Strategies for colorectal cancer screening with FOBT

ABSTRACT: Interventions: Medical Device : All participants were randomly allocated into two groups of equal size according to sex, age, and income level : a intervention group using FOBT kit (n=1,798)and a control group using stool container(n=1,798). Each group were devided into two supgroups to approach participants : mailing versus visiting hospital. Mailing of the Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) to increase compliance to colorectal cancer screening and to reduce costs

Project description:Study hypothesis: European Commission Guidelines on cancer prevention recommend to the member states the implementation of colorectal cancer screening programmes based on the Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) every two years in the population 50-70 years old. In Italy, colorectal cancer screening is affected by low compliance. Furthermore the front office activities to give the faecal sampler to the participants are time and cost consuming. A direct mailing strategy of the faecal sampler could increase compliance and could reduce the resource consumption of the front office activities. Primary outcome(s): Compliance to screening at 60 days after mailing (of the FOBT or of the letter).

Screening for Colorectal Cancer in Recipients of Kidney Transplants

Project description:Interventions: 1. Faecal occult blood testing (FOBT). Participants will perform FOBT following enrolment. This involves using a patient kit to sample their own stools for the presence of blood, mailing their testing kit in to a central lab once it is completed. Testing will be conducted once but may involve sampling several stools. 2. Colonoscopy. All participants will also undergo colonoscopy following the completion of FOBT, regardless of the result. This will be performed within a target of 3 months post enrolment. The FLU-FOBT Program in Primary Care Settings Where Disparities Persist

Project description:The investigators overall goals are to adapt, implement, evaluate, and disseminate the FLU-FOBT Program as an integrated nurse-run, primary care-based intervention that can reduce colorectal cancer screening disparities in resource-poor clinical settings. In this program, fecal occult blood tests (FOBT) are provided with influenza vaccinations (FLU) to eligible patients between the ages of 50 and 75 during FLU season. The investigators hypothesis is that the FLU-FOBT Program can be adapted for primary care settings and lead to higher rates of colorectal cancer screening (CRCS).

16S rRNA gene sequence data revealed effects of natural phenylethanoids on gut microbiota.

Project description:The aim of study is to evaluate whether salidroside (S), tyrosol (T) and hydroxytyrosol (H) which are dietary phenylethanoids of natural origins have an influence on reversing gut dysbiosis induced by metabolic syndrome (MetS) mice. C57 BL/6J female mice induced by high fructose diet were established. All mice were adapted to the environment for 7 days with normal diet and sterile drinking water (DW), and randomly divided into 6 groups. Mice in the ND group are fed with ND and treated with normal saline. Other groups were fed with high fructose (HFru) by administration of normal saline, salidroside (S), tyrosol (T) or hydroxytyrosol (H) for 12 weeks by intragastric gavage. Fresh feces from each mouse were collected one days before the end of the experiment and temporarily placed in sterile tubules, and then snap-frozen in liquid nitrogen. Total DNA from stool bacteria was extracted using QIAamp DNA stool mini kit from Qiagen (Germantown, MD, USA) according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Illumina HiSeq sequencing analysis of the DNA samples.16S rRNA gene sequence data further revealed that S, T and H could enhance the diversity of gut microbiota. In general, the abundance of Shigella, Acinetobacter, Lactobacillus, Staphylococcus and Sporosarcina had changed significantly. These findings suggest that S, T and H probably suppress lipid accumulation and to hepatoprotective effect and improve intestinal microflora disorders to attenuate metabolic syndromes.

Increasing Uptake of Colorectal Cancer Screening in Ontario

Project description:The investigators hope to determine whether the addition of an FOBT kit and educational materials to a second mailed invitation compared to a second mailed invitation alone increases use of appropriate screening tests (FOBT for average risk or colonoscopy if increased risk) by eligible persons within 6 months of the second mailing in: (1)Non-responders to an initial mailed CRC screening invitation from their family physician and, (2)Those who responded to the initial mailed CRC screening invitation and are due for repeat screening (i.e., "recall" patients). In addition, the investigators will also explore the impact of the investigators intervention in likely under-screened groups such as those living in more remote areas of the province and those with low socio-economic status as well as assessing the cost-effectiveness of this strategy.

Improving uptake of colorectal cancer screening among primary care attendees

Project description:Interventions: The intervention group will receive a one-off individual intervention delivered in the primary care clinic. The intervention will involve the following: In the waiting room, a research assistant will provide intervention participants with an envelope prior to their GP appointment. The envelope will contain: a) a faecal occult blood test kit with: instructions for completion; pathology request form, and: pre-paid postage to mail the kit for analysis. b) A feedback sheet containing screening recommendations for those at average risk of colorectal cancer (including recommended: age to commence screening; screening test; frequency of testing). The sheet will also include methods to obtain FOBT as well as what to do with the FOBT provided. The research assistant will deliver the survey and for eligible patients will complete the pathology form but will not provide any medical advice or endorse completion of the intervention. The general practitioner will endorse the FOBT during the patient’s appointment. The GP will reinforce the importance of completing the FOBT and recommend the patient complete the FOBT using a script provided by the research team during a pre-study training session. Cells were treated with HeLa exosomes or Hcer exosomes for 48 hours (3 repeat samples for each group) and then RNA of each group was collected.RNAs were sequenced on Proton Sequencers according to Ion PI Sequencing 200 Kit v2.0 (Life Technologies).According to the results,we found a total of 2493 different genes reach to 2 fold difference between two groups.

¡Salud! Por la Vida (SPLV) A Colorectal Screening Promotion Program

Project description:The overall goal of this educational program was to increase colorectal cancer screening (CRCS) in men and women who attend Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) in Puerto Rico. FQHCs, referred to in Puerto Rico as "Clínicas 330", are ideal settings to implement innovative approaches to increase CRCS because they serve primarily low-income patients who typically have lower rates of screening. The goal of this study, is to develop and evaluate the impact of a clinic level intervention on increasing CRCS among low-income Puerto Rican men and women aged 50-75, who have either never been screened for colorectal cancer, or are under-screened according recommended guidelines. To evaluate the delivery of the CRCS education program we used a group randomized controlled trial that provided data to determine the effectiveness of the CRC intervention program compared with usual practice (no intervention).
