Project description:The need to reduce the dependency of chemicals on fossil fuels has recently motivated the adoption of renewable energies in those sectors. In addition, due to a growing population, the treatment and disposition of residual biomass from agricultural processes, such as sugar cane and orange bagasse, or even from human waste, such as sewage sludge, will be a challenge for the next generation. These residual biomasses can be an attractive alternative for the production of environmentally friendly fuels and make the economy more circular and efficient. However, these raw materials have been hitherto widely used as fuel for boilers or disposed of in sanitary landfills, losing their capacity to generate other by-products in addition to contributing to the emissions of gases that promote global warming. For this reason, this work analyzes and optimizes the biomass-based routes of biochemical production (namely, hydrogen and ammonia) using the gasification of residual biomasses. Moreover, the capture of biogenic CO2 aims to reduce the environmental burden, leading to negative emissions in the overall energy system. In this context, the chemical plants were designed, modeled, and simulated using Aspen plus™ software. The energy integration and optimization were performed using the OSMOSE Lua Platform. The exergy destruction, exergy efficiency, and general balance of the CO2 emissions were evaluated. As a result, the irreversibility generated by the gasification unit has a relevant influence on the exergy efficiency of the entire plant. On the other hand, an overall negative emission balance of -5.95 kgCO2/kgH2 in the hydrogen production route and -1.615 kgCO2/kgNH3 in the ammonia production route can be achieved, thus removing from the atmosphere 0.901 tCO2/tbiomass and 1.096 tCO2/tbiomass, respectively.

Project description:Biomass furfural-like compounds are chemicals that cannot be extracted from fossil materials, through which a large number of fine chemicals and fuel additives can be opened up, but one big efficiency problem during the transformation is the accumulation of oligomers. Here, we propose a novel and efficient Ru-Mo bimetallic catalyst for selective hydrogenation-rearrangement of furfural-like compounds. The result showed that an unprecedented rearrangement product selectivity of 89.1% to cyclopentanol was achieved under an optimized reaction condition over a 1%Ru-2.5%Mo/CNT catalyst reduced at 600°C. Subsequent characterization suggested that the catalyst presented with weak acidity and strong hydrogenation activity for the reaction, which not only ensures the smooth hydrogenation-rearrangement reaction but also inhibits the accumulation of furan polymers. These findings provide a convenient strategy to tune the catalytic performance of Mo-based catalysts by controlling the reduction and carburization conditions, which appear to be versatile for the rearrangement of furans and similar compounds.

Project description:A series of supported alkali metal salts were investigated as catalysts to produce propylene oxide (PO) from biomass-derived 1,2-propanediol via dehydrative epoxidation in a solid-gas reaction system. The effects of supports, cations, and anions in the alkali metal salts and calcination temperature were investigated by X-ray diffraction and CO2-temperature-programmed desorption. The results indicate the catalysts with relative mild basicity having higher yields of PO. The highest yield of PO is 58.2% from reactions at 400 °C at an atmospheric pressure over KNO3/SiO2. In addition, the catalyst could be reused after calcination in air at 550 °C.

Project description:The energy performance and emissions (carbon monoxide and total suspended particulate matter) of a biomass gasification-based cookstove under a modified water boiling test (WBT 4.2.3 protocol) were characterized here. The controllable process parameters analyzed were the biomass bulk density (pellets-WP and chips-WCH) and the combustion-air/gasification-air ratio (2.8, 3.0, and 3.2). Moreover, a design parameter of the cookstove was analyzed through two combustion chamber designs (combustion chambers 1 and 2). The cookstove was characterized in detail considering the complete cookstove (control volume 1), the combustion chamber (control volume 2), and the gasification process (control volume 3). The cookstove reached an average efficiency of 25.2% for pellets and 24.1% for chips. The best behavior for the cookstove was achieved when pellets were used, which is attributed to their higher bulk density and to the fact that during their gasification process, the biochar yield was 12% higher, while the biomass consumption decreased by 16% compared to the chips. The carbon monoxide specific emissions were 2.78 g/MJd for pellets and 2.75 g/MJd for chips. On average, the cookstove released total suspended particulate matter between 74.11 and 122.70 mg/MJd. The cookstove low emissions are ascribed to the proper combustion air flow and the combustion chamber design, which favored the mixing between producer gas and combustion air.

Project description:Sorption-enhanced gasification has been shown as a viable low-carbon alternative to conventional gasification, as it enables simultaneous gasification with in-situ CO2 capture to enhance the production of H2. CaO-based sorbents have been a preferred choice due to their low cost and wide availability. This work assessed the technical and economic viability of sorption-enhanced gasification using natural limestone, doped limestone with seawater and dolomite. The techno-economic performance of the sorption-enhanced gasification using different sorbents was compared with that of conventional gasification. Regarding the thermodynamic performance, dolomite presented the worst performance (46.0% of H2 production efficiency), whereas doped limestone presented the highest H2 production efficiency (50.0%). The use of dolomite also resulted in the highest levelised cost of hydrogen (5.4 €/kg against 5.0 €/kg when limestone is used as sorbent), which translates into a CO2 avoided cost ranging between 114.9 €/tCO2 (natural limestone) and 130.4 €/tCO2 (dolomite). Although doped limestone has shown a CO2 avoided cost of 117.7 €/tCO2, this can be reduced if the production cost of doped limestone is lower than 42.6 €/t. The production costs of new sorbents for CO2 capture and H2 production need to be similar to that of natural limestone to become an attractive alternative to natural limestone.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s13399-022-02926-y.

Project description:Modern technologies transform biomass into commodity chemicals, biofuels, and solid charcoal, making it appear as a renewable resource rather than organic waste. The effectiveness of Mo, Fe, Co, and Ni metal catalysts was investigated during the gasification of lignocellulosic pinewood. The primary goal was to compare the performance of iron and nickel catalysts in the low- and high-pressure production of syngas from pinewood. This is the first study that has reported high-pressure gasification of pinewood without the use of an external gasifying agent, producing syngas containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide along with considerable amounts of methane with or without a catalyst. Also, the same gasification at low pressures was compared. In this study, the iron catalyst produces syngas more efficiently at higher pressure and 800 °C, and contains 43 mol % H2, 22 mol % CO2, 26 mol % CH4, and 8 mol % CO in comparison to the nickel catalyst. High pressure produces a large amount of methane too. The nickel catalyst produces higher syngas at low pressure and 850 °C, and contains 55 mol % H2, 9 mol % CO2, 5 mol % CH4, and 30 mol % CO. Low-pressure gasification produces less amounts of CH4 and CO2. Also, the H2/CO ratio is ∼1.81 using the nickel catalyst at low pressures, which is good for utilizing syngas as a feedstock. These results highlight the importance of catalyst selection, reactor configuration, and operating circumstances in adjusting gasification product composition. The study's findings provide information about optimizing syngas production from pinewood, which is critical for the development of sustainable and efficient energy conversion technologies.

Project description:Active phase loss mechanisms from Ru/AC catalysts were studied in continuous supercritical water gasification (SCWG) for the first time by analysing the Ru content in process water with low limit-of-detection time-resolved ICP-MS. Ru loss was investigated alongside the activity of commercial and in-house Ru-based catalysts, showing very low Ru loss rates compared to Ru/metal-oxides (0.2-1.2 vs. 10-24 μg gRu -1 h-1, respectively). Furthermore, AC-supported Ru catalysts showed superior long-term SCWG activity to their oxide-based analogues. The impact on Ru loss of several parameters relevant for catalytic SCWG (temperature, feed concentration or feed rate) was also studied and was shown to have no effect on the Ru concentration in the process water, as it systematically stabilised to 0.01-0.2 μgRu L-1 for Ru/AC. Looking into the type of Ru loss in steady-state operation, time-resolved ICP-MS confirmed a high probability of finding Ru in the ionic form, suggesting that leaching is the main steady-state Ru loss mechanism. In non-steady-state operation, abrupt changes in the pressure and flow rate induced important Ru losses, which were assigned to catalyst fragments. This is directly linked to irreversible mechanical damage to the catalyst. Taking the different observations into consideration, the following Ru loss mechanisms are suggested: 1) constant Ru dissolution (leaching) until solubility equilibrium is reached; 2) minor nanoparticle uncoupling from the support (both at steady state); 3) support disintegration leading to the loss of larger amounts of Ru in the form of catalyst fragments (abrupt feed rate or pressure variations). The very low Ru concentrations detected in process water at steady state (0.01-0.2 μgRu L-1) are close to the thermodynamic equilibrium and indicated that leaching did not contribute to Ru/AC deactivation in SCWG.

Project description:In this article, supercritical water gasification of biocrude at different conditions was performed and compared to each other. Three scenarios were considered while treating biocrude originating from cattle manure (CM) and corn husk (CH), namely, uncatalyzed feedstock, catalyzed with 10% Ni-0.08% Ru/Al2O3 and finally catalyzed with 10% Ni-0.08% Ru/Al2O3-ZrO2. It was found that 10% Ni-0.08% Ru/Al2O3-ZrO2 has performed significantly better than the other two scenarios over the 5 hour run time with a 193 and 187% higher hydrogen yield compared to the uncatalyzed and 10% Ni-0.08% Ru/Al2O3 catalyzed scenarios, respectively. Compared to CM gasification in the presence of a 10% Ni-0.08% Ru/Al2O3-ZrO2 catalyst, the catalyst got deactivated because of the high phenol and furan content in the corn husk biocrude, therefore hydrogen yield performance fell significantly. It was observed that the carbon gasification efficiency of the biocrude was independent of temperature. In terms of carbon conversion, the equilibrium conditions for the biocrude considered were attained at lower temperature. A mechanistic model based on the Eley-Rideal method was devised and tested against the obtained data. The dissociation of adsorbed oxygenated hydrocarbon is found to be the rate-determining step with an average absolute deviation of 3.55%.

Project description:Biomass char produced from pyrolysis processes is of great interest to be utilized as renewable solid fuels or materials. Forest byproducts and agricultural wastes are low-cost and sustainable biomass feedstocks. These biomasses generally contain high amounts of ash-forming elements, generally leading to high char reactivity. This study elaborates in detail how chemical and physical properties affect CO2 gasification rates of high-ash biomass char, and it also targets the interactions between these properties. Char produced from pine bark, forest residue, and corncobs (particle size 4-30 mm) were included, and all contained different relative compositions of ash-forming elements. Acid leaching was applied to further investigate the influence of inorganic elements in these biomasses. The char properties relevant to the gasification rate were analyzed, that is, elemental composition, specific surface area, and carbon structure. Gasification rates were measured at an isothermal condition of 800 °C with 20% (vol.) of CO2 in N2. The results showed that the inorganic content, particularly K, had a stronger effect on gasification reactivity than specific surface area and aromatic cluster size of the char. At the gasification condition utilized in this study, K could volatilize and mobilize through the char surface, resulting in high gasification reactivity. Meanwhile, the mobilization of Ca did not occur at the low temperature applied, thus resulting in its low catalytic effect. This implies that the dispersion of these inorganic elements through char particles is an important reason behind their catalytic activity. Upon leaching by diluted acetic acid, the K content of these biomasses substantially decreased, while most of the Ca remained in the biomasses. With a low K content in leached biomass char, char reactivity was determined by the active carbon surface area.

Project description:The development of a circular economy is a key target to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and create more sustainable processes. Concerning hydrogen as an energy vector, the use of liquid organic hydrogen carriers is a promising strategy, but most of them present limitations for hydrogen release, such as harsh reaction conditions, poor recyclability, and low-value byproducts. Herein, we present a novel sustainable methodology to produce value-added silicon precursors and concomitant hydrogen via dehydrogenative coupling by using an air- and water-stable cobalt-based catalyst synthesized from cheap and commercially available starting materials. This methodology is applied to the one-pot synthesis of a wide range of alkoxy-substituted silanes using different hydrosilanes and terminal alkenes as reactants in alcohols as green solvents under mild reaction conditions (room temperature and 0.1 mol % cobalt loading). We also demonstrate that the selectivity toward hydrosilylation/hydroalkoxysilylation can be fully controlled by varying the alcohol/water ratio. This implies the development of a circular approach for hydrosilylation/hydroalkoxysilylation reactions, which is unprecedented in this research field up to date. Kinetic and in situ spectroscopic studies (electron paramagnetic resonance, nuclear magnetic resonance, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry), together with density functional theory simulations, further provide a detailed mechanistic picture of the dehydrogenative coupling and subsequent hydrosilylation. Finally, we illustrate the application of our catalytic system in the synthesis of an industrially relevant polymer precursor coupled with the production of green hydrogen on demand.
