Project description:Removal of chloride from Cp*Ir(glycinato)Cl in noncoordinating solvents with Ag[PF6] or Tl[PF6] leads to the formation of a closed octametallic loop of cations. The same loop also sequesters a number of PF6 - counter anions. This is in contrast with reports that piano-stool complexes with amino acids form only trimetallic [Cp*Ir(aminoacidato)]3 3+ moieties upon creating the cation. Cp*Ir(glycinato)Cl also forms a trimetallic compound as well as a octametallic compound, and the octametallic vs trimetallic formation appears to be dependent on the anion. The synthesis and characterization of the octametallic complex, as well as some monometallic and trimetallic compounds, are reported, including the X-ray crystal structures.

Project description:Photolysis of Re(iPrCp)(CO)2(PF3) in liquid or supercritical Xe yields two new compounds [Re(iPrCp)(CO)2Xe and Re(iPrCp)(CO)(PF3)Xe]. Re(iPrCp)(CO)(PF3)Xe has been characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopies. The compound is an organometallic Xe complex that has been characterized by using NMR spectroscopy and is shown to be longer-lived than other organometallic Xe complexes by IR spectroscopy. 19F, 31P, and 129Xe chemical shifts have been determined. The 129Xe chemical shift of Re(iPrCp)(CO)(PF3)Xe, delta -6,179, is a Xe shift that is significantly shielded, on the order of 1,000 ppm, with respect to free Xe. The coupling constants between coordinated 129Xe and both the 19F and 31P nuclei present have been extracted, confirming the identity of the compound. Observed line widths give a lower limit to the lifetime of the coordinated Xe of 27 ms at 163 K.

Project description:IntroductionRadiographic methods have poor sensitivity for occlusal lesions and by the time the lesions are radiolucent they have typically progressed deep into the dentin. New more sensitive imaging methods are needed to detect occlusal lesions. In this study, cross-polarization optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT) and near-IR imaging were used to image questionable occlusal lesions (QOC's) that were not visible on radiographs but had been scheduled for restoration on 30 test subjects.MethodsNear-IR reflectance and transillumination probes incorporating a high definition InGaAs camera and near-IR broadband light sources were used to acquire images of the lesions before restoration. The reflectance probe utilized cross-polarization and operated at wavelengths from 1,500 to 1,700 nm where there is an increase in water absorption for higher contrast. The transillumination probe was operated at 1,300 nm where the transparency of enamel is highest. Tomographic images (6 × 6 × 7 mm3 ) of the lesions were acquired using a high-speed swept-source CP-OCT system operating at 1,300 nm before and after removal of the suspected lesion.ResultsNear-IR reflectance imaging at 1,500-1,700 nm yielded significantly higher contrast (P < 0.05) of the demineralization in the occlusal grooves compared with visible reflectance imaging. Stains in the occlusal grooves greatly reduced the lesion contrast in the visible range yielding negative values. Only half of the 26 lesions analyzed showed the characteristic surface demineralization and increased reflectivity below the dentinal-enamel junction (DEJ) in 3D OCT images indicative of penetration of the lesion into the dentin.ConclusionThis study demonstrates that near-IR imaging methods have great potential for improving the early diagnosis of occlusal lesions. Project description:Through a rapid screening of Cp*Ir complexes based on a turn-on type fluorescence readout, a [Cp*Ir(dipyrido[3,2-a : 2',3'-c]phenazine)Cl]+ complex was found to catalyze the blue-light promoted dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles under physiological conditions. In the dehydrogenation of tetrahydroisoquinolines, the catalyst preferentially yielded the monodehydrogenated product, accompanying H2O2 generation. We surmise that this mechanism may be reminiscent of flavin-dependent oxidases.

Project description:A series of structurally differentiated α-cationic phospholes containing cyclopropenium, imidazolium, and iminium substituents has been synthesized by reaction of chlorophosphole 1 with the corresponding stable carbenes. Evaluation of the donor properties of these compounds reveals that their strong π-acceptor character is heavily influenced by the nature of the cationic group. The coordination chemistry of these newly prepared ligands towards AuI centers is also described and their unique electronic properties exploited in catalysis. Interestingly, α-cationic phosphole containing catalysts were not only able to accelerate model cycloisomerization reactions, but also to efficiently discriminate between concurrent reaction pathways, avoiding the formation of undesired product mixtures.

Project description:The synthesis of electron-poor mono-, di- and tri(imidazolium)-substituted Cp-ylides is presented and their electronic properties are discussed based on NMR spectroscopy, X-ray structure analyses, electrochemical investigations and DFT calculations as well as by their reactivity toward [Ru(CH3 CN)3 Cp*](PF6 ). With mono- and di(imidazolium)-substituted cyclopentadienides the respective monocationic and dicationic ruthenocences are formed (X-ray), whereas tri(imidazolium) cyclopentadienides are too electron-poor to form the ruthenocenes. Cyclic voltammetric analysis of the ruthenocenes shows reversible oxidation at a potential that increases with every additional electron-withdrawing imidazolium substituent at the Cp ligand by 0.53-0.55 V in an electrolyte based on a weakly coordinating anion. A reversible oxidation can be observed for the free 1,3-disubstituted ligand as well.

Project description:Here, we report multinuclear organometallic molecular wires having (2,5-diethynylthiophene)diyl-Ru(dppe)2 repeating units. Despite the molecular dimensions of 2-4 nm the multinuclear wires show high conductance (up to 10-2 to 10-3 G 0) at the single-molecule level with small attenuation factors (β) as revealed by STM-break junction measurements. The high performance can be attributed to the efficient energy alignment between the Fermi level of the metal electrodes and the HOMO levels of the multinuclear molecular wires as revealed by DFT-NEGF calculations. Electrochemical and DFT studies reveal that the strong Ru-Ru interaction through the bridging ligands raises the HOMO levels to access the Fermi level, leading to high conductance and small β values.

Project description:A novel N,N'-allyl-bridged bisimidazolium salt and a novel dinuclear Ag(I) and a Au(I) NHC complex are reported. Both metallacyclic complexes have a twisted structural shape due to the rigid allylic system and form two different isomers relating to the position of the double bonds. The allyl-group shows photoisomerisation, but no reactivity towards bases for the additional coordination of Pd(II).

Project description:This work reports two new cationic heteroleptic cyclometalated iridium complexes, containing ether derivatives of di(pyridin-2-yl)methanol. The new ligands are based on dipyridin-2-ylmethane and are designed to obtain ether-based intermediates with extended electronic conjugation by insertion of π system such as phenyl, allyl and ethynyl. Different synthetic strategies were employed to introduce these units, as molecular wires, between the dipyridin-2-ylmethane chelating portion and the terminal N-containing functional group, such as amine and carbamide. The corresponding complexes show luminescence in the blue region of the spectrum, lifetimes between 0.6 and 2.1 μs, high quantum yield and good electrochemical behavior. The computational description (DFT) of the electronic structure highlights the key role of the conjugated π systems on optical and electrochemical properties of the final products.

Project description:The excellent contrast ratio, visibility, and advantages in producing thin and light displays let organic light emitting diodes change the paradigm of the display industry. To improve future display technologies, higher electroluminescence efficiency is needed. Herein, the detailed study of the non-radiative decay mechanism employing density functional theory calculations is carried out and a simple, general strategy for the design of the ancillary ligand is formulated. It is shown that steric bulk properly directed towards the phenylisoquinoline ligands can significantly reduce the non-radiative decay rate.
