Electrodeposition of Polyporous Sn-Ni Coating in Deep Eutectic Solvents for Removing Organic Dyes.

ABSTRACT: Materials with a high specific surface area including a porous structure have been widely researched due to the applicability in the adsorption of various organic dyes. However, further application of porous materials is limited by the complicated and expensive preparation process. Herein, a Sn-Ni coating with a polyporous structure is successfully prepared via a simple and high-efficiency electrodeposition approach in deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The prepared Sn-Ni coating exhibits a uniform polyporous structure with a diameter of 15 μm. Furthermore, the coating shows excellent adsorption capacity in the removal of acid grain black organic dyestuff. With the rise of preparation temperature from 85 to 105 °C, the electrochemical active surface area and the ratio of nickel increase, which further enhance dye adsorption capacity.

Tin, Bismuth, and Tin-Bismuth Alloy Electrodeposition from Chlorometalate Salts in Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Project description:The electrodeposition of tin, bismuth, and tin-bismuth alloys from SnII and BiIII chlorometalate salts in the choline chloride/ethylene glycol (1:2 molar ratio) deep eutectic solvent was studied on glassy carbon and gold by cyclic voltammetry, rotating disc voltammetry, and chronoamperometry. The SnII-containing electrolyte showed one voltammetric redox process corresponding to SnII/Sn0. The diffusion coefficient of [SnCl3]-, detected as the dominating species by Raman spectroscopy, was determined from Levich and Cottrell analyses. The BiIII-containing electrolyte showed two voltammetric reduction processes, both attributed to BiIII/Bi0. Dimensionless current/time transients revealed that the electrodeposition of both Sn and Bi on glassy carbon proceeded by 3D-progressive nucleation at a low overpotential and changed to instantaneous at higher overpotentials. The nucleation rate of Bi on glassy carbon was considerably smaller than that of Sn. Elemental Sn and Bi were electrodeposited on Au-coated glass slides from their respective salt solutions, as were Sn-Bi alloys from a 2:1 SnII/BiIII solution. The biphasic Sn-Bi alloys changed from a Bi-rich composition to a Sn-rich composition by making the deposition potential more negative.

Extraction of Illegal Dyes from Red Chili Peppers with Cholinium-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Project description:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as a new kind of green solvents have been used to extract bioactive compounds but there are few applications in extracting chrysoidine dyes. In this study, we developed an ultrasonic-assisted extraction method with choline chloride/hydrogen bond donor (ChCl/HBD) DES for the extraction of chrysoidine G (COG), astrazon orange G (AOG), and astrazon orange R (AOR) in food samples. Some experimental parameters, such as extraction time, raw material/solvent ratio, and temperature, were evaluated and optimized as follows: the ratio of ChCl/HBD, 1 : 2 (v/v); the ratio of sample/DES, 1 : 10 (g/mL); extraction time, 20 min; extraction temperature, 50°C. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection (μg/mL) were 0.10 for COG and 0.06 for AOG and AOR. The relative standard deviations were in the range of 1.2-2.1%. The recoveries of the three dyes were in the range of 80.2-105.0%. By comparing with other commonly used solvents for extracting chrysoidine dyes, the advantages of DESs proved them to be potential extraction solvents for chrysoidine G, astrazon orange G, and astrazon orange R in foods.

High-efficient liquid exfoliation of 2D metal-organic framework using deep-eutectic solvents.

Project description:The exfoliation of bulk two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF) into few-layered nanosheets has attracted much attention recently. In this work, an environmental-friendly route has been developed for layered-MOF (MAMS-1) delamination using deep eutectic solvent (DES), which is more sustainable and efficient alternative than conventional organic solvents for MOF nanosheet preparation. Under sonication condition, DES as solvents, the highest exfoliation rate of MAMS-1 is up to 70% with two host layers via poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) surfactant-assisted method. The presence of tert-butyl exteriors and the atomically thickness endow the MOF nanosheets stable suspension for at least one month. Due to the 2D structure and excellent stability, MAMS-1 nanosheet (MAMS-1-NS) was chosen as a good candidate to encapsulate Eu3+ cations. The obtained Eu3+@MAMS-1-NS acts as a multi-responsive luminescent sensor through fluorescence quenching, and can specifically recognize Fe3+ (LOD = 0.40 μM, KSV = 1.05 × 105 M-l), Hg2+ (LOD = 0.038 μM, KSV = 5.78 × 106 M-l), Cr2O72- (LOD = 0.33 μM, KSV = 1.55 × 105 M-l) and MnO4- (LOD = 0.088 μM, KSV = 4.49 × 105 M-l). Compared with bulk Eu3+@MAMS-1, the sensitivity of Eu3+@MAMS-1-NS is greatly improved owing to its ultrathin nanosheet morphology and highly accessible active sites on the surface.

Recent progress on deep eutectic solvents in biocatalysis.

Project description:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are eutectic mixtures of salts and hydrogen bond donors with melting points low enough to be used as solvents. DESs have proved to be a good alternative to traditional organic solvents and ionic liquids (ILs) in many biocatalytic processes. Apart from the benign characteristics similar to those of ILs (e.g., low volatility, low inflammability and low melting point), DESs have their unique merits of easy preparation and low cost owing to their renewable and available raw materials. To better apply such solvents in green and sustainable chemistry, this review firstly describes some basic properties, mainly the toxicity and biodegradability of DESs. Secondly, it presents several valuable applications of DES as solvent/co-solvent in biocatalytic reactions, such as lipase-catalyzed transesterification and ester hydrolysis reactions. The roles, serving as extractive reagent for an enzymatic product and pretreatment solvent of enzymatic biomass hydrolysis, are also discussed. Further understanding how DESs affect biocatalytic reaction will facilitate the design of novel solvents and contribute to the discovery of new reactions in these solvents.

Removing Acrylic Conformal Coating with Safer Solvents for Re-Manufacturing Electronics.

Project description:Conformal coating is typically composed of polymeric film and is used to protect delicate electronic components such as printed-circuit boards. Without removing conformal coating, it would be difficult to repair these complicated electronics. Methylene chloride, also called dichloromethane (DCM), has a widespread usage in conformal coating stripper products. The high toxicity of DCM increases human health risk when workers are exposed to DCM during the conformal coating removal processes. Therefore, the replacement of DCM would be beneficial to greatly improve the overall safety profile for workers in the electronics and coating industries. This research identified and evaluated alternative chemicals for replacing DCM used in acrylic conformal coating stripping operations. The solubility of an acrylic conformal coating was measured and characterized using Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) theory. Coating dwell time tests using various solvent blends verified the accuracy of the created HSP solubility sphere. A data processing method was also developed to identify and screen potential alternative solvent blends in terms of safety, toxicity, and cost-effectiveness. The identified safer solvent blends were demonstrated to provide equivalent stripping performance as compared to DCM based coating strippers within an acceptable cost range. The results of this research will be of value to other types of conformal coatings, such as silicone and polyurethane, where DCM is commonly used in similar coating stripping operations. By safely removing conformal coating, delicate electronics would be available for re-manufacturing, enabling a circular economy.

Nanostructure in Amphiphile-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Project description:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are an emerging class of modern, often "green" solvents with unique properties. Recently, a deep eutectic system based on amphiphilic surfactant N-alkyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (C12 & C14 sulfobetaine) and (1S)-(+)-10-camphor-sulfonic acid in the molar ratio 1:1.5 has been reported. Nanostructuring can be expected in this DES due to the nature of the components. In this work, we have investigated the native nanostructure in the DES comprising C12-C18 alkyl chain sulfobetaines with camphor sulfonic acid and how it interacts with polar and nonpolar species, water and dodecane, respectively, using small angle neutron scattering. By using contrast variation to highlight the relative position of the solvent components and additives, we can resolve the structure of the solvent and how it changes upon interaction with water and dodecane. Scattering from the neat DES shows structures corresponding to the self-assembly of sulfobetaines; the size of the structure increases as the alkyl chain length of the sulfobetaines increases. Water and dodecane interact, respectively, with the hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties in the DES structure, primarily the sulfobetaine, thereby swelling and solvating the entire structure. The extent of the shift of the peak position, and the swelling, depend on concentration of the additive. The solution phase organization and the interaction of polar and nonpolar species as observed here, have the potential to affect the ordering of inorganic or polymeric materials grown in such solvents, paving new avenues for templating applications.

Designing Inorganic-Organic Dual-Acid Deep Eutectic Solvents for Synergistically Enhanced Extractive and Oxidative Desulfurization.

Project description:Acidic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been considered desirable extractants and catalysts for desulfurization. However, their hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) are usually sole organic acids, which are not conducive to efficient green catalysis. Herein, a novel inorganic-organic dual-acid DES (DADES) was reported for efficient extractive and oxidative desulfurization. Benefiting from the physical interaction among the three components in a DADES, a transparent homogeneous liquid can be obtained even though inorganic acid (boric acid, BA) and organic acid (acetic acid, AA) can be immiscible. Furthermore, the dual-acid HBD can increase the acidity of the DADES and reduce its viscosity, accelerating its mass transfer efficiency and enhancing its catalytic activity. With 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl) as the hydrogen bond acceptor, [Bmim]Cl/BA/0.3AA effectively activated hydrogen peroxide and achieved sulfur removal of 96.6% at 40 °C. Furthermore, the universality of the synergistic effect in various DADESs was confirmed by the modulation of the types of organic acids. This study not only motivates the construction of more intriguing novel DESs based on the DADES concept but also highlights their potential in clean fuel production.

Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents: Properties, Applications, and Perspectives.

Project description:As functional liquid media, natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) species can dissolve natural or synthetic chemicals of low water solubility. Moreover, the special properties of NADES, such as biodegradability and biocompatibility, suggest that they are alternative candidates for concepts and applications involving some organic solvents and ionic liquids. Owing to the growing comprehension of the eutectic mechanisms and the advancing interest in the natural eutectic phenomenon, many NADES applications have been developed in the past several years. However, unlike organic solvents, the basic structural unit of NADES media primarily depends on the intermolecular interactions among their components. This makes NADES matrices readily influenced by various factors, such as water content, temperature, and component ratio and, thus, extends the metabolomic challenge of natural products (NPs). To enhance the understanding of the importance of NADES in biological systems, this review focuses on NADES properties and applications in NP research. The present thorough chronological and statistical analysis of existing report adds to the recognition of the distinctiveness of (NA)DES, involves a discussion of NADES-related observations in NP research, and reportes applications of these eutectic mixtures. The work identifies potential areas for future studies of (NA)DES by evaluating relevant applications, including their use as extraction and chromatographic media as well as their biomedical relevance. The chemical diversity of natural metabolites that generate or participate in NADES formation highlights the growing insight that biosynthetically primordial metabolites (PRIMs) are as essential to the biological function and bioactivity of unrefined natural products as the biosynthetically more highly evolutionary metabolites (HEVOs) that can be isolated from crude mixtures.

Deep Eutectic Solvents for High-Temperature Electrochemical Capacitors.

Project description:This article provides an overview of a deep eutectic mixture based on the application of lithium nitrate (V) and acetamide as an electrolyte in a carbon-based electrochemical capacitor. This type of electrolyte is intended to be applied in devices designed for operation under critical conditions (e. g., extreme temperatures). In contrast to water- and common organic-based formulations, the proposed electrolyte ensures good device performance at 100 °C. To describe the chemistry of the proposed mixture, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry were used. Electrochemical analysis includes the verification of system ageing, self-discharge monitoring, leakage current measuring, and fundamental testing related to determining the specific capacitance or maximum voltage. Additionally, comprehensive analysis of the lithium nitrate salt and organic solvent addition to the operating system was carried out, including the replacement of lithium ions with sodium or potassium.

Catalytic Conversion of Carbohydrates into 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural by Phosphotungstic Acid Encapsulated in MIL-101 (Cr, Sn) Catalyst in Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Project description:Herein, we report the synthesis of bimetal-organic frameworks (BMOFs) with both Brønsted and Lewis acidities, in which phosphotungstic acid (PTA) was encapsulated in BMOFs. It is efficient in converting starch to 5-hydroxymethyl-furfural (HMF) in deep eutectic solvents (DESs) such as choline chloride and formic acid. The highest yield of HMF (37.94%) was obtained using P0.5/BMOFs1.0 to catalyze starch in a mixed solvent system comprising DESs and ethyl acetate (EAC) (v/v; 2:3) at 180 °C and a reaction time of 10 min. Employing a DES as a cocatalyst and solvent reduced the use of organic solvents. The catalyst showed adequate reusability, and the HMF yield only decreased by 2.88% after six cycles of reuse compared with that of the initial catalyst. This study demonstrates the application potential of BMOFs in the conversion of biomass to useful molecules with commercial and/or research value.
