Project description:We consider fretting wear in elastic frictional contact under influence of oscillations of small amplitude and investigate the question, how wear damage can be influenced by the introduction of material gradients. To achieve a general understanding we restrict our consideration to media with a power-law dependency of the elastic modulus on depth. In this case, a complete analytical solution can be found for the final worn shape. In the limiting case of small fretting oscillations we obtain a simple, closed-form asymptotic solution of the problem. We find that the optimum grading depends on the oscillation amplitude: for large amplitudes, the use of materials with a positive exponent decreases the wear volume whilst for very small amplitudes the use of graded materials with slightly negative exponent is beneficial. Especially interesting is the case of the Gibson-medium which may help avoiding both fretting wear and fretting fatigue.

Project description:We consider multiple-mode fretting wear in a frictional contact of elastic bodies subjected to a small-amplitude oscillation, which may include in-plane and out-of-plane translation, torsion and tilting ("periodic rolling"). While the detailed kinetics of wear depends on the particular loading history and wear mechanism, the final worn shape, under some additional conditions, occurs to be universal for all types and loading and wear mechanisms. This universal form is determined solely by the radius of the permanent stick region and the maximum indentation depth during the loading cycle. We provide experimental evidence for the correctness of the theoretically predicted limiting shape. The existence of the universal limiting shape can be used for designing joints which are resistant to fretting wear.

Project description:The Ti/TiN multi-layer film was prepared on the depleted uranium (DU) substrate by cathodic arc ion plating equipment. The character of multi-layer film was studied by SEM, XRD and AES, revealed that the surface was composed of small compact particle and the cross-section had a multi-layer structure. The fretting wear performance under different frequencies was performed by a MFT-6000 machine with a ball-on-plate configuration. The wear morphology was analyzed by white light interferometer, OM and SEM with an EDX. The result shows the Ti/TiN multi-layer film could greatly improve the fretting wear performance compared to the DU substrate. The fretting wear running and damaged behavior are strongly dependent on the film and test frequency. The fretting region of DU substrate and Ti/TiN multi-layer under low test frequency is gross slip. With the increase of test frequency, the fretting region of Ti/TiN multi-layer change from gross slip to mixed fretting, then to partial slip.

Project description:Fretting wear is the material damage of two contact surfaces caused by micro relative displacement. Its characteristic is that debris is trapped on the contact surfaces. Depending on the material properties, the shapes of the debris, and the dominant wear mechanisms, debris can play different roles that either protect or harm interfaces. Due to the micro scale of the debris, it is difficult to obtain instantaneous information and investigate debris behavior in experiments. The Finite Element Method (FEM) has been used to model the process of fretting wear and calculate contact variables, such as contact stress and relative slip during the fretting wear process. In this research, a 2D fretting wear model with a debris layer was developed to investigate the influence of debris on fretting wear. Effects of different factors such as thickness of the debris layer, Young's modulus of the debris layer, and the time of importing the layer into the FE model were considered in this study. Based on FE results, here we report that: (a) the effect of Young's modulus of the debris layer on the contact pressure is not significant; (b) the contact pressure between the debris layer and the flat specimen decreases with increasing thickness of the layer and (c) by importing the debris layer in different fretting wear cycles, the debris layer shows different roles in the wear process. At the beginning of the wear cycle, the debris layer protects the contact surfaces of the first bodies (cylindrical pad and flat specimen). However, in the final cycle, the wear volumes of the debris layers exhibit slightly higher damage compared to the model without the debris layer in all considered cases.

Project description:A metallurgical zirconium nitride (ZrN) layer was fabricated using glow metallurgy using nitriding with zirconiuming prior treatment of the Ti6Al4V alloy. The microstructure, composition and microhardness of the corresponding layer were studied. The influence of this treatment on fretting wear (FW) and fretting fatigue (FF) behavior of the Ti6Al4V alloy was studied. The composite layer consisted of an 8-μm-thick ZrN compound layer and a 50-μm-thick nitrogen-rich Zr-Ti solid solution layer. The surface microhardness of the composite layer is 1775 HK0.1. A gradient in cross-sectional microhardness distribution exists in the layer. The plasma ZrN metallurgical layer improves the FW resistance of the Ti6Al4V alloy, but reduces the base FF resistance. This occurs because the improvement in surface hardness results in lowering of the toughness and increasing in the notch sensitivity. Compared with shot peening treatment, plasma ZrN metallurgy and shot peening composite treatment improves the FW resistance and enhances the FF resistance of the Ti6Al4V alloy. This is attributed to the introduction of a compressive stress field. The combination of toughness, strength, FW resistance and fatigue resistance enhance the FF resistance for titanium alloy.

Project description:This paper investigates the effect of contact geometry, temperature and displacement amplitude on the fretting behaviour of an aero-turbo oil lubricated cylinder-on-flat contact. To be effective, the lubricant needed both to penetrate the contact and then offer protection. Lubricant penetration into the fretting contact is found to be controlled by two physical parameters, namely (i) the width of the contact that remains covered throughout the fretting test and (ii) the lubricant viscosity. The protection offered by the lubricant (assuming that it has successfully penetrated the contact) is influenced by four physical parameters, namely (i) lubricant viscosity, (ii) traverse velocity, (iii) nominal contact pressure, and (iv) chemical effects. The relationship between the three experimental parameters which were varied in the programme of work (temperature, fretting displacement and cylinder radius) and physical parameters which influence the protection offered by the lubricant film can be competing, and therefore complex wear behaviour is observed. The roles of the various parameters in controlling the wear behaviour are presented in a coherent physical framework.

Project description:Fretting is a significant cause for the failure of orthopedic implants. Currently, since magnesium and its alloys have been developed as promising biodegradable implant materials, the fretting behavior of the Mg alloys is of great research significance. In this study, a Mg-Nd-Zn-Zr alloy (hereafter, denoted as JDBM alloy) was selected as experimental material, and its fretting behaviors were evaluated under 5 N, 10 N and 20 N normal loads with a displacement of 200??m under the frequency of 10?Hz at 37?°C in air and in Hank's solution, respectively. The results indicated that while the friction coefficient decreased with the increment of the normal load, the wear volume of the alloy increased with the increment of the normal load both in air and in Hank's solution. Both the friction coefficients and the wear volume of the fretting in Hank's solution were much lower than those in air environment. The evolution trend of friction coefficients with time had different performance in air environment and the Hank's solution group. Although oxidation occurred during the fretting tests in Hank's solution, the damage of JDBM alloy was still reduced due to the lubrication effects of Hank's solution. Moreover, the addition of Fetal bovine serum (FBS) could act as lubrication and result in the reduction of the fretting damage.

Project description:This paper deals with the Falkner-Skan nonlinear differential equation. An analytic approximate technique, namely, optimal homotopy asymptotic method (OHAM), is employed to propose a procedure to solve a boundary-layer problem. Our method does not depend upon small parameters and provides us with a convenient way to optimally control the convergence of the approximate solutions. The obtained results reveal that this procedure is very effective, simple, and accurate. A very good agreement was found between our approximate results and numerical solutions, which prove that OHAM is very efficient in practice, ensuring a very rapid convergence after only one iteration.

Project description:An analytic solution to enzyme kinetics expressed by the Michaelis-Menten-Monod mathematical framework is presented. The analytic solution describes the implicit problem with the independent variable, normally time, substituted with the concentration of the reaction product. The analytic solution provides the substrate, enzyme, and microbial biomass concentration instantaneously and over all time domains without the use of numerical integration schemes or iterative solvers required to overcome transcendental functions. Experiments of NO2 - nitrification by Candidatus Nitrospira defluvii at temperatures ranging between 10 and 32 °C were used for validation tests with the numerical solution by finite differences and the implicit analytic solution presented here. Results showed that both finite differences and analytic solutions matched the experiments particularly well, with a correlation coefficient greater than 0.99 and residuals smaller than 2.75%.

Project description:Aseptic loosening represents a significant factor contributing to joint replacement failure, primarily associated with diminished bone formation and heightened osteoclast-induced osteolysis. Here, a natural polymer-based injectable hydrogel that encapsulates irisin protein (referred to as I-OG hydrogel) is reported. The hierarchical cross-linked structure of the I-OG hydrogel confers favorable mechanical properties, desirable self-healing ability, and acceptable injectability and, more importantly, sustains continuous release of the protein at the interface between the bone and implant prosthesis. The I-OG hydrogel effectively fills the gap between the titanium pin and bone tissue, successfully inhibiting aseptic loosening induced by titanium particles, which outcome confirms the occurrence of irisin protein's slow-release process and its inhibitory effect on osteolysis. Mechanistically, our in vitro experiments demonstrated that irisin released from the I-OG hydrogel upregulates the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) through integrin αV, while concurrently downregulating the NF-κB (P65) signaling pathway in osteoblasts. These molecular events ultimately promote osteogenic differentiation and inhibit osteoclast activation. Collectively, our findings establish that the I-OG hydrogel effectively counteracts aseptic loosening by resisting osteolysis caused by titanium particles and enhancing periprosthetic bone formation, and offers promising prospects for the treatment of aseptic loosening in prosthetic implants.
