A dataset of European banks in performance evaluation under uncertainty.

ABSTRACT: The dataset contains financial indicators from the financial statements of 250 banks operating in Europe which are collated for the 2015 accounting year. First, the dataset is split into input and outputs measures. Then the preferred number of inputs and outputs in relation to the total number of data is selected according to the rule of thumb in data envelopment analysis (DEA). The dataset is related to the research article entitled "Robust optimization with nonnegative decision variables: A DEA approach" (Toloo and Mensah, 2018) [1]. The dataset can be used to evaluate the performance of banks and bank efficiency under uncertainty.

Project description:This study presents a data-set on the influence of managerial incentives on bank performance in selected Deposit Money Banks (DMB) in Nigeria. The use of managerial incentives to align interests of the principal and agent is advocated by agency theorists, but the peculiarity of the banking industry in terms of the role of regulation, capital structure, opacity and complexity of its transactions among others presents a different proposition in corporate governance research. The data collected over a longitudinal period between 2006 and 2016, provide information on specific managerial incentives and financial performance measures. Descriptive and inferential statistics such as correlation, and panel regression analysis estimates are presented. When analysed, the data can be a pointer in determining the unique managerial incentives predictors that could enhance a bank׳s performance.

Motor planning flexibly optimizes performance under uncertainty about task goals.

Project description:In an environment full of potential goals, how does the brain determine which movement to execute? Existing theories posit that the motor system prepares for all potential goals by generating several motor plans in parallel. One major line of evidence for such theories is that presenting two competing goals often results in a movement intermediate between them. These intermediate movements are thought to reflect an unintentional averaging of the competing plans. However, normative theories suggest instead that intermediate movements might actually be deliberate, generated because they improve task performance over a random guessing strategy. To test this hypothesis, we vary the benefit of making an intermediate movement by changing movement speed. We find that participants generate intermediate movements only at (slower) speeds where they measurably improve performance. Our findings support the normative view that the motor system selects only a single, flexible motor plan, optimized for uncertain goals.

COVID-19 and lending responses of European banks.

Project description:This paper examines how European banks adjusted lending at the onset of the pandemic depending on their local exposure to the COVID-19 outbreak and capitalization. Using a bank-level COVID-19 exposure measure, we show that higher exposure to COVID-19 led to a relative increase in worse-capitalized banks' loans whereas their better-capitalized peers decreased their lending more. At the same time, only better-capitalized banks experienced a significantly larger increase in their delinquent and restructured loans. These findings are in line with the zombie lending literature that banks with low capital have an incentive to issue more loans during contraction times to help their weaker borrowers so that they can avoid loan loss recognition and write-offs on their capital.

Dataset for WWW landing pages webobject retrieval performance evaluation.

Project description:This dataset describes data obtained from a multi-day World Wide Web (WWW) measurement campaign distributed internationally across multiple Amazon Web Service (AWS) datacentres. The Chrome web browser was controlled by the Selenium framework to make repetitive requests to several popular websites; the resulting webobjects were captured by a proxy server and details about them stored in the provided SQLite3 databases. A Python script is provided to evaluate the webobjects with respect to their configured as well as their actual expiration times, as part of our more detailed analysis that we provide in [1]. Researchers and practitioners can readily employ this dataset in their own research endeavours with little efforts for avenues of inquiry beyond webobject expiration times we described in [1], as we provide additional information about each webobject and each website visit during the measurement campaign time horizon.

A fine resolution dataset of accessibility under different traffic conditions in European cities.

Project description:Urban accessibility and congestion indicators allow us to benchmark cities. If these indicators are also available at a fine resolution, we can compare different neighbourhoods within a city. We present a dataset of different accessibility indicators for all urban areas with more than 250 thousand people in the EU27, the UK, Switzerland and Norway. Each city is analysed by means of a population grid of 500?m by 500?m and represented by a wider area covering both the densely populated urban centre and the commuting zone. To capture congestion, we measure accessibility for each grid cell at different times of the day that correspond to different traffic conditions using the detailed network and congestion information provided by TomTom.

Data on cross-border exposures of 61 largest European banks.

Project description:This article introduces a unique and hand-collected dataset on cross-border exposures of 61 European banks. Getting a complete overview of the cross-border positions of European banks is challenging, as there are no regular reporting standards for banks' foreign exposures split by country. Most studies therefore rely on data on banks' foreign subsidiaries. This however leads to a significant underestimation of banks' cross-border positions. We collect data from annual reports and other public sources for the period 2010-2017 in order to construct a dataset covering the complete cross-border exposures by banks. The dataset is valuable to academic researchers in finance and economics as well as central banks interested in financial globalization. The data are collected at the individual bank-level, and this provides opportunities for researchers aiming to analyse the impact of banks' strategic decisions [1]. Lastly, since the cross-border exposures are split by host country the data can be used in gravity models, since it provides a measure of connectedness between banks and/or countries.

Modelling children ever born using performance evaluation metrics: A dataset.

Project description:Predicting the number of total children ever born in a country is a key component for proper implementation of economic growth policy. Here, performance metrics were used to predict models that appropriately describe the factors that affect children ever born. A comparison of 60% training and 40% validation, 70% training and 30% validation, 80% training and 20% validation also 90% training and 10% validation was performed respectively to examine the three models' behaviours (Poisson regression, Negative Binomial regression and Generalized Poisson regression) with RMSE, R2, MAE and MSE as performance metrics. Although all the three models had almost identical performance evaluation metrics, the Poisson regression was chosen as the most appropriate model because it is the simplest model.

Optimal clustering under uncertainty.

Project description:Classical clustering algorithms typically either lack an underlying probability framework to make them predictive or focus on parameter estimation rather than defining and minimizing a notion of error. Recent work addresses these issues by developing a probabilistic framework based on the theory of random labeled point processes and characterizing a Bayes clusterer that minimizes the number of misclustered points. The Bayes clusterer is analogous to the Bayes classifier. Whereas determining a Bayes classifier requires full knowledge of the feature-label distribution, deriving a Bayes clusterer requires full knowledge of the point process. When uncertain of the point process, one would like to find a robust clusterer that is optimal over the uncertainty, just as one may find optimal robust classifiers with uncertain feature-label distributions. Herein, we derive an optimal robust clusterer by first finding an effective random point process that incorporates all randomness within its own probabilistic structure and from which a Bayes clusterer can be derived that provides an optimal robust clusterer relative to the uncertainty. This is analogous to the use of effective class-conditional distributions in robust classification. After evaluating the performance of robust clusterers in synthetic mixtures of Gaussians models, we apply the framework to granular imaging, where we make use of the asymptotic granulometric moment theory for granular images to relate robust clustering theory to the application.

Motor planning under uncertainty.

Project description:Actions often require the selection of a specific goal amongst a range of possibilities, like when a softball player must precisely position her glove to field a fast-approaching ground ball. Previous studies have suggested that during goal uncertainty the brain prepares for all potential goals in parallel and averages the corresponding motor plans to command an intermediate movement that is progressively refined as additional information becomes available. Although intermediate movements are widely observed, they could instead reflect a neural decision about the single best action choice given the uncertainty present. Here we systematically dissociate these possibilities using novel experimental manipulations and find that when confronted with uncertainty, humans generate a motor plan that optimizes task performance rather than averaging potential motor plans. In addition to accurate predictions of population-averaged changes in motor output, a novel computational model based on this performance-optimization theory accounted for a majority of the variance in individual differences between participants. Our findings resolve a long-standing question about how the brain selects an action to execute during goal uncertainty, providing fundamental insight into motor planning in the nervous system.

Regional free cash flow dataset: An approach to regional performance evaluation.

Project description:This data article provides estimates on the Russian regions' aggregate free cash flow, which is not covered by national statistics of major countries. A proper microeconomic model was adapted to regional level data to derive a synthetic indicator of a regional economy's performance. The data contributes to the set of regional performance measures thus enabling a new look at studies of economic growth and development. Conventional economic growth indicators, such as GDP, fixed capital investment or industrial output, are widely criticized since they can have negative values only in terms of growth rates thus showing no evidence of value creation or deterioration. Our data on regional free cash flow eliminates this drawback.
