Giant negative Poisson's ratio in two-dimensional V-shaped materials.

ABSTRACT: Two-dimensional (2D) auxetic materials with exceptional negative Poisson's ratios (NPR) are drawing increasing interest due to their potential use in medicine, fasteners, tougher composites and many other applications. Improving the auxetic performance of 2D materials is currently crucial. Here, using first-principles calculations, we demonstrated giant in-plane NPRs in MX monolayers (M = Al, Ga, In, Zn, Cd; X = P, As, Sb, S, Se, Te) with a unique V-shaped configuration. Our calculations showed that GaP, GaAs, GaSb, ZnS and ZnTe monolayers exhibit exceptional all-angle in-plane NPRs. Remarkably, the AlP monolayer possesses a giant NPR of -1.779, by far the largest NPR in 2D materials. The NPRs of these MX monolayers are correlated to the highly anisotropic features of the V-shaped geometry. The exotic mechanical properties of the V-shaped MX monolayers provide a new family of 2D auxetic materials, as well as a useful guidance for tuning the NPR of 2D materials.

Negative Poisson's ratio in 1T-type crystalline two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides.

Project description:Materials with a negative Poisson's ratio, also known as auxetic materials, exhibit unusual and counterintuitive mechanical behaviour-becoming fatter in cross-section when stretched. Such behaviour is mostly attributed to some special re-entrant or hinged geometric structures regardless of the chemical composition and electronic structure of a material. Here, using first-principles calculations, we report a class of auxetic single-layer two-dimensional materials, namely, the 1T-type monolayer crystals of groups 6-7 transition-metal dichalcogenides, MX2 (M=Mo, W, Tc, Re; X=S, Se, Te). These materials have a crystal structure distinct from all other known auxetic materials. They exhibit an intrinsic in-plane negative Poisson's ratio, which is dominated by electronic effects. We attribute the occurrence of such auxetic behaviour to the strong coupling between the chalcogen p orbitals and the intermetal t2g-bonding orbitals within the basic triangular pyramid structure unit. The unusual auxetic behaviour in combination with other remarkable properties of monolayer two-dimensional materials could lead to novel multi-functionalities.

Three-Dimensional Polymer Constructs Exhibiting a Tunable Negative Poisson's Ratio.

Project description:Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of a porous polymeric construct (scaffold) quantitatively describe how it supports and transmits external stresses to its surroundings. While Young's modulus is always non-negative and highly tunable in magnitude, Poisson's ratio can, indeed, take on negative values despite the fact that it is non-negative for virtually every naturally occurring and artificial material. In some applications, a construct having a tunable negative Poisson's ratio (an auxetic construct) may be more suitable for supporting the external forces imposed upon it by its environment. Here, three-dimensional polyethylene glycol scaffolds with tunable negative Poisson's ratios are fabricated. Digital micromirror device projection printing (DMD-PP) is used to print single-layer constructs composed of cellular structures (pores) with special geometries, arrangements, and deformation mechanisms. The presence of the unit-cellular structures tunes the magnitude and polarity (positive or negative) of Poisson's ratio. Multilayer constructs are fabricated with DMD-PP by stacking the single-layer constructs with alternating layers of vertical connecting posts. The Poisson's ratios of the single- and multilayer constructs are determined from strain experiments, which show (1) that the Poisson's ratios of the constructs are accurately predicted by analytical deformation models and (2) that no slipping occurrs between layers in the multilayer constructs and the addition of new layers does not affect Poisson's ratio.

Dimpled elastic sheets: a new class of non-porous negative Poisson's ratio materials.

Project description:In this study, we report a novel periodic material with negative Poisson's ratio (also called auxetic materials) fabricated by denting spherical dimples in an elastic flat sheet. While previously reported auxetic materials are either porous or comprise at least two phases, the material proposed here is non-porous and made of a homogeneous elastic sheet. Importantly, the auxetic behavior is induced by a novel mechanism which exploits the out-of-plane deformation of the spherical dimples. Through a combination of experiments and numerical analyses, we demonstrate the robustness of the proposed concept, paving the way for developing a new class of auxetic materials that significantly expand their design space and possible applications.

Metal [100] Nanowires with Negative Poisson's Ratio.

Project description:When materials are under stretching, occurrence of lateral contraction of materials is commonly observed. This is because Poisson's ratio, the quantity describes the relationship between a lateral strain and applied strain, is positive for nearly all materials. There are some reported structures and materials having negative Poisson's ratio. However, most of them are at macroscale, and reentrant structures and rigid rotating units are the main mechanisms for their negative Poisson's ratio behavior. Here, with numerical and theoretical evidence, we show that metal [100] nanowires with asymmetric cross-sections such as rectangle or ellipse can exhibit negative Poisson's ratio behavior. Furthermore, the negative Poisson's ratio behavior can be further improved by introducing a hole inside the asymmetric nanowires. We show that the surface effect inducing the asymmetric stresses inside the nanowires is a main origin of the superior property.

A Tubular Biomaterial Construct Exhibiting a Negative Poisson's Ratio.

Project description:Developing functional small-diameter vascular grafts is an important objective in tissue engineering research. In this study, we address the problem of compliance mismatch by designing and developing a 3D tubular construct that has a negative Poisson's ratio ?xy (NPR). NPR constructs have the unique ability to expand transversely when pulled axially, thereby resulting in a highly-compliant tubular construct. In this work, we used projection stereolithography to 3D-print a planar NPR sheet composed of photosensitive poly(ethylene) glycol diacrylate biomaterial. We used a step-lithography exposure and a stitch process to scale up the projection printing process, and used the cut-missing rib unit design to develop a centimeter-scale NPR sheet, which was rolled up to form a tubular construct. The constructs had Poisson's ratios of -0.6 ? ?xy ? -0.1. The NPR construct also supports higher cellular adhesion than does the construct that has positive ?xy. Our NPR design offers a significant advance in the development of highly-compliant vascular grafts.

Tunable Negative Poisson's Ratio in Van der Waals Superlattice.

Project description:Negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) materials are functional and mechanical metamaterials that shrink (expand) longitudinally after being compressed (stretched) laterally. By using first-principles calculations, we found that Poisson's ratio can be tuned from near zero to negative by different stacking modes in van der Waals (vdW) graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (G/h-BN) superlattice. We attribute the NPR effect to the interaction of p z orbitals between the interfacial layers. Furthermore, a parameter calculated by analyzing the electronic band structure, namely, distance-dependent hopping integral, is used to describe the intensity of this interaction. We believe that this mechanism is not only applicable to G/h-BN superlattice but can also explain and predict the NPR effect in other vdW layered superlattices. Therefore, the NPR phenomenon, which was relatively rare in 3D and 2D materials, can be realized in the vdW superlattices by different stacking orders. The combinations of tunable NPRs with the excellent electrical/optical properties of 2D vdW superlattices will pave a novel avenue to a wide range of multifunctional applications.

Negative Poisson's ratio in 2D life-boat structured crystals.

Project description:Two-dimensional auxetic materials with negative Poisson's ratio expand in response to a tensile strain in cross-section. Such counter-intuitive behaviours have been mainly ascribed to concave structures with ideal rigid ball-stick models. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we systematically analyze the mechanical behaviours of three life-boat structured two-dimensional (2D) materials and report two new auxetic materials: δ-arsenic and δ-graphane. The calculated Poisson's ratio values are correlated with Young's modulus, cohesive energy, and valence shell electron pair repulsion of isostructures. Combining with previous research, we provide a self-consistent explanation of the origin of the 2D in-plane negative Poisson's ratio and an algorithmic route to discover new auxetic materials by comparing the energy restored in bond rotation and stretch.

The Temperature-Sensitive Anisotropic Negative Poisson's Ratio of Carbon Honeycomb.

Project description:We report that carbon honeycomb, a new three-dimension carbon allotrope, exhibits large negative Poisson's ratio, as large as -0.32, in tensile revealed via molecular dynamics simulations. The Poisson's ratio of carbon honeycomb is anisotropic, and sensitive to temperature. The carbon honeycomb has phase transformation from normal to auxetic by tensile, along both zigzag and armchair directions. The critical strain for the normal-auxetic transition along the cell-axis direction reduces with respect to an increase in temperature. Combined with high strength of 50 GPa, such a unique and adjustable negative Poisson ratio suggests broad engineering applications of carbon honeycomb.

A Three-dimensional Polymer Scaffolding Material Exhibiting a Zero Poisson's Ratio.

Project description:Poisson's ratio describes the degree to which a material contracts (expands) transversally when axially strained. A material with a zero Poisson's ratio does not transversally deform in response to an axial strain (stretching). In tissue engineering applications, scaffolding having a zero Poisson's ratio (ZPR) may be more suitable for emulating the behavior of native tissues and accommodating and transmitting forces to the host tissue site during wound healing (or tissue regrowth). For example, scaffolding with a zero Poisson's ratio may be beneficial in the engineering of cartilage, ligament, corneal, and brain tissues, which are known to possess Poisson's ratios of nearly zero. Here, we report a 3D biomaterial constructed from polyethylene glycol (PEG) exhibiting in-plane Poisson's ratios of zero for large values of axial strain. We use digital micro-mirror device projection printing (DMD-PP) to create single- and double-layer scaffolds composed of semi re-entrant pores whose arrangement and deformation mechanisms contribute the zero Poisson's ratio. Strain experiments prove the zero Poisson's behavior of the scaffolds and that the addition of layers does not change the Poisson's ratio. Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) cultured on biomaterials with zero Poisson's ratio demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing these novel materials for biological applications which require little to no transverse deformations resulting from axial strains. Techniques used in this work allow Poisson's ratio to be both scale-independent and independent of the choice of strut material for strains in the elastic regime, and therefore ZPR behavior can be imparted to a variety of photocurable biomaterial.

Hierarchical Fibers with a Negative Poisson's Ratio for Tougher Composites.

Project description:In this paper, a new kind of hierarchical tube with a negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) is proposed. The first level tube is constructed by rolling up an auxetic hexagonal honeycomb. Then, the second level tube is produced by substituting the arm of the auxetic sheet with the first level tube and rolling it up. The Nth ( ) level tube can be built recursively. Based on the Euler beam theory, the equivalent elastic parameters of the NPR hierarchical tubes under small deformations are derived. Under longitudinal axial tension, instead of shrinking, all levels of the NPR hierarchical tubes expand in the transverse direction. Using these kinds of auxetic tubes as reinforced fibers in composite materials would result in a higher resistance to fiber pullout. Thus, this paper provides a new strategy for the design of fiber reinforced hierarchical bio-inspired composites with a superior pull-out mechanism, strength and toughness. An application with super carbon nanotubes concludes the paper.
