OvCaRe formed in late 2000 when a group of Vancouver-based physicians and scientists joined with the common vision of enhancing ovarian cancer research in British Columbia and the explicit goal of improving outcomes for ovariant cancer patients. OvCaRe researchers are a multidisciplicary team, spanning basic to clinical science to allow for a true bench-to-bedside approach. OvCaRe was developed as a collaboration between the BC Cancer Agency, the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Insititute, and Hospital Foundation and BC Cancer Foundation

Project description:Introduction: There is conflicting evidence for the association between antihypertensive medications and colorectal cancer risk, possibly reflecting methodological limitations of previously conducted studies. Here, we aimed to clarify associations between commonly prescribed antihypertensive medication classes and colorectal cancer risk in a large, retrospective, cohort study. Methods: Using linked administrative data between 1996 and 2017 from British Columbia, we identified a cohort of 1,693,297 men and women who were 50 years of age or older, initially cancer-free and nonusers of antihypertensive medications. Medication use was parameterized as ever use, cumulative duration, and cumulative dose. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and associated 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for associations of time-varying medication use [angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs), angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), beta-blockers (BBs), calcium channel blockers (CCBs), and diuretics] with colorectal cancer risk. Results: There were 28,460 incident cases of colorectal cancer identified over the follow-up period (mean = 12.9 years). When medication use was assessed as ever/never, diuretics were associated with increased risk of colorectal cancer (HR 1.08, 95% CI 1.04-1.12). However, no similar association was observed with cumulative duration or cumulative dose of diuretics. No significant associations between the other four classes of medications and colorectal cancer risk were observed. Conclusion: No compelling evidence of associations between antihypertensive medications and colorectal cancer were observed.
Project description:BackgroundExpenditure on systemic therapy for cancer has been increasing quickly owing to population growth, increased use, both in the number of users and in prescription volume, and rising drug prices. Our objective was to describe trends in expenditure in British Columbia and Saskatchewan's cancer care systems and to elucidate these drivers of growth.MethodsIn this trend analysis, we obtained pharmacy dispensing records from the BC Cancer and Saskatchewan Cancer Agency pharmacies for all anticancer therapies dispensed in 2006-2013. We calculated total annual expenditure directly from the data and conducted a trend analysis of crude and standardized annual expenditure using generalized linear models. We estimated trends in the following components of total expenditure: cancer incidence, number of systemic therapy users per incident case, number of dispensed prescriptions per user and cost per prescription. Analysis was stratified by patient age group, cancer site and route of administration (oral or intravenous/other).ResultsExpenditure on systemic therapies, adjusted for population growth and aging, increased an average of 9.2% (95% confidence interval [CI] 7.2 to 11.2) per year in Saskatchewan and 6.4% (95% CI 5.3 to 7.6) per year in BC. Growth in expenditure on orally administered agents was more than 2 times higher than growth in expenditure on intravenous/other agents. Growth rates varied significantly by cancer site. In both provinces, rising cost per prescription was the largest contributor to overall growth.InterpretationPrice is the primary driver of growth in systemic therapy expenditure in both BC and Saskatchewan. Understanding the mechanisms of expenditure growth may inform system planning and support policy-makers' efforts to manage rising costs.
Project description:Pavilion Lake is a slightly alkaline, freshwater lake located in British Columbia, Canada (50°51'N, 121°44'W). It is known for unusual organosedimentary structures, called microbialites that are found along the lake basin. These deposits are complex associations of fossilized microbial communities and detrital- or chemical-sedimentary rocks. During the summer, a sediment sample was collected from near the lake's shore, approximately 25-50 cm below the water surface. Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) were isolated from this sample using a simple magnetic enrichment protocol. The MTB isolated from Pavilion Lake belonged to the Alphaproteobacteria class as determined by nucleotide sequences of 16S rRNA genes. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the bacteria were spirillum-shaped and contained a single chain of cuboctahedral-shaped magnetite (Fe3O4) crystals that were approximately 40 nm in diameter. This discovery of MTB in Pavilion Lake offers an opportunity to better understand the diversity of MTB habitats, the geobiological function of MTB in unique freshwater ecosystems, and search for magnetofossils contained within the lake's microbialites.
Project description:BackgroundRegistered midwives in British Columbia (BC) are primary health care practitioners for healthy people throughout pregnancy and for approximately 6 weeks postpartum. BC registered midwives are authorized to prescribe and administer certain vaccines to adults under their care during the perinatal period and hepatitis B vaccine to high-risk newborns. However, little has been documented about their recommendations for, and administration of, prenatal and infant vaccinations. This study surveyed midwives currently practicing in British Columbia to understand their vaccination practices.MethodsAn online survey was administered to the members of the Midwives Association of BC in spring 2018. Outcome measures were the proportion of midwives who discussed, recommended, and administered the following vaccines: influenza, varicella, rubella, and infant hepatitis B. The proportion of midwives who discussed and recommended infant vaccines was measured. Barriers to discussion, recommendation, and administration of vaccines were captured.ResultsSixty-three percent of 108 respondents administered vaccines to their clients. Hepatitis B and rubella were the most frequent vaccines administered. Logistical concerns were the greatest barrier to vaccine administration. This was followed by the perception that vaccine administration is not within the scope of practice of midwives, especially for influenza vaccine. Midwives who administered vaccines were significantly more likely to discuss and recommend vaccines to their clients and their infants.ConclusionsThe majority of BC midwives discuss, recommend, and administer vaccines to their clients. Our survey highlighted key areas to address to strengthen midwifery capacity to discuss, recommend, and provide prenatal and infant vaccines.
