description:Ammonia is an important feedstock for producing fertiliser and is also a potential energy carrier. However, the process currently used for ammonia synthesis, the Haber-Bosch process, consumes a huge amount of energy; therefore the development of new catalysts for synthesising ammonia at a high rate under mild conditions (low temperature and low pressure) is necessary. Here, we show that Ru/La0.5Ce0.5O1.75 pre-reduced at an unusually high temperature (650 °C) catalysed ammonia synthesis at extremely high rates under mild conditions; specifically, at a reaction temperature of 350 °C, the rates were 13.4, 31.3, and 44.4 mmol g-1 h-1 at 0.1, 1.0, and 3.0 MPa, respectively. Kinetic analysis revealed that this catalyst is free of hydrogen poisoning under the conditions tested. Electron energy loss spectroscopy combined with O2 absorption capacity measurements revealed that the reduced catalyst consisted of fine Ru particles (mean diameter < 2.0 nm) that were partially covered with partially reduced La0.5Ce0.5O1.75 and were dispersed on a thermostable support. Our results indicate that high-temperature pre-reduction of this catalyst, which consists of Ru supported on a thermostable composite oxide with a cubic fluorite structure and containing reducible cerium, resulted in the formation of many sites that were highly active for N2 reduction by hydrogen.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are playing a key role in developing the next generation of heterogeneous catalysts. In this work, near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) is applied to study in operando the CO oxidation on Pt@MOFs (UiO-67) and Pt@ZrO2 catalysts, revealing the same Pt surface dynamics under the stoichiometric CO/O2 ambient at 3 mbar. Upon the ignition at ca. 200 °C, the signature Pt binding energy (BE) shift towards the lower BE (from 71.8 to 71.2 eV) is observed for all catalysts, confirming metallic Pt nanoparticles (NPs) as the active phase. Additionally, the plug-flow light-off experiments show the superior activity of the Pt@MOFs catalyst in CO oxidation than the control Pt@ZrO2 catalyst with ca. 28 % drop in the T 50% light-off temperature, as well as high stability, due to their sintering-resistance feature. These results provide evidence that the uniqueness of MOFs as the catalyst supports lies in the structural confinement effect.

Project description:Seven mono- and dihydroxycholesterols were prepared by direct C-H oxidation of the cholestane skeleton with a recently developed Ru(Bpga) catalyst (Ru(Bpga) = [RuCl (bpga) (PPh3)] Cl; bpga = 2-(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)-N-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)acetamide)). Due to the high selectivity of the Ru(Bpga) complex for tertiary C-H, the reaction afforded a mixture of 25-, 20-, 17-, and 14-oxygenated cholesterols that could be easily separated by high-performance liquid chromatography. These results suggest that late-stage C-H oxidation could be a viable strategy for preparing candidate metabolites of biologically important molecules.

Project description:Ruthenium nanoparticles stabilized by a hydrotalcite framework (Ru/HTaL) were prepared by following a 2-step procedure comprising a wet-impregnation of ruthenium(III) chloride precatalyst on the surface of HTaL followed by an ammonia-borane (NH3BH3) reduction of precatalyst on the HTaL surface all at room temperature. The characterization of Ru/HTaL was done by using various spectroscopic and visualization methods including ICP-OES, P-XRD, FTIR, 11B NMR, XPS, BFTEM, and HRTEM. The sum of the results gained from these analyses has revealed the formation of well-dispersed and highly crystalline ruthenium nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 1.27 ±0.8 nm on HTaL surface. The catalytic performance of Ru/HTaL in terms of activity, selectivity, and stability was investigated in the methanolysis of ammonia-borane (NH3BH3 , AB), which has been considered as one of the most promising chemical hydrogen storage materials. It was found that Ru/HTaL can catalyse methanolysis of AB effectively with an initial turnover frequency (TOF) value of 392.77 min-1 at conversion (>95%) even at room temperature. Moreover, the catalytic stability tests of Ru/HTaL in AB methanolysis showed that Ru/HTaL acts as a highly stable and reusable heterogeneous catalyst in this reaction by preserving more than 95% of its initial activity even at the 5th recycle.

Project description:We evaluated the activities of well-defined Ru@Pt core-shell nanocatalysts for hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions (HER-HOR) using hanging strips of gas diffusion electrode (GDE) in solution cells. With gas transport limitation alleviated by micro-porous channels in the GDEs, the charge transfer resistances (CTRs) at the hydrogen reversible potential were conveniently determined from linear fit of ohmic-loss-corrected polarization curves. In 1 M HClO4 at 23 °C, a CTR as low as 0.04 Ω cm(-2) was obtained with only 20 μg cm(-2) Pt and 11 μg cm(-2) Ru using the carbon-supported Ru@Pt with 1:1 Ru:Pt atomic ratio. Derived from temperature-dependent CTRs, the activation barrier of the Ru@Pt catalyst for the HER-HOR in acids is 0.2 eV or 19 kJ mol(-1). Using the Ru@Pt catalyst with total metal loadings <50 μg cm(-2) for the HER in proton-exchange-membrane water electrolyzers, we recorded uncompromised activity and durability compared to the baseline established with 3 mg cm(-2) Pt black.

Project description:Selective oxidation of methane is one of the most attractive routes for methane to chemicals. However, mechanistic understanding and avoiding over-oxidation have great challenges because of its very rapid reaction rate. Herein, a capillary micro-reaction system was introduced to monitor the initial stage of methane oxidation over platinum. For the first time, an induction period is observed, during which oxygenated intermediates, such as methanol, acetone, methyl methoxy acetate, etc., are detected. Induction period can be shortened by methane pretreatment at 600°C, which generates highly active species containing unsaturated bonds. Combined these findings and observations of in situ characterizations, the evolution route of methane oxidation over Pt is prosed, i.e., the reaction starts from the formation of initial species containing Pt-C bond, followed by the generation of oxygenated intermediates, and ended with the over-oxidation of the intermediates to CO/CO2.

Project description:C-encapsulated highly pure PtxCoy alloy nanoparticles have been synthesized by an innovative one-step in-situ laser pyrolysis. The obtained X-ray diffraction pattern and transmission electron microscopy images correspond to PtxCoy alloy nanoparticles with average diameters of 2.4 nm and well-established crystalline structure. The synthesized PtxCoy/C catalyst containing 1.5 wt% of PtxCoy nanoparticles can achieve complete CO conversion in the temperature range 125-175°C working at weight hourly space velocities (WHSV) of 30 L h-1g-1. This study shows the first example of bimetallic nanoalloys synthesized by laser pyrolysis and paves the way for a wide variety of potential applications and metal combinations.

Project description:Core-shell structured catalysts, made by placing either a monolayer or a thin layer of a noble metal on relatively cheap core-metal nanoparticles, are fascinating and promising fuel cell catalysts due to their high utilization of noble metals. Here, we report our development of a core-shell structured catalyst, Ru@Pt/C, generated by a novel and facile pulse electrochemical deposition (PED) approach. We demonstrate that compared with a commercial Pt/C catalyst, this novel catalyst achieves over four times higher mass activity towards the anodic oxidation of methanol, and 3.6 times higher mass activity towards the cathodic reduction of oxygen. Importantly, we find that the intrinsic activity of Pt in this Ru@Pt/C catalyst is doubled due to the formation of the core-shell structure. The catalyst also shows superior stability: even after 2000 scans, it still retains up to 90% of the peak current. Our findings demonstrate that this novel PED approach is a promising method for preparing high-performance core-shell catalysts for fuel cell applications.

Project description:Chirality-selective synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been a research goal for the last two decades and is still challenging due to the difficulty in controlling the atomic structure in the one-dimensional material. Here, we develop an optimized approach for controlling the chirality of species by tuning the oxidation degree of Co catalyst. Predominant synthesis of (6,4) SWNTs is realized for the first time. The detailed mechanism is investigated through a systematic experimental study combined with first-principles calculations, revealing that the independent control of tube diameter and chiral angle achieved by changing the binding energy between SWNTs (cap and tube edge) and catalyst causes a drastic transition of chirality of SWNTs from (6,5) to (6,4). Since our approach of independently controlling the diameter and chiral angle can be applied to other chirality species, our results can be useful in achieving the on-demand synthesis of specific-chirality SWNTs.
