Eco-Friendly Syntheses of 2-Substituted Benzoxazoles and 2-Substituted Benzothiazoles from 2-Aminophenols, 2-Aminothiophenols and DMF Derivatives in the Presence of Imidazolium Chloride.

ABSTRACT: A simple, economical and metal-free approach to the synthesis of 2-substituted benzoxazoles and 2-substituted benzothiazoles from 2-aminophenols, 2-aminothiophenols and DMF derivatives, only using imidazolium chloride (50% mmol) as promoter without any other additive, was reported. Various 2-substituted benzoxazoles and 2-substituted benzothiazoles were thus prepared in moderate to excellent yields.

Project description:The use of CeCl3·7H2O as an efficient and eco-friendly promoter for the convenient synthesis of methoximes derived from aromatic aldehydes and ketones, is reported. The transformations entail the use of equimolar amounts of MeONH2·HCl and NaOAc in EtOH at 50°C, and no special precautions are needed with regard to the presence of oxygen. The scope and limitations of the transformation were studied and a reaction mechanism was proposed.

A Simple, Efficient, and Eco-Friendly Method for the Preparation of 3-Substituted-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one Derivatives.

Project description:A simple, cost-effective method under environmentally benign conditions is a very important concept for the preparation of 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one derivatives. The present work describes an efficient and eco-friendly protocol for the synthesis of 2-amino-N-(2-substituted-ethyl)benzamide and 3-substituted-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one derivatives. The novel feature of this protocol is the use of 2-methyl tetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF) as an eco-friendly alternative solvent to tetrahydrofuran (THF) in the first step. In the second step, methanol in the presence of potassium carbonate as a catalyst was used under conventional heating or microwave irradiation, which provided an eco-friendly method to afford the target products in excellent yields and purities. NMR (1H and 13C), elemental analysis, and LC-MS confirmed the structures of all compounds. X-ray crystallography further confirmed the structure of the intermediate 2-amino-N-(2-substituted-ethyl)benzamide 3a. The molecular structure of 3a was monoclinic crystal, with P21/c, a = 13.6879 (11) Å, b = 10.2118 (9) Å, c = 9.7884 (9) Å, ? = 105.068 (7)°, V = 1321.2 (2) Å3, and Z = 4.

Eco-friendly synthesis and antiproliferative evaluation of some oxygen substituted diaryl ketones.

Project description:A broad variety of oxygen-substituted diaryl ketones has been synthesized by solar energy-induced Friedel Crafts acylations of 1,4-benzo- and 1,4-naphthoquinones with benzaldehydes. The in vitro antiproliferative properties of the photoproducts were assessed on prostate (DU-145), bladder (T24) and breast (MCF7) human-derived tumor cell lines and compared to non-tumor mouse fibroblasts (Balb/3T3). Among the tested compounds, it was found that those containing a 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl A-ring, such as 12 and 22 are more active on DU-145, with EC50 values of 1.2 and 5.9 ?M, respectively. By comparing their effects on the three cancer cell lines, the analogue 22 has the best mean selective index (2.4).

Eco-Friendly Synthesis, Crystal Chemistry, and Magnetic Properties of Manganese-Substituted CoFe2O4 Nanoparticles.

Project description:The authors report on the effect of manganese (Mn) substitution on the crystal chemistry, morphology, particle size distribution characteristics, chemical bonding, structure, and magnetic properties of cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by a simple, cost-effective, and eco-friendly one-pot aqueous hydrothermal method. Crystal structure analyses indicate that the Mn(II)-substituted cobalt ferrites, Co1-x Mn x Fe2O4 (CMFO, x = 0.0-0.5), were crystalline with a cubic inverse spinel structure (space group Fd 3 m ). The average crystallite size increases from 8 to 14 nm with increasing Mn(II) content; the crystal growth follows an exponential growth function while the lattice parameters follow Vegard's law. Chemical bonding analyses made using Raman spectroscopic studies further confirm the cubic inverse spinel phase. The relative changes in specific vibrational modes related to octahedral sites as a function of Mn content suggest a gradual change of measure of inversion of the ferrite lattice at nanoscale dimensions. Small-angle X-ray scattering and electron microscopy revealed a narrow particle size distribution with the spherical shape morphology of the CMFO NPs. The zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetic measurements revealed the superparamagnetic behavior of CMFO NPs at room temperature. The sample with x = 0.3 indicates a lower value of blocking temperature (9.16 K) with the improved (maximum) value of saturation magnetization. The results and the structure-composition-property correlation suggest that the economic, eco-friendly hydrothermal approach can be adopted to process superparamagnetic nanostructured magnetic materials at a relatively lower temperature for practical electronic and electromagnetic device applications.

Synthesis and antitumor activity of novel N-substituted carbazole imidazolium salt derivatives.

Project description:A series of novel N-substituted carbazole imidazolium salt derivatives has been prepared and investigated for their cytotoxic activity against five human tumor cell lines by MTS assay. The results indicated that the existence of 5,6-dimethyl-benzimidazole ring, substitution of the imidazolyl-3-position with a 2-bromobenzyl or naphthylacyl group, as well as alkyl chain length between carbazole and imidazole ring were important for the antitumor activity. Compound 61, bearing a 2-bromobenzyl substituent at position-3 of the 5,6-dimethyl-benzimidazole, showed powerful inhibitory activities and was more selective to HL-60, SMMC-7721, MCF-7 and SW480 cell lines with IC50 values 0.51-2.48??M. Mechanism of action studies revealed that this new compound could remarkably induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in SMMC-7721 cells. This work provides alternative novel way for future drug development based on carbazole and imidazolium salt scaffolds.

Green Synthetic Approach: An Efficient Eco-Friendly Tool for Synthesis of Biologically Active Oxadiazole Derivatives.

Project description:Green synthetic protocol refers to the development of processes for the sustainable production of chemicals and materials. For the synthesis of various biologically active compounds, energy-efficient and environmentally benign processes are applied, such as microwave irradiation technology, ultrasound-mediated synthesis, photo-catalysis (ultraviolet, visible and infrared irradiation), molecular sieving, grinding and milling techniques, etc. Thesemethods are considered sustainable technology and become valuable green protocol to synthesize new drug molecules as theyprovidenumerous benefits over conventional synthetic methods.Based on this concept, oxadiazole derivatives are synthesized under microwave irradiation technique to reduce the formation of byproduct so that the product yield can be increased quantitatively in less reaction time. Hence, the synthesis of drug molecules under microwave irradiation follows a green chemistry approach that employs a set of principles to minimize or remove the utilization and production of hazardous toxic materials during the design, manufacture and application of chemical substances.This approach plays a major role in controlling environmental pollution by utilizing safer solvents, catalysts, suitable reaction conditions and thereby increases the atom economy and energy efficiency. Oxadiazole is a five-membered heterocyclic compound that possesses one oxygen and two nitrogen atoms in the ring system.Oxadiazole moiety is drawing considerable interest for the development of new drug candidates with potential therapeutic activities including antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anticonvulsant, anticancer, antimalarial, antitubercular, anti-asthmatic, antidepressant, antidiabetic, antioxidant, antiparkinsonian, analgesic and antiinflammatory, etc. This review focuses on different synthetic approaches of oxadiazole derivatives under microwave heating method and study of their various biological activities.

Perovskite Solar Cells toward Eco-Friendly Printing.

Project description:Eco-friendly printing is important for mass manufacturing of thin-film photovoltaic (PV) devices to preserve human safety and the environment and to reduce energy consumption and capital expense. However, it is challenging for perovskite PVs due to the lack of eco-friendly solvents for ambient fast printing. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time an eco-friendly printing concept for high-performance perovskite solar cells. Both the perovskite and charge transport layers were fabricated from eco-friendly solvents via scalable fast blade coating under ambient conditions. The perovskite dynamic crystallization during blade coating investigated using in situ grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) reveals a long sol-gel window prior to phase transformation and a strong interaction between the precursors and the eco-friendly solvents. The insights enable the achievement of high quality coatings for both the perovskite and charge transport layers by controlling film formation during scalable coating. The excellent optoelectronic properties of these coatings translate to a power conversion efficiency of 18.26% for eco-friendly printed solar cells, which is on par with the conventional devices fabricated via spin coating from toxic solvents under inert atmosphere. The eco-friendly printing paradigm presented in this work paves the way for future green and high-throughput fabrication on an industrial scale for perovskite PVs.
