Corrosion and microstructural analysis data for AISI 316L and AISI 347H stainless steels after exposure to a supercritical water environment.

ABSTRACT: This article presents corrosion data and microstructural analysis data of austenitic stainless steels AISI 316L and AISI 347H exposed to supercritical water (25 MPa, 550 °C) with 2000 ppb of dissolved oxygen. The corrosion tests lasted a total of 1200 h but were interrupted at 600 h to allow measurements to be made. The microstructural data have been collected in the grain interior and at grain boundaries of the bulk of the materials and at the superficial oxide layer developed during the corrosion exposure.

A study of bacteria adhesion and microbial corrosion on different stainless steels in environment containing <i>Desulfovibrio vulgaris</i>.

Project description:Stainless steel is an important material used in many applications due to its mechanical strength and corrosion-resistant properties. The high corrosion resistance of stainless steel is provided by the passive film. Different stainless steels have different alloy elements and surface properties which could have a significant influence on bacterial attachment to the surface and thus might result in different microbial corrosion behaviours. In this study, the effect of adhesion of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) on corrosion behaviour in artificial seawater on different stainless steels was investigated. Stainless steel materials used were SS 410, SS 420, SS 316 and DSS 2205 and pure chromium. The contact angle was measured to study the effect of surface properties of materials. Adhesion was measured by counting cells attached to the surface of materials. The corrosion behaviour of the materials was measured by electrochemical testing including measuring open circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic behaviour. The long-term corrosion behaviour of each material was studied after six months of exposure by measuring weight loss and surface analysis with scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Hydrophobicity had a strong effect on bacterial attachment. Alloying elements e.g. nickel also had shown its ability to attract bacteria to adhere on the surface. However, the corrosion rate of different materials is determined not only by bacterial attachment but also by the stability of the passive film which is determined by the alloying elements, such as Mo and Cr. Chromium showed high resistance to corrosion, possibly due to toxicity on bacterial attachment. The nature of bacterial attachment and corrosion behaviour of the materials are discussed.

Datasets on the corrosion behaviour of nanostructured AISI 316 stainless steel treated by SMAT.

Project description:The present paper contains the experimental datasets on the corrosion behaviour of nanostructured AISI 316 stainless steel (SS) through polarization tests in 0.6 M NaCl aqueous solution at room temperature. The nanostructured layers were first obtained through surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) method and the data information on the corrosion behaviour of the nanostructured layer was thereafter collected. Through potentiodynamic polarization tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies, the experimental datasets were obtained to investigate the combined effects of SMAT and low temperature annealing on the corrosion behaviour of 316 SS. The experimental datasets obtained include the open circuit potential (OCP), corrosion current densities, corrosion potential, Nyquist, impedance and phase angle. The datasets provided in this article will be of great help to most aerospace, automobile, and manufacturing industries in determining the actual and practical corrosion behaviour of AISI 316 SS in corrosive and aggressive environment.

Interfacial Chemistry Investigation of Initial Fouling Conditions in Isocyanate Production: The Antifouling Performance of AISI 316L Stainless Steel.

Project description:The fouling of AISI 316L stainless steel during themanufacture of polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI) has been investigated. Studies have been carried out using a laboratory-based rig that simulates the process chemistry of the production plant. A variety of solution concentrations and treatment times have been employed to represent different stages in the production process. Following exposure, steel coupons have been removed and studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The thickness of the fouling layer, determined by XPS, is found to vary inversely with exposure time and solution concentration. This is a result of the solubility of the different pMDI derivatives that have been formed at different stages, and a reaction scheme is developed to explain these inverse relationships. ToF-SIMS indicates the formation of metal chlorides as a result of the initial treatment of the steel in the reaction vessel with hydrogen chloride. Fragment ions characteristic of reacted and unreacted pMDI (at m/z = 106 and 132 au, respectively) were used as an indicator of the degree of reacted isocyanate groups within the fouling layer and show a decrease with increasing exposure time, as a result of the formation of intermediates such as amines, ureas, carbodiimides, and uretonimines. The ToF-SIMS data was also processed by principal component analysis (PCA). This generally reinforced the conclusions reached by XPS and ToF-SIMS but, in addition, gave confidence in the repeatability of the analyses with the repeat data (of four analyses) clustering very tightly in the PCA score plots.

Accelerated corrosion of 316L stainless steel in a simulated oral environment via extracellular electron transfer and acid metabolites of subgingival microbiota.

Project description:316L stainless steel (SS) is widely applied as microimplant anchorage (MIA) due to its excellent mechanical properties. However, the risk that the oral microorganisms can corrode 316L SS is fully neglected. Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of 316L SS is essential to the health and safety of all patients because the accelerated corrosion caused by the oral microbiota can trigger the release of Cr and Ni ions. This study investigated the corrosion behavior and mechanism of subgingival microbiota on 316L SS by 16S rRNA and metagenome sequencing, electrochemical measurements, and surface characterization techniques. Multispecies biofilms were formed by the oral subgingival microbiota in the simulated oral anaerobic environment on 316L SS surfaces, significantly accelerating the corrosion in the form of pitting. The microbiota samples collected from the subjects differed in biofilm compositions, corrosion behaviors, and mechanisms. The oral subgingival microbiota contributed to the accelerated corrosion of 316L SS via acidic metabolites and extracellular electron transfer. Our findings provide a new insight into the underlying mechanisms of oral microbial corrosion and guide the design of oral microbial corrosion-resistant materials.

Corrosion Behavior of AISI 304 Stainless Steel Reinforcements in SCBA-SF Ternary Ecological Concrete Exposed to MgSO4.

Project description:In this study, ternary ecological concrete (TEC) mixtures were produced with partial substitution of the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) by 10%, 20%, and 30% of sugar cane bagasse ash (SCBA) and silica fume (SF); a control mixture (100% OPC) was prepared according to ACI 211.1 standard. The studied TEC specimens were reinforced with AISI 304 stainless steel and AISI 1018 carbon steel rebars. TEC reinforced specimens were immersed in two different electrolytes, a control (DI-water) and 3.5 wt.% MgSO4 solution, for 180 days. The electrochemical corrosion was monitored by corrosion potential (Ecorr) according to ASTM C-876-15 standard, and the linear polarization resistance (LPR) technique using ASTM G59 standard. The Ecorr and current density icorr results show that AISI 304 stainless steel rebars have a high corrosion resistance, with icorr values below 0.1 µA/cm2, which is interpreted as a level of negligible corrosion. The best corrosion performance was found for the TEC mixture made with a 20% addition of blend of sugar cane bagasse ash-silica fume (SCBA-SF) to the OPC.

Electrochemical Polishing of Austenitic Stainless Steels.

Project description:Improvement of the corrosion resistance capability, surface roughness, shining of stainless-steel surface elements after electrochemical polishing (EP) is one of the most important process characteristics. In this paper, the mechanism, obtained parameters, and results were studied on electropolishing of stainless-steel samples based on the review of the literature. The effects of the EP process parameters, especially current density, temperature, time, and the baths used were presented and compared among different studies. The samples made of stainless steel presented in the articles were analysed in terms of, among other things, surface roughness, resistance to corrosion, microhardness, and chemical composition. All results showed that the EP process greatly improved the analysed properties of the stainless-steel surface elements.

Data on environmental sustainable corrosion inhibitor for stainless steel in aggressive environment.

Project description:This data article contains data related to the research article entitled "enhanced corrosion resistance of stainless steel Type 316 in sulphuric acid solution using eco-friendly waste product" (Sanni et al., 2018). In this data article, a comprehensive effect of waste product and optimized process parameter of the inhibitor in 0.5?M H2SO4 solution was presented using weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. The presence of the inhibitor (egg shell powder) influenced corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Inhibition efficiency value of 94.74% was recorded as a result of inhibition of the steel by the ionized molecules of the inhibiting compound of the egg shell powder influencing the redox mechanism reactions responsible for corrosion and surface deterioration.

Atomic-scale decoration for improving the pitting corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steels.

Project description:Stainless steels are susceptible to the localized pitting corrosion that leads to a huge loss to our society. Studies in the past decades confirmed that the pitting events generally originate from the local dissolution in MnS inclusions which are more or less ubiquitous in stainless steels. Although a recent study indicated that endogenous MnCr2O4 nano-octahedra within the MnS medium give rise to local nano-galvanic cells which are responsible for the preferential dissolution of MnS, effective solutions of restraining the cells from viewpoint of electrochemistry are being tantalizingly searched. Here we report such a galvanic corrosion can be greatly resisted via bathing the steels in Cu(2+)-containing solutions. This chemical bath generates Cu(2-δ)S layers on the surfaces of MnS inclusions, invalidating the nano-galvanic cells. Our study provides a low-cost approach via an atomic scale decoration to improve the pitting corrosion resistance of stainless steels in a volume-treated manner.

Effect of Secondary Phase Precipitation on the Corrosion Behavior of Duplex Stainless Steels.

Project description:Duplex stainless steels (DSSs) with austenitic and ferritic phases have been increasingly used for many industrial applications due to their good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance in acidic, caustic and marine environments. However, DSSs are susceptible to intergranular, pitting and stress corrosion in corrosive environments due to the formation of secondary phases. Such phases are induced in DSSs during the fabrication, improper heat treatment, welding process and prolonged exposure to high temperatures during their service lives. These include the precipitation of sigma and chi phases at 700-900 °C and spinodal decomposition of ferritic grains into Cr-rich and Cr-poor phases at 350-550 °C, respectively. This article gives the state-of the-art review on the microstructural evolution of secondary phase formation and their effects on the corrosion behavior of DSSs.
