ABSTRACT: The title carbonate hydrate, Cs₂Mg₄(CO₃)₅·10H₂O, was crystallized at room temperature out of aqueous solutions containing caesium bicarbonate and magnesium nitrate. Its monoclinic crystal structure (P2₁/n) consists of double chains of composition ¹ _∞[Mg(H₂O)_2/1(CO₃)_3/3], isolated [Mg(H₂O)(CO₃)₂]^2- units, two crystallographically distinct Cs⁺ ions and a free water mol-ecule. The crystal under investigation was twinned by reticular pseudomerohedry.

Crystal Structure of BaCa(CO3)2 Alstonite Carbonate and Its Phase Stability upon Compression.

Project description:New single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the crystal chemistry of the CaO-BaO-CO2 system is more complex than previously thought. We characterized the BaCa(CO3)2 alstonite structure at ambient conditions, which differs from the recently reported crystal structure of this mineral in the stacking of the carbonate groups. This structural change entails the existence of different cation coordination environments. The structural behavior of alstonite at high pressures was studied using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data and ab initio calculations up to 19 and 50 GPa, respectively. According to the experiments, above 9 GPa, the alstonite structure distorts into a monoclinic C2 phase derived from the initial trigonal structure. This is consistent with the appearance of imaginary frequencies and geometry relaxation in DFT calculations. Moreover, calculations predict a second phase transition at 24 GPa, which would cause the increase in the coordination number of Ba atoms from 10 to 11 and 12. We determined the equation of state of alstonite (V 0 = 1608(2) Å3, B 0 = 60(3) GPa, B'0 = 4.4(8) from experimental data) and analyzed the evolution of the polyhedral units under compression. The crystal chemistry of alstonite was compared to that of other carbonates and the relative stability of all known BaCa(CO3)2 polymorphs was investigated.

Dicaesium hexa-mercury hepta-sulfide.

Project description:The title compound, Cs(2)Hg(6)S(7), crystallizes in a new structure type that is closely related to that of K(2)Zn(6)O(7). The structure comprises a three-dimensional mercury sulfide network that is composed of channels. These channels, which are along [001], are of two different diameters. The crystal structure contains one Cs, two Hg, and three S atoms in the asymmetric unit. The Cs, one Hg, and one S atom are at sites of symmetry m, whereas a second S atom is at a site of symmetry 2mm. The Hg atoms are bound to the S atoms in both three- and four-coordinate geometries. The caesium cations occupy the central spaces of the larger diameter channels and exhibit a coordination number of 7.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Cs(2)(C(2)N(10))](n), comprises a Cs(+) cation, and one-half of a 5,5'-diazenediylditetra-zolide anion. The Cs(+) cation is six-coordinated by N atoms from six 5,5'-diazenediylditetra-zolide ligands. Each 5,5'-diazenediylditetra-zolide ligand is surrounded by 12 Cs(+) cations, coordinating through ten N atoms. The Cs(+) cations are arranged in a chain along the a-axis direction with a Cs⋯Cs separation of 4.4393 (10) Å. Such coordination leads to the formation of the three-dimensional framework.

Project description:The anion of the title complex, Cs(2)[PuCl(4)O(2)], adopts a pseudo-octa-hedral geometry (2/m crystallographic site symmetry) with two plutonyl oxide ligands in axial sites and four chloride ligands occupying the equatorial plane. Charge balance is maintained by two caesium cations per tetra-chlorido-dioxido-plutonate(VI) anion. Principal bond lengths include Pu-O = 1.752 (3) Å and Pu-Cl = 2.6648 (8) Å.

Dicaesium magnesium bis-(dihydrogen phosphate(V)) dihydrate.

Project description:The title compound, Cs(2)Mg(H(2)P(2)O(7))(2)·2H(2)O, is isostructural with the related known isoformular phosphates. The crystal framework consists of corner-sharing MgO(6) and H(2)P(2)O(7) polyhedra, leading to tunnels parallel to the b-axis direction in which Cs(+) ions are located. The H(2)P(2)O(7) unit shows a bent eclipsed conformation. The Mg(2+) ion lies on an inversion center. The water molecules form hydrogen bonds to O atoms of two different dihydrogenphosphate ions, which are further hydrogen bonded to symmetry-equivalent dihydrogenphosphate ions.

Lanthanite-(Nd), Nd2(CO3)3·8H2O.

Project description:Lanthanite-(Nd), ideally Nd2(CO3)3·8H2O [dineodymium(III) tricarbonate octa-hydrate], is a member of the lanthanite mineral group characterized by the general formula REE2(CO3)3·8H2O, where REE is a 10-coordinated rare earth element. Based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction of a natural sample from Mitsukoshi, Hizen-cho, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, Japan, this study presents the first structure determination of lanthanite-(Nd). Its structure is very similar to that of other members of the lanthanite group. It is composed of infinite sheets made up of corner- and edge-sharing of two NdO10-polyhedra (both with site symmetry ..2) and two carbonate triangles (site symmetries ..2 and 1) parallel to the ab plane, and stacked perpendicular to c. These layers are linked to one another only through hydrogen bonding involving the water mol-ecules.

Crystal structure of K6[Zn(CO3)4]

Project description:The crystal structure of the title compound comprises a tetracarbonatozincate(II) anion, [Zn(CO3)4]6−, with point-group symmetry 2 where the ZnII atom is surrounded in a distorted tetrahedral manner by four monodentate carbonate groups. The crystal structure of K6[Zn(CO3)4], hexapotassium tetracarbonatozincate(II), comprises four unique potassium cations (two located on a general position, and two on the twofold rotation axis of the space group C2/c) and a [Zn(CO3)4]6− anion. The ZnII atom of the latter is located on the twofold rotation axis and is surrounded in a slightly distorted tetrahedral manner by two pairs of monodentately binding carbonate groups, with Zn—O distances of 1.9554 (18) and 1.9839 (18) Å. Both carbonate groups exhibit a slight deviation from planarity, with the C atom being shifted by 0.008 (2) and 0.006 (3) Å, respectively, from the plane of the three O atoms. The coordination numbers of the potassium cations range from 6 to 8, using a threshold of 3.0 Å for K—O bonding interactions being significant. In the crystal structure, [KOx] polyhedra and [Zn(CO3)4]6− groups share O atoms to build up the framework structure.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, Cs(2)[Co(CH(4)O(6)P(2))(2)(H(2)O)(2)], is comprised of one bidentate methyl-enediphospho-nate ligand and one water mol-ecule which are coordinated to the Co(II) atom, as well as a caesium counter-cation. The Co atom occupies a special position on a crystallographic inversion center. The caesium ion is octa-hedrally coordinated by six O atoms with Cs-O distances ranging from 3.119 (2) to 3.296 (2) Å. A three-dimensional network is formed through O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Direct air capture of CO-2 - topological analysis of the experimental electron density (QTAIM) of the highly insoluble carbonate salt of a 2,6-pyridine-bis(iminoguanidine), (PyBIGH2)(CO3)(H2O)4.

Project description:Chemical bonding and all intermolecular interactions in the highly insoluble carbonate salt of a 2,6-pyridine-bis(iminoguanidine), (PyBIGH2)(CO3)(H2O)4, recently employed in the direct air capture of CO2 via crystallization, have been analyzed within the framework of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) based on the experimental electron density derived from X-ray diffraction data obtained at 20 K. Accurate hydrogen positions were included based on an analogous neutron diffraction study at 100 K. Topological features of the covalent bonds demonstrate the presence of multiple bonds of various orders within the PyBIGH2 2+ cation. Strong hydrogen bonds define ribbons comprising carbonate anions and water molecules. These ribbons are linked to stacks of essentially planar dications via hydrogen bonds from the guanidinium moieties and an additional one to the pyridine nitro-gen. The linking hydrogen bonds are approximately perpendicular to the anion-water ribbons. The observation of these putative interactions provided motivation to characterize them by topological analysis of the total electron density. Thus, all hydrogen bonds have been characterized by the properties of their (3,-1) bond critical points. Weaker interactions between the PyBIGH2 2+ cations have similarly been characterized. Integrated atomic charges are also reported. A small amount of cocrystallized hydroxide ion (∼2%) was also detected in both the X-ray and neutron data, and included in the multipole model for the electron-density refinement. The small amount of additional H+ required for charge balance was not detected in either the X-ray or the neutron data. The results are discussed in the context of the unusually low aqueous solubility of (PyBIGH2)(CO3)(H2O)4 and its ability to sequester atmospheric CO2.
