The neurophysiology of language processing shapes the evolution of grammar: evidence from case marking.

Project description:Do principles of language processing in the brain affect the way grammar evolves over time or is language change just a matter of socio-historical contingency? While the balance of evidence has been ambiguous and controversial, we identify here a neurophysiological constraint on the processing of language that has a systematic effect on the evolution of how noun phrases are marked by case (i.e. by such contrasts as between the English base form she and the object form her). In neurophysiological experiments across diverse languages we found that during processing, participants initially interpret the first base-form noun phrase they hear (e.g. she…) as an agent (which would fit a continuation like … greeted him), even when the sentence later requires the interpretation of a patient role (as in … was greeted). We show that this processing principle is also operative in Hindi, a language where initial base-form noun phrases most commonly denote patients because many agents receive a special case marker ("ergative") and are often left out in discourse. This finding suggests that the principle is species-wide and independent of the structural affordances of specific languages. As such, the principle favors the development and maintenance of case-marking systems that equate base-form cases with agents rather than with patients. We confirm this evolutionary bias by statistical analyses of phylogenetic signals in over 600 languages worldwide, controlling for confounding effects from language contact. Our findings suggest that at least one core property of grammar systematically adapts in its evolution to the neurophysiological conditions of the brain, independently of socio-historical factors. This opens up new avenues for understanding how specific properties of grammar have developed in tight interaction with the biological evolution of our species.

Development of 11 microsatellite loci for an endangered herb, Paraisometrum mileense (Gesneriaceae), in southwest China.

Project description:Microsatellite markers were developed to investigate the genetic diversity and population structure of the endangered species Paraisometrum mileense, as well as its evolutionary history. • Using the Fast Isolation by AFLP of Sequences COntaining repeats (FIASCO) protocol, 11 polymorphic primer sets were obtained in P. mileense. The number of alleles per locus ranged from one to nine with an average 3.8, and the observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0 to 1 and 0 to 0.89, respectively, for the available three populations. • These markers may be useful for further investigation of the conservation genetics of P. mileense.

Water use efficiency in a primary subtropical evergreen forest in Southwest China.

Project description:We calculated water use efficiency (WUE) using measures of gross primary production (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET) from five years of continuous eddy covariance measurements (2009-2013) obtained over a primary subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest in southwestern China. Annual mean WUE exhibited a decreasing trend from 2009 to 2013, varying from ~2.28 to 2.68 g C kg H2O-1. The multiyear average WUE was 2.48 ± 0.17 (mean ± standard deviation) g C kg H2O-1. WUE increased greatly in the driest year (2009), due to a larger decline in ET than in GPP. At the diurnal scale, WUE in the wet season reached 5.1 g C kg H2O-1 in the early morning and 4.6 g C kg H2O-1 in the evening. WUE in the dry season reached 3.1 g C kg H2O-1 in the early morning and 2.7 g C kg H2O-1 in the evening. During the leaf emergence stage, the variation of WUE could be suitably explained by water-related variables (relative humidity (RH), soil water content at 100 cm (SWC_100)), solar radiation and the green index (Sgreen). These results revealed large variation in WUE at different time scales, highlighting the importance of individual site characteristics.

The complete chloroplast genome of Cymbidium serratum (Orchidaceae): a rare and Endangered species endemic to Southwest China.

Project description:Cymbidium serratum is a dominant species in the large orchid family with beautiful flowers, thick petals, and long flowering periods, and has a long history of cultivation in Southwest China. However, its wild resources have been threatened with extinction due to environmental degradation and artificial exploitation. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome of C. serratum was obtained through Illumina sequencing. The size of chloroplast genome of C. serratum is 149,998 bp, including large single-copy (LSC) and small single-copy (SSC) regions over 84,854 bp and 13,926 bp, respectively, and two inverted repeats (IRs) of 25,609 bp. The total GC content was 37.11%. The chloroplast genome contains 129 genes, including 83 protein-coding genes, 8 rRNA genes, and 38 tRNA genes. The maximum-likelihood phylogenetic tree indicated that C. serratum is a sister species with the clade composed of C. faberi and C. goeringii. The complete chloroplast genome of C. serratum will contribute to protecting this highly endangered species, and provide genetic information about genetic diversity and sustainable use.

Longitudinal test-retest neuroimaging data from healthy young adults in southwest China.

Project description:Multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (mMRI) has been widely used to map the structure and function of the human brain, as well as its behavioral associations. However, to date, a large sample with a long-term longitudinal design and a narrow age-span has been lacking for the assessment of test-retest reliability and reproducibility of brain-behavior correlations, as well as the development of novel causal insights into these correlational findings. Here we describe the SLIM dataset, which includes brain and behavioral data across a long-term retest-duration within three and a half years, mMRI scans provided a set of structural, diffusion and resting-state functional MRI images, along with rich samples of behavioral assessments addressed-demographic, cognitive and emotional information. Together with the Consortium for Reliability and Reproducibility (CoRR), the SLIM is expected to accelerate the reproducible sciences of the human brain by providing an open resource for brain-behavior discovery sciences with big-data approaches.

Complete plastid genome of Rhododendron griersonianum, a critically endangered plant with extremely small populations (PSESP) from southwest China.

Project description:The complete plastid genome of Rhododendron griersonianum, a critically endangered plant species with extremely small populations, was obtained using Illumina HiSeq X Ten and ONT PromethION sequencing. The full length of the plastid genome is 206,467 bp with an overall GC content of 35.8%, which encodes 118 unique genes, including 78 protein-coding genes, 36 tRNA and 4 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that all Rhododendron species formed a monophyletic clade. This study provides a valuable reference and will facilitate future studies related to the general characteristics and evolution of plastid genomes in the genus Rhododendron.

Complete chloroplast genome of an endangered endemic tree, handeliodendron bodinieri (levl.) rehder (sapindaceae) from karst forests of southwest China.

Project description:Handeliodendron bodinieri (Sapindaceae) is an endangered monotypic species endemic to the karst forests in southwest China whose populations are now fragmented and the total number of individuals evidently decreased. In this research, we characterized the chloroplast (cp) genome of H. bodinieri using genome skimming. The whole cp genome was 155,291 bp long and comprised 137 genes, including 8 unique rRNAs, 40 tRNAs, and 89 protein-coding genes. The overall guanine-cytosine content of H. bodinieri cp genome was 37.8%. The phylogenetic analysis suggested that H. bodinieri is closely related to the genus Mangifera. This study will be useful for future studies on conservation genetics of this economically important endemic plant.

Effects of verb familiarity on finiteness marking in children with specific language impairment.

Project description:Children with specific language impairment (SLI) have known deficits in the verb lexicon and finiteness marking. This study investigated a potential relationship between these 2 variables in children with SLI and 2 control groups considering predictions from 2 different theoretical perspectives, morphosyntactic versus morphophonological.Children with SLI, age-equivalent, and language-equivalent (LE) control children (n=59) completed an experimental sentence imitation task that generated estimates of children's finiteness accuracy under 2 levels of verb familiarity--familiar real verbs versus unfamiliar real verbs--in clausal sites marked for finiteness. Imitations were coded and analyzed for overall accuracy as well as finiteness marking and verb root imitation accuracy.Statistical comparisons revealed that children with SLI did not differ from LE children and were less accurate than age-equivalent children on all dependent variables: overall imitation, finiteness marking imitation, and verb root imitation accuracy. A significant Group×Condition interaction for finiteness marking revealed lower levels of accuracy on unfamiliar verbs for the SLI and LE groups only.Findings indicate a relationship between verb familiarity and finiteness marking in children with SLI and younger controls and help clarify the roles of morphosyntax, verb lexicon, and morphophonology.
